Here’s the latest of the occasional behind-the-scenes videos that Peter Jackson makes for fans while he has been in New Zealand shooting The Hobbit. In this installment, he discusses the switch from the 2D The Lord of the Rings to a 3D shoot for both installments of The Hobbit. Jackson said that he wished he could have done the trilogy in 3D, but I still believe that Warner Bros will probably sponsor a conversion of the original three films to 3D, so that the five-film adaptation of the JRR Tolkien book series matches up.

Will these films have 2D screenings? I have zero interest in paying to see them in nauseating 3D.
These movies shouldn’t be nauseating in 48fps 3D at 5k resolution, but yes, they will have 2D screenings as Peter Jackson has confirmed.
No, it is unheard of for a 3D film to screen in 2D.
If you watch the video, you will see that they are making huge advances toward getting rid if this problem.
I loves me those Peter Jackson vlogs. It’s great to see a filmmaker who’s actually excited about making movies. I’m not saying other filmmakers aren’t, but Jackson is winningly shameless about it, and knows how to share.
What I would like to know is how many theatres will actually be able to present the films at this high quality? Will projecting at 48fps be as simple as changing a setting? (I’m afraid of another quality control issue, like how many theatres project 2D movies through dual-lensed 3D projectors) What about 5k resolution? I thought most projectors were 2k with an occasional 4k projector in select markets.
looks like peter jackson is starting to put on weight again
Yes…and he’s actually looking healthy again. He did not look healthy when he was at his lightest. Nor did he seem happy he seemed to lose some spunk when he lost all that weight.
I look forward to this 3D presentation. Unfortunately as we all know quality 3D effort like this is an Outlier and the crap will keep flowing
? guess the hobbit will change moviegoers perception towards 3d. This will be the last journey to middle earth so both movies will be a cinematic experience anyway.
The 3D concept art near the end of the video is amazing and incredibly cool. If that’s the level of detail going into the concept art then I can’t wait to see the movie in the theater!
I have complete and utter faith in Peter Jackson. He gave us the Lord of the Rings movies which is one of my all time favorites. He’s bringing all the latest technologies together (5k, 3D, 48fps) and he’ll do it right. Don’t worry, this movie is in good hands. I’m counting the days to opening night.
