Here is more fodder for the UK parliamentary committee that is scheduled to hear testimony from News Corp deputy COO James Murdoch on Thursday: It looks like the conglomerate’s now-defunct News of the World hired an investigator to tail a pair of lawyers that were representing victims of the UK tabloid’s phone-hacking scandal. The BBC reported that the surveillance of Mark Lewis and Charlotte Harris took place during the 18 months that James was executive chairman of News International, the UK newspaper arm of News Corp and the parent company of NOTW. The practice included having Derek Webb, a former police officer who ran a private-eye agency, follow and film Lewis’ family — including his teenage daughter — in an effort to dig up dirt on the lawyer and stop him from taking more cases as the scandal grew (Lewis represented the family of Milly Dowler, the murdered schoolgirl whose voicemails were hacked into by NOTW, a revelation that most directly led to the tabloid’s demise). Said News International in a statement: “While surveillance is not illegal, it was clearly deeply inappropriate in these circumstances. This action was not condoned by any current executive at the company.” The BBC said Webb is speaking out about the practice because News International has not paid him for his services; he had been working for the tabloid for eight years.

Just when you think they can’t sink any lower. And they didn’t even bother to pay the guy they’d hired to do their dirty work. Talk yourself out of this one James. How long until Chase Carey takes over?
Considering the number of voting shares the Murdoch family controls in News Corp it would take action by Rupie himself for anything to happen. While it’s not unheard of for Rupie to abandon his children if they don’t perform to expectations, he’s running out of heirs apparent.
According to Nick Davies’ reporting, “Evidence suggests it was part of an attempt to gather evidence for false smears about their private lives.”
This is what the highly-paid thug Pellicano and his wealthy employers did, too.
It’s all part of destroying people by any means necessary.
They did it to Gary Shandling, Bo Zenga, Sylvester Stallone, Donna Dubrow, Lisa Kerkorian and others, including myself. They also tried it on District Attorney Karla Kerlin.
Everyone in town knows who they are, yet everyone turns a blind eye to it.
Like Dylan wrote: “How many times can a man turn his head and pretend he just doesn’t see?”
Where’s the investigation into Fox News? Are we really supposed to believe that News Corpse’s illegal hacking activities were confined to the U.K.?
So Webb doesn’t come forward because of any moral enlightenment but because he wasn’t paid? So not shocking. The rats continue to turn on each other. And as always, great to hear from Anita, although she’s right and it scares the shit out of me.
“Evil” gets tossed around as word way too often, but in this case….
Here’s the small print: “…This action was not condoned by any current executive at the company.” So which past executive did? Rebekah Brooks, perhaps? Note also the use of the word “condoned”, from which can be inferred that someone or some people at executive level certainly had knowledge, maybe even gave the order, but without actually condoning, i.e. liking what was going on. And which company is this? The now defunct NOTW, News International or News Corp itself?
