Wow. If this is any indication of what the movie is like, I think I’ll pass
Um, what?
This movie, “Young Adult” feels utterly underwhelming, especially coming from the pen of an Oscar winning talent. Wow.
this looks terrible. how can they seriously put this movie up “for your consideration”? JUST because the people involved have been in the awards spectrum before doesn’t mean that everything they do should be. what if Reitman shot a porno… should I consider that too?
Wow. And I thought the trailer Disney’s Magic Mud Boy movie was bad.
I know everyone’s going to hate on this movie.
But I love stories about people who are a mess — and it looks like this movie has that in spades.
I can’t wait for it.
I feel the same way.
I agree with both of you… but then I saw it. Truly disappointing. The characters, specially the lead played by Charlize, don’t change, don’t learn anything, and its just a bummer.
Gut feeling, Paramount is giving audience fair warning as to the tone of the pic and just how narcissistic and unlikeable the protagonist is. Smart play as there’s nothing worst for world of mouth playability if you see a flick and it’s not what you were expecting ie were marketed. Even if said picture has merit it can backfire. Viewers are going to be shocked by this character and if people aren’t aware it could cause damage. That said how many average joe’s will see this red band. The first trailer gives you a good feel for the tone but nothing as blunt as this. Time will tell I suppose.
I totally agree with your assessment of this trailer. The character Charlize plays is dark, broken and not very nice. So yes they need the audience to know this. Reminded me a bit of Bad Santa.. The scene was not suppose to be funny. Just show how damaged this woman is. How out of place.
I don’t know if I’m going to see it or wait for dvd..but it doesn’t look bad. And I love Patton Oswalt.. who should be working so much more.
I read comments here every week about why they aren’t making different kinds of movies. Well here you are, and people are still complaining.
I agree with you as well… and go on about it for too long in a post below!
This looks incredible. It reminds me of earlier Alexander Payne movies where the protagonists are highly unsympathetic.
To compare Jason to Alexander is like comparing a film student to well, Alexander.
Agree!
Liked the script, but the movie looks painfully awkward. Especially this scene.
It is – in an great way!
Just what exactly is this trailer supposed to show anyway? It looks more like an angry Black Friday shopper (Theron), which we see too much of on the news.
A trailer should make you want to go see the film. This, I just don’t know.
Is this comedy? Cause it isn’t funny.
At this point, I’ll see just about anything that’s not superheroes, vampires, or kiddie board games.
Um, ok.
Now that’s BRAVE. And I don’t get anyone who doesn’t think it’s funny… and sad…. and INTERESTING. Makes me want to see it to get more, that’s for sure!
Someone gave YOU a good watering this morning, THAT’S for sure.
I can count at least 3-4 plants in these early comments..this red band tid-bit is crap…’nuff said
Since I was one of the early positive commenters, I’m going to assume you’re rounding me up in your comments.
I can only say, “Nope.” Trust me, I got no one in Hollywood paying me to say nice things. I’m just a man working his ass of to get good work done.
For context: Some of my favorite movies this year were TREE OF LIFE, TAKE SHELTER, MONEYBALL and WARRIOR. So, my tastes might not be yours.
I can’t speak for whether the other commenters are plants or not, but I think j79 hits it on the head:
The marketing department is being smart by being upfront about what I expect will be the tone and feel of the movie. I’m sure they could have culled a trailer of happy/funny moments — that surely would have sent audience member into the theater with certain expectations and had them leaving disappointed with what was actually delivered.
Look, for example, at the crappy ad campaigns built for both MONEYBALL and WARRIOR. Both of them lazily depicted rah-rah shots of sporting events, making each about the sport itself, and neither touched on the terrific emotional content or the amazing performances. I saw both those movies almost by accident after the trailers told me there was nothing more than a BAD NEWS BEARS for adults in one, and a movie about relentless pummeling in the other.
But both movies were much, much more interesting than the ads delivered.
I don’t think YOUNG ADULT will be for everyone. But I think it will be a terrific piece of work with a strong point of view. (That’s my hope at least!)
It won’t be like every other movie. It will be it’s own thing. Which is a risk. And harsh and observant about people and life. I don’t need to see that kind of movie all the time.
Give me a terrific piece of work like the original IRONMAN and I’m there in a heartbeat. Because that, too, was specific and strong and clear in what it was doing. I’ll show up for YOUNG ADULT for almost the exact same reasons. Because it looks like it knows what it wants to be doing — and is doing it.
I’ve seen it and it’s a decent movie, certainly a step up from the awful Juno. But Cody and Reitman aren’t on solid ground here, they’re trying very hard to make a dark character study but don’t really have the weight or the profundity to pull it off. It’s an interesting and brave film but just not a particularly good one.
This movie is really out of the conversation as far as awards go, right? I don’t know anybody who has seen it yet.
I saw it at a guild screening two weeks ago. It’s out of the conversation because no one likes it. It’s an extremely awkward, icky, unsettling film going experience.
That said, Charlize has a chance to get nominated — it’s a fearless performance — if anyone can possibly separate her from the movie she’s in.
I liked it and want to see it. I thought the premise is kind of amazing. What if a 2011 Scarlett O’hara wanted your husband? I’m not a plant but I admit I like window sills.
The drummer girl in the beginning was really creepy.
And I feel like Katherine Heigl would be a better choice for Theron’s role, just based on the full length trailer. I’m not sure Theron can capture that angst and desperation reflected in the script.
It’s actually a pretty darn good movie, which surprised me cause I hated JUNO.
Diablo Cody has the gift of capturing the little moments in life most of us simply pass by without noticing.
“I love your sweater…”
Imo, that’s a brilliant line because it perfectly encapsulates Theron’s character’s self-hatred. Did you catch the look in Theron’s eyes when she says “joke”? Pure venom.
And Paramount is putting this up “for your consideration” because it believes, rightly so, that Theron may snag a nomination for her performance.
Haha, studio plant.
As Calculon said, “I’m not familiar with the type of thing I’m seeing.”
I can’t wait for this.
THIS is a red band trailer?? I mean is this as provocative as you can get? Oh you Americans and your sense of scandal!
And lordie what a godawful and puerile scene! Further proof to me that Jason and Cody are really overrated.
Could not agree more.
Seriously.
horrible.
I’m looking forward to this – Bad Teacher hinted at being bad ass but never delivered in the end. It was very uneven and patchy, and even had the hoaky happy ending tacked on.
This Young Adult thing looks like it might just swing for the fences…..or whatever that old guy saying is………
For those of you who were expecting explosions, gunfire, fx, or maybe a nice glimpse of Charlize’s derriere, I can understand your disappointment. For those of you who expect a trailer to tell you the entire plot in 30 seconds, I can understand your disappointment as well. If you were expecting a scene in which a seriously broken individual is having a particularly bad social moment, well, there you go.
