Producers of Summit Entertainment’s upcoming release I, Alex Cross, directed by Rob Cohen with Tyler Perry stepping into the role created by Morgan Freeman, have filed suit against other producers who claim they should receive compensation and screen credit for the movie. Bill Block and Paul Hanson are partners in QED, which produced the project that Summit has acquired for distribution. QED claims in the suit that prolonged negotiations that began in 2008 with potential producers Jan Korbelin and Marina Grasic (who with Mark Lindsay have launched Cargo Entertainment) and their company Visitor Pictures failed to come to an agreement on Visitor’s involvement with the development of I, Alex Cross. QED claims it drafted and redrafted multiple memorandums of understanding for Visitor’s involvement that were all rejected and no agreement was reached or signed. In 2009, QED says it formally notified Visitor that all previous offers were withdrawn. QED asserts that development of the movie proceeded without Visitor, who “indeed sought to have no involvement,” according to the suit.
Now that principal photography on I, Alex Cross has finished and the movie is expected to be released next year, QED claims that Visitor has resurfaced and is demanding compensation and screen credit, probably in preparation for legal action of their own. QED and other plaintiffs Suejack Inc and JPB Businesses are seeking a court ruling in the case to remove the “cloud” cast over I, Alex Cross by Visitor’s claims before the movie is released.
As for the movie, in addition to Perry as the detective, Lost‘s Matthew Fox plays a serial killer who murders Cross’ wife as revenge for Cross thwarting an earlier attempted murder. Ed Burns plays Fox’s partner. Kerry Williamson wrote the original script, and Marc Moss and Cohen generated a new draft that takes some different turns than the novel. In addition to QED partners Block and Hanson, producers include Leopoldo Gout and Steve Bowen, who spearhead Patterson’s film endeavors. The movie was packaged by WME.

The sad fact is none of these “producers” actually did shit.
Guys you don’t want to put your name to this movie. It was doomed when Tyler Perry was cast.
Right?! They should have cast TP as Nana Mama and gotten a real actor to play Cross if they felt Morgan Freeman wasn’t right anymore (or if he couldn’t be bothered). Clark Peters from The Wire/Archer would have been a good choice. Or Denzel Washington (but that might have been too weird, Denzel Washington picking up a Morgan Freeman role). Thing is, Cross has to be solidly in his 50s by now, so TP is also too young (unless they’re tossing canon out the window, which they probably are).
With Madea — I mean Tyler Perry in the lead, the title should be changed from
“I, Alex Cross”
to
“I Alex, cross”
You beat me to the punch. Who wants to take credit for not casting Idris Elba? Or for the upcoming disppointing box office?
This is an incomplete story without knowing why QED was negotiating with Visitor. If they controlled the rights to the book, how could QED and its financing partners ever decide to make a movie without a deal. If it was brought to QED by Visitor, they must have had some position in the underlying rights. This story feels crazy. One things for sure, if you’ve got a claim, do like Visitor has dine and wait until the movie is in the can… Don’t start yapping while a script is being written.
What are they fighting over? The movie is going to gross $4.37. Not only did the literary franchise start circling the drain about four installments before I, Alex Cross, but Tyler Perry can’t fill Morgan Freeman’s shoes in the role. And for those who don’t connect this film with Kiss the Girls or Along Came a Spider, no matter — suffice it to say that Tyler Perry can only play one character, and that’s Madea. His fan base isn’t interested in seeing him as anything but a chitlin circuit drag queen gramma, and those who aren’t his fans and have seen him try to do straight acting know he hasn’t got the requisite chops to carry the lead in a thriller/police procedural. Stupid, stupid casting.
You’re right about that, girl.
The Alex Cross book series is $1.4 Billion in worldwide book sales and growing geometrically. It is now biogger than the James Bond book series. You might try to get facts straight before shooting off ill informed blather!
Tyler Perry as Alex Cross?? WTF.
I think I threw up in my mouth a little bit.
I thought they were fighting to get their names taken off it, not on it…
They know Tyler Perry can’t act and this is going to be a stinking pile of shit, right?
Tyler Perry’s profile and traction overseas is around the 0.00 level. And do non-African American audiences want to watch him? I don’t think so.
Not worth the cost to file a lawsuit. The movie blows. It’ll loose money. Production was a big mess andthe fact remains that Summit can’t sell anything that isn’t about teenage vampires.
Jan Korbelin is a complete scumbag. I have been in the feature film game for a very long time and I haven’t seen a track record like his, ever. Everything he touches turns to complete hell.
So you have been in the business for a very long time and you have never seen a track record like Jan Korbelin’s?? The man produced a movie that won the oscar for best picture, that alone is an achievement that few in the industry have ever achieved. Do you have something in your name that is worthwhile “Anonymous”?
I agree. Jan is a good guy indeed.
Visitor had the rights for the picture and they will be compensated in court. Oh no, wait… QED is coming back to the table…
Wow such hostility about Tyler Perry. I’m sure his plays and movies have grossed more than everyone’s salary on this blog times 100. Do your research also!!!! Non african Americans also enjoy his movies—read up on it!!!
