It’s stange that a former corporate cousin of HBO — Time Warner Cable — remains the biggest pay TV company that still doesn’t offer subscribers the opportunity to access the HBO Go digital streaming service. But that will change “soon,” Time Warner Cable COO Robert Marcus tells Bloomberg. Marcus declined to say what’s holding things up — and we’ve been hearing for months that a deal was just around the corner. Still, if Marcus’ prediction is correct, then it means the HBO customers among TWC’s 12.1M subscribers will be able to watch shows such as Boardwalk Empire, Hung, Bored To Death, and Real Time With Bill Maher on demand from Web-connected devices including tablets and mobile phones. It’s important to HBO because TWC serves two of its biggest markets, Manhattan and Los Angeles. TWC and Cablevision are the only major cable, satellite, and telco video providers that still don’t offer HBO Go.

I’ll believe it when I can actually connect to it.
I do wonder why HBO is providing a service which should put a significant dent in their home video sales.
Because home video sales are dead. People who used to buy TV shows on DVD now want it streaming.
Hurry up with this already. I never watch tv at home anymore. Everything gets streamed to my phone with Hulu, netflix, watch espn, mlb.tv and nfl mobile. Now I just need hbo go and I will be set.
But I already don’t want to have cable to get hbo go and watch espn. The next big move will be enabling the consumer to drop their cable carrier entirely and get their programing streamed directly from the content provider.
How long away is that? 5 years? 10?
If companies are smart, it should be in the next 5 years. There is a ton of money to be made in the digital/streaming realm. And as much as it is booming right now, its still underexploited.
There’s also a lot of money to lose if HBO goes “over the top” (at this juncture) and makes the cable companies irrelevant. Cable companies choose to carry the HBO service for their customers. If they feel like HBO isn’t appealing to their needs, business wise, they could easily discontinue HBO service to its customers.
When is TWC going to end their stubborness and add the NFL Network?
The dispute is around premium vs. basic. The NFL requires it’s NFL Network to be available as part of a carriers basic program package, but the greedy heads at TWC want to include it in their premium level sports package only. It’s insane that major market’s such as LA and NY can’t get the NFL Network on TWC.
I canceled my TWC and switched to Comcast just so I could use HBOGO on my iPad and iPhone. Best decision I’ve made in a long time. Get with the program TWC, the future is now.
How is it possible to have a choice of cable providers??
TWC probably can’t figure how to do it. They are the most incompetent cable company I’ve ever dealt with and I’ve used Comcast.
