Wait – this is a joke right?
This really does look like a TV show. That Scarface line has been a dated joke in about 200 other family movies.
This would make a decent TV show. It might even win its night!
It’s a big PG joke and should get a big family audience.
Agreed. Should be a hit with the family auds.
The joke is on Relativity. After watching the trailer they immediately called the SyFy Channel to see if they would buy it because they knew they have a HUGE bomb on their hands. After people got screwed paying for IMMORTALS, no one will ever watch a Tarsem film again, especially when it looks this completely GOD AWFUL.
Poor Julia.
I laughed, or did I upchuck a litle vomit, when the Winkelvii dousche said Snow White was the most beautiful woman in the whole world … yeah, that line doesn’t quite work with Lily Collins and her unibrow.
You know a fantasy film is bad when they have to quote SCARFACE … what is this, the SHREK of fairy tale films? Who wrote this garbage? A first time writer and a writer of MACHINE GUN PREACHER. Oh yeah, this is going to do well. Who the heck greenlighted this?
The movie that will finally put down Relativity.
Could not agree more with Tar-bomb’s post. And I HATE Julia in this role – absolutely awful – it’s like the character goes against her innermost core. Bad accent, not evil enough, not interesting at all. Stick to rom-com’s Julia!! If that’s the highlight then I don’t want to know what the full picture is. Nice costume design – that’s about it. Superficially gorgeous but no substance, like Tarsem’s other films.
Shrek was a fairytale
And Tarsem directs with such stunning visuals, that’s his draw. I’d see it just to see how he puts the story on the screen (visually, anyway. I’m less enthusiastic story-wise but hopeful all the same)
Wow.. That was all kinds of screwed up.. SNO-WAY!!
…
I thought you were joking when I read this, but a dwarf does in fact say “Sno-way”
Sno-my-god!
Sno-shit! I thought the same thing!
It looks like that show on ABC but with Julia Roberts oddly popping up in it.
Oddly popping up as her faux accent pops in and out… as she does bad imitation of Helena Bonham Carter’s Queen of Hearts.
Omg… Is this a movie or television? Looks and sounds like tv. Really bad tv. /wrists
Oh come on. This trailer isn’t half as bad as that Kristen Stewart non-sense. I mean, it is a KIDS movie, stated by Tarsem. It’s bound to have those corny one liners, right?
the rupert sanders version is one of the best trailers this year!
I can confidently say that you are in a very, very small minority with that viewpoint.
this looks more like a play taped than a movie
OH MY! This looks terrible. As much as I love JR, she seems to be miscast.
Uhmmm ok. So I hope this one is directed to children…. but then why cast Julia?
That was terrible. I hope they explain why Julia had a British accent for half the trailer.
Universal’s version looked fantastic.
Stop thinking you are a filmmaker Ryan.
Brett Ratner and Ryan C as producers – what crap they bring.
This will tank.
British accent = evil. Everyone knows this.
Um…definitely SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN. Seems to have more of an edge, take more risks. This feels more like a holiday Hallmark family movie.
NO SHIT! You can’t compare the two. One is LOTR / Alice in Wonderland style film and the other a family friendly movie.
Totally different tact from “Snow White and the Huntsman.” It’s sort of a Disney animated film come to life (“Enchanted”, anyone?) with a small budget. But it does have Julia Roberts acting even more drolly than Nathan Lane, if that’s possible.
It’s a tossup for me.
Yeah, toss up my cookies…
Tarsem Singh directed this? It looks like it could’ve been directed by pretty much anyone.
LOL at the bollywood beginning.
This looks like a kitschy kid version, whereas “Snow White and the Huntsman” looks delicious and dark-which I prefer.
How embarassing this is going to be…
SNO-t very good.
this feels like it has the same tone as The Princess Diaries…I’m sure teenage girls will be interested.
Huntsman – Darker tone all the way!!
why do the sets look like a cheap disneyland ride?
Oy Vey!!
They both look like cheese; both appear to be products of a nearly bankrupt town with nothing left but to re-hash TV shows, old franchises, teen toy commercials, and whatever other unoriginal 3D content the zombies with their names on the doors decide the cattle will consume.
