Last week saw the unveiling of the trailer for James Cameron’s Titanic 3D which opens April 6. On Monday Disney released the new trailer for Beauty and the Beast 3D, the first of a handful of Disney/Pixar classics to be retrofitted for 3D. Alas, the trailer here is only 2D, and wearing special glasses won’t help. Beauty and the Beast 3D opens January 13.

They should have stuck with the trailers they allready had made back when the 3D release was originally scheduled for valentines weekend 2010,before it was shelved by Rich Ross and then just scheduled for a 3D BD release this year. the sad thing about them releasing this in January now, is that the 3D bluray will have been in homes for 3 months allready.
what they should have done when they saw the amount of money the el cap screenings were bringing in was push back the 3D Bluray release to first week of December and did a 2 week theatrical re release in November (its 20th anniversary)
This seems reminiscent of the colorization fad more than 20 years ago. You know, take old classic black & white films and use technology to make them full color. It didn’t work very well then and the fad eventually faded away (hopefully never to return).
Now, studios are mining old titles that were originally shot (or animated) in 2D and are trying to 3D-ize them as an obvious cash grab. The technology that does this remains unconvincing for now, so the end products aren’t that compelling – look at any of the non-3D titles that were 3D-ized in the last 1 to 2 years.
Maybe 3D will evolve – it needs to in order to overcome consumer resistance, namely paying extra for those “lovely” 3D glasses, as well as skepticism about re-viewing a film just for a technological gimmick. To be sure, there are fans of various films that will always pay for the new “collector’s DVD” or go see the “limited release”.
If studios insist on foisting 3D on the viewing public, then it would be a better use of their collective resources to develop a better 3D format (glasses-less) that truly gives us a reason to go to the theater. People who remember going to see “The Wizard of Oz” talked about how the audience was amazed when the film transitioned from black & white to color. 3D needs to engender that same gut reaction, otherwise it is merely a gimmick.
And by the way, keep your 3D hands off classic films.
Really poor trailer. Choppy and low rent. Makes it seem like a bad straight to DVD title.
One of my favourites. Disney can my $$$$ & i don’t care.
Because its Disney and they are idiots. The fact that their spending close to $300 million with marketing on a western (Lone Ranger) even though Cowboys and Aliens bombed this very year proves they don’t know what the Hell they are doing.
This is the future of the theatrical movie business for at least the next few years. 20 release slots a year filled with re-releases.
Why do I bother writing new material?
I will 100% be watching this in the cinema. I will 100% not be watching it in 3D. Why bother? It was a great film in 2D why mess with that. I watched the Lion King re-release in 2D. Great to see it back on the big screen. That’s all i want, big screen re-releases every so often like Disney used to do when i was a kid in the 70s/80s.
I was very pessimistic about the Lion King in 3D, and was amazed by the results. One of the best 3D experiences I’ve had, and I’m not usually a big fan of 3D. It looks phenomenal on BluRay 3D.
Now, the really interesting thing here is that the movie is already available on blu ray for sale. If it does really well in cinemas, this might be a very interesting learning that cinema really is about the experience more than it is about the exclusivity. And this is something the industry needs to get data and empirical examples on.
This is a beautiful film – one of my favourite animated movies. Looking forward to seeing it on the big screen again but I’ll pass on the 3-D version. 3-D did nothing for Puss In Boots except empty an additional $4 from my wallet.
Warner’s has to release a 3D of ‘The Exorcist’. Money in the bank and one film that already crossed so many boundaries – so why not take it that next step? I’m not against taking older films and giving them a new spin. (as long as the 3D isn’t rushed and makes a mess of the whole work – and the work supports it. No one needs a 3D of ‘Sophie’s Choice’.) We no longer live in a world where a film is reissued on its own merits and some films – like ‘The Exorcist’ would be cool to watch in this format.
