Embattled Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain will make his first appearance on CBS’ Late Show With David Letterman next Friday. Cain, a syndicated columnist, former radio talk show host and president and CEO of the Godfather’s Pizza chain, emerged as the unlikely frontrunner in the Republican presidential race. But over the past week, he has been hit with accusations of past sexual harassment. Cain will be able to commiserate with Letterman who 2 years ago admitted to having sexual relationships with female employes as a fallout of the foiled extortion attempt against him. Like all late-night comedians, Letterman has been closely following Cain’s campaign and recently parodied the candidate’s ad featuring his chief of staff, Mark Block, smoking a cigarette. Conan did it better.
I WILL NOT BE WATCHING. COULD ONLY TAKE A FEW MINUETS OF HIM ON JIMMY K.CAIN MAKES MY SKIN CRAWL.
Rico,
Why are you screaming? Cain was brilliant on Kimmel.
Don’t do it, Herman. Dave is a leftist whackjob and will ambush you.
Best to stay away.
Bill Clinton was not hurt by these types of allegations when he was running for the Democratic nom (which had way more evidence) so why should they hurt Cain?
Give me an answer please, I’m waiting.
Yeah, and no one believed the allegations against Arnold Schwarzenegger either and look how that turned out (to be true)…Sad that in our society one man’s word (denial) is more revered than the words of many women (who all tell similar stories). Where there’s smoke there’s fire. And Cain’s fire is coming from, what is the count now?…six or seven women???
I am betting that any of the women who have wavered in their support will return and GROW in numbers as the accusers continue to shrink and slither away under the bright glare of examination.
Here’s the deal – from a woman’s point of view – yes, sexual harassment is real and our husbands and brothers and fathers would be upset if they knew how often we actually encounter it and just handle it, like big girls. Like professionals in the workplace. So, yes, we know it’s out there and we can sympathize with other women that endure it. BUT, we ALSO know women like Bailek in the workplace!
They are everywhere too, trying to unfairly get ahead of the rest of us by overtly using their sexuality, or those that manipulate male senior management in other ways involving sexuality (as an implied blackmail for promotions or to obfuscate their poor performance.)
We women KNOW women like this – AND WE DO NOT LIKE THEM!
My gut feeling about Mr. Cain (and I have pretty spot on antenna), Mr. Cain is the kind of senior I would be glad to have because my performance would be fairly evaluated and success would follow. No games, no office politics would get in my way.
As the dust settles, women will see this for what it is. It’s not foreign to us. Trust that.
Simple….Because two wrongs don’t make it right. I sincerely hope we do not elect a man who is in any way misogynist in his world views. And maybe the time has come for many men to finally learn that sexual harassment is wrong on many levels (legal being just one). And if he has so little self control, why would we want him negotiating foreign policy?
Making passes at women in your office and putting your hand on a stranger’s thigh does not rise to ‘misogyny’.
You be-little the word when you use it for this.
Cain has no chance of being president with or without these sexual allegations, so in a way you’re right. Prediction markets had him pegged at 6% chance to be president *before* this story even surfaced. The only reason he’s covered by the media is he’s a larger-than-life personality, political theater is all it is. He’s not electable. The GOP elite don’t care for him, republican leaning independents favor Romney (who will be the GOP nominee), and you can’t get the nomination without those folks.
I’m not sure how to quantify “way more evidence,” but Clinton was able to sidestep some of the controversy with the fact that he’s a skilled politician. I’m in no way defending any of Clinton’s personal and professional mis-steps, but the dude is a good statesman who would probably be elected to a third time right now if it were legal.
Cain, on the other, is a horrible politician. He doesn’t have infrastructure set up in key primary states, he has mishandled this harassment situation every step of the way, he comes off like an insecure jackass when dealing with the media, he is embarrassingly uninformed on foreign policy and doesn’t seem to understand the economy either (as evidenced by his “debate” with Gingrich the other day, as well as his ludicrous 9-9-9 brainfart).
Is Cain getting a raw deal in the media? Maybe. But it also seems like one of those “where there’s smoke” situations, so it’s hard to come down one way or the other until it all plays out.
More evidence?
The only evidence that matters here is that Cain has changed his story about the settlement at least three times since it first came up. He’s said there were never any settlements, then there might have been, then he’d never heard what the allegation was, then oh, yes, he knew the details.
The accusers stayed quiet because of the terms of their settlement agreement, but the theory is that Cain voided that agreement when he started talking about it, which is how two of them (so far) have justified identifying themselves.
And if Letterman, who has showcased more veterans and Medal of Honor winners than any talk-show host ever, is really a “lefty”, then he’d be thrilled to have Cain be the nominee. A guy this clueless about the realities of campaigning (Dear Herman: Google “opposition research”) may be Obama’s best chance at re-election.
Repub voters say they care about ‘family values’ so it matters to them.
Only the Repubs will decide if Cain is their nominee so dont blame anyone else if this sinks him.
Easy. Clinton was a Democrat. They’re allowed.
Just an open question seeking comments: where is Mrs. Cain in all of this? I can accept and even admire if a candidate wants to minimize exposure by his mate to the viciousness of the political media, but wouldn’t a storm like this warrant at least a terse, one-sentence statement of support press release from his wife?
She appeared with him publicly yesterday. Most of the news broadcasts – or at least those that wanted to – carried it.
The media has not gotten into this as deep and as intensely as they did with Jennifer Flowers/Paula Jones. You cant even compare it.
Dave is often the only interviewer who will ignore the interviewee’s demands to not ask questions on specific topics.
Let’s see if Cain is still going to be on the show next week.
I really doubt if he’s ready for this.
As a proud liberal I am laughing my ass off at Cain. I can only imagine what it must be like for racist Republicans to have to embrace this clown as their candidate.
David was a complete a## to Herman cain. it made my skin crawl.I will never watch Letterman again.
