UPDATED: Game Show Network has acquired the exclusive off-network rights to ABC’s hit reality series Dancing With The Stars from Disney-ABC Domestic Television. GSN has picked up seasons 4 through the current 13, which wraps tonight on ABC, and will begin airing them in January 2012. (For those who wonder why the first 3 seasons of the show are not part of the agreement, they were not available over rights issues.) The deal, one of the first major moves for GSN’s newly appointed EVP programming Amy Introcaso-Davis, also includes the upcoming 14th season. “Many of the most popular shows on television today—including Dancing With The Stars—are essentially game shows at their core,” said Introcaso-Davis, who started at GSN 3.5 weeks ago. “GSN is all about the potent combination of games, competition, entertainment and fun, and we know that Dancing With The Stars is a show our female audience already loves.” This is the second off-network acquisition for GSN in the past month following the pickup of the entire Fox run of Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader? That doesn’t signal a trend as GSN’s slate will continue to be a combination of originals and acquired series, according to Introcaso-Davis. Part of her mandate is “defining what the word game is,” she said, “looking at (any) shows that have gaming elements, elements of risk and reward.”

Why not pick up the first 3 seasons? I don’t get it..
Boing!..if you read the entire post you would have seen the line that said “first 3 seasons were not available due to rights issues..”
Got it?
The article was probably updated with details about the first three series of “Dancing With the Stars” and the first comment was posted before those details were posted.
They should have just as much success with this as their reruns of “The Amazing Race” and NBC’s mid-2000′s game shows.
As in nobody watched and they quickly got pushed to late night to finish their runs in shame. And DWTS? It’s going to be even worse with two hour episodes. This is one show where syndication will not work at all; just look at “Biggest Loser”, another two hour bloat show that failed hard on Style.
Not much of a game show. Don’t see the appeal if watching has been and wannabe celebrities dance poorly especially in repeats.
Geez! I hope they don’t give away who wins…
I get the broadened definition of ‘game’ as in contest with stakes, etc but I don’t get re-purposing this.. anyone who cared about this show to begin with watched it in first run & the countdown to the winner is lost in translation. But hey, maybe the DWTS fans will want to watch it again! weird.
Is there any point to re-watching this show? Everyone knows who won. I don’t care for DWTS, and I don’t see any interest in watching it period. This really isn’t a game show at all.
Longtime fans of DWTS have been aching to get ABC to put out a set of dvds of the complete shows for each season – requesting on message boards, emails, etc. So what does ABC do instead? Puts it on premium cable. Bummer! Talking with fellow fans, nobody gets GSN channel on their cable. Most have never even heard of GSN (I had to google it). For the interest of previous posters, yes, we know who won each season. It’s not about the contest. It’s not about celebs who many have never heard of until they appeared on the show. It’s about some pretty awesome dancing, especially by the pros who, one could argue, are the true stars of DWTS.
Does this mean the do-nothing idiots David and Kelly are gone from GSN?