Can’t believe this is Tarsem Singh directing this. Looks like a total trainwreck. And no, that’s no a reference to “The Fall”
(mouth hangs open)
(eyes blink in disbelief)
Is this a joke? Someone actually greenlit this……this……what is it now?
Is it a SNL skit that went on way too long? And just as unfunny?
Is it a bad Mel Brooks homage? Did Garry Marshall drop by and do some reshoots?
(mouth still hanging open)
(eyes still blinking in disbelief)
totally agree….I’m shocked at how amateur this looks…a really bad SNL skit that went on way too long!
Well put! A typically baaaad SNL skit painfully dragged out. Oy.
OT: Now tell me are we the ONLY ones on this planet who hate SNL? Cannot believe how my twitter feed blows up each Saturday night over how “funny” SNL is. Boggles the mind. The show is pure crap.
OMG. This looks AWFUL
does it look stupid? sure. but this will destroy the other snow white at the box. it will be a far, FAR worse movie but that won’t matter.
in this case, the first mover advantage simply can’t be overcome. the average american family’s finances are in disarray and as we all know an outing to the movies is a real expense these days. the majority of them simply won’t spring for a another-but-different snow white right after they have seen this one (and the one on TV right now). of course this raises the question as to whether they would see this one at all — i think so. this doesn’t have to appeal to critics or snobby film people in LA or NY. it’s got what middle america needs – name recognition, recognizable actor, midgets, some laughs. and it has a great release date for what it is (that Alice in Wonderland slot in March).
hollywood may have just out-thunk itself with a “lord of the rings” snow white – just because it looks like LOTR doesn’t mean boys will see it. it’s still called “snow white.” if it doesn’t work, this will be a devastatingly expensive mistake for universal, which could have cut bait when Relativity greenlit Mirror Mirror, but couldn’t get over how disgustingly much they had overpaid for the spec (and the ensuing pressure from joe roth and rupert sanders camp at CAA). fortunately for Donna, nothing short of having employed and enabled jerry sandusky could get her fired.
They are aiming for two different audiences.
dick cheney was aiming at a turkey. what’s your argument that it will work?
My point is that is really doesn’t matter which film goes first. They are so different and this version is geared toward kids while the other one is geared toward teenagers and adults. The audiences who see this movie aren’t the same ones who will go see SWATH.
Funniest comment of the month!!!!!
Wanna bet?
Great analysis, though I think both films will do well, with both of their respective audiences showing up.
You’ve made a lot of great points, treatise, and I agree with all of them. ‘Mirror, Mirror’ does look silly, but when you’re trying to entertain the kids over spring break, do you really care if you have to sit through a movie you don’t like as long as they’re entertained? I know I don’t.
Universal’s insistence to pursue ‘Snow White’ when they knew there was a competing project at Relativity was pure arrogance. Given how greatly the ‘Snow White’ script seems to deviate from the original story, they could have done re-writes to center the story around another fairy tale princess. It’s not like Snow White is the only game in town when it comes to that type of schtick.
I also agree with your assessment about them not getting guys into the theater no matter how many LOTR comparisons they make. Fans didn’t flock to LOTR because of “the look”…..they went because it was based on a book series that has an over-the-top fanbase.
“…the first mover advantage simply can’t be overcome…”
SKYLINE – $21M
BATTLE: L.A. – $86M
Both were alien invasion movies. SKYLINE opened first and was so awful my eyes bled.
Sing it. Never underestimate the fly-over states.
“Snow White and the Huntsman” is by far my choice. Didn’t think I’d be this interested to see a film about Snow White until I saw its teaser trailer.
ummm. Well, some of the Julia parts look funny, at least at the beginning. But everything else looks horrible HORRIBLE HORRIBLE. And by the end, even Julia has worn out her welcome and comes off poorly.
Another great parody from Funny Or Die…
Oh, wait… this was serious?
Acting = FAIL
Accents = FAIL
Dialogue = FAIL
Story = FAIL
Costumes = FAIL
Setting = FAIL
Use of Little People = WIN
Julia Roberts = WTF were you thinking?
I agree about the little people. Cut a new trailer featuring them, and get rid of everything else, which sure seems to suck.
