Looks good. Just wish GERALD MCRANEY had a larger role.
Ummm, you do know this is a movie about The Tuskegee Airmen, don’t you?
Cuba Gooding Jr, George Lucas, an unknown first-time director, terrible special effects, and it opens in January. Really now… Looks like a trainwreck.
TEEERRRIBLE special effects??? Really? Come now. I mean REALLY. Kris TM – while I wish they went all A.D. Flowers and L.B. Abbott with the ‘Tora, Tora, Tora’ model shop on our asses — they did do a pretty fucking great job with these shots. It’s easy to say terrible but this looks great to me and I’ve won some hot tchotchkes for f/x baby.
And what have YOU done lately… How would you like someone judging yourwith your latest project… Oh yeah, you have none.
The fact that this film was re-shot extensively is a bad sign.
ahhhh snap!
An uninformed opinion, a guy talking trash on the internet, and criticizing what is good-looking work.
THAT’S a trainwreck.
Agreed Looks really good
Don’t jump to conclusions just yet KrisTM. It opens the week of MLK day and two weeks before black history month, so it’s bound to get a good turnout from minorities. Plus you can’t discount the fact that this is George Lucas’ first film since Star Wars so lots the Star Wars/action geeks will definitely show up for this.
My guess is that this does pretty big numbers at least the first 2-3 weeks.
Chills, pride, excitement…I feel it everytime I see this trailer. You don’t have to like it, this story needed to be told in a feature format with production value and respect. It looks great and I can’t wait.
What trailer did YOU watch? It’s true that Cuba Gooding Jr. and George Lucas are not names that have been synomymous with quality lately, but why judge them by their past projects? THIS one looks damn good! And, speaking of train wrecks, that’s a hell of a train wreck in the trailer. I don’t see anything wrong with those effects.
Toniiiggght
Give me everything toniight
For all we know
We might not get tomorrow
Let’s do it toniight
Wow, looks infinitely superior to the first trailer, I’m surprised…
Still Lucas is at the helm though, so my expectations are luke-warm, at best.
Lucas produced it, he didn’t direct it. However the thing looks fantastic. I will definitely see this one.
Looks absolutely amazing… bout time Lucas does some of his nonstarwars projects and darn… wow…
We’ve seen the TUSKEGEE AIRMEN story may times, in many forms (most memorably the TNT movie with Andre Braugher.) How about the untold story of the Women Air Service Pilots in World War Two?Just as ground-breaking and heroic, but completely off the radar, a historical black hole. That’s a story that deserves to be told.
I agree with your point about the WASPS (though you neglected to mention the WACS or the Nesei “Purple Heart” Battalion of WW2) however you are simply wrong about the Tuskegee airmen’s story being told “many times.”
All they’ve ever gotten in one cheaply-made movie on HBO. That’s it. I don’t know why it’s okay to shove a miniseries about the 101st airborne down our throats but one decently-made movie about the Tuskegee airmen makes people lose their minds.
It sounds more like a soft-pedaled means of trying to try to sell the idea that the Tuskege pilots are “overrated” or “undeserving” of a movie.
Either way you’re wrong.
George Lucas producing + no awards season push + January release = DUD / DOA
This looks way too melodramatic, especially all the scenes with Terrence Howard and Bryan Cranston. I love how in a film about African American pilots, the first three actors listed on imbd are white, one of them Daniela Ruah who I never heard of, all above the well-known more popular black actors. Also, that poster on imdb looks terrible – did someone just photoshop that? Seriously, George Lucas and ILM or whoever couldn’t come up with a better poster than that? Why are they putting such little effort into in important story that could have been so good? Why is Fox basically dumping this film? You would think George Lucas would have a bunch of pull – why isn’t he behind a big awards push? It’s quite embarrassing.
I think I’ll just go try and find the 1995 HBO version called THE TUSKEGEE AIRMEN which also starred Cuba Gooding Jr. (and also stars Laurence Fishburne, Allen Payne, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Courtney B. Vance, Mekhi Phifer, and John Lithgow, with Christopher McDonald). I remember watching it years ago and it was quite good for an HBO budgeted movie.
Lucasfilm *shudder* There was a time when it actually meant quality.
The pilot quips are very videogame-like and unnecessary. And every time the “camera” shakes when aircraft fly by, I’m taken out of the movie.
Thanks.
You could get worse editors than Ben Burtt.
WOW indeed! This is looks good. I’m there.
Egads this looks absolutely awful.
Awful stilted dialog, poorly delivered, and with a feel that is completely ‘off’ as believable from a cultural/linguistic/style standpoint as being of the 40′s. I should know. I was there, and of age to know. Nothing any of these actors (black and white) say in the trailer sound anything like what anyone of the day would’ve said, or how they would’ve said it.
Atrocious writing, atrocious directing. Sad too, as it’s a remarkable story.
Throwing negative comments at the movie won’t hurt it, try as you might.
And given your comments I would say you were born in the 60′s. However were you around in the 40′s I think it’s safe to say whose side you would been on in the integration debate.
Nice try though.
Bad title. Good trailer. Great story. Be interesting to see the film.
Revisionist history garbage.
The Tuskegee Airmen were a media-made experiment. At best mediocre, but mostly scrabble, they were falsely elevated as heroes at the expense of real ones.
The truth will set you free.
Ummm…”Tuskeegee Airmen”??? Been done, and with many of these same actors. But I love it and look forward to seeing it, again.
Hello everybody,
I read Deadline frequently because I’m interested in the film industry but I don’t work in the industry nor do I want to. There is a movie out now with Justin Timberlake and Ne Yo is in this one. Can somebody explain to me how singers get hired to do these movies? To my understanding actors are short on jobs. Do these singers have to beat out others in an audition? If it’s a decision by the financers, is it a smart one?
I have 2 boys, 19 and 21 who had friends over the other night. I overheard their conversation about the Justin Timberlake movie and they all seemed to refuse to watch the movie because Justin Timberlake was the leading star in it.
Very nice. My boyfriend (HUGE about WWII) will love this…
Forget that the script was something John Ridley scabbed out during the strike. The extra five years let them really polish up the Blazing Angels for Wii-quality special effects.
Every time Terrence Howard opens his mouth in this trailer I cringed.
Yikes, it looks like a bad video game. George should have found a more experienced director. When the pilots sit in the cock pit the light stays completely even on their faces, even though they are racing through they sky with light bouncing around all over the place. The keying in the interiors looks awful. He needs to rely less on the computer nerds and more on the DP. I would love to see Mr. Lucas take a stab at film making again. For someone who was such a technical master in the past, these are the mistakes of someone who has ended their love affair with cinema.
Enough with the hate. This looks hot. If you sat through Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor, you can sit through this. At last a black, historical film that’s serious. No shufflin’, hoopin’ & hollerin’, cross-dressing Baptist gospel, chitlin’ circuit BS. Proud black men of the past, fighting for Uncle Sam, not saggin’-ass rappers, thugs and wannabe gangstas. I’m in.
