Less than 2 weeks after receiving Bryan Fuller’s script for The Munsters, NBC has given a pilot order to the Pushing Daisies creator’s reboot of the 1960s comedy. Universal Television is producing the project, described as an imaginative reinvention of The Munsters as a visually spectacular one-hour drama. Fuller originally developed The Munsters last season and his was one of very few scripts new NBC chief Bob Greenblatt kept in play when he took over the network in January. Greenblatt rolled the project to get it redeveloped by his team. Fuller’s new outline submitted in September was received well, and his new script was delivered to NBC early this month. Word is that the network
envisions the new Munsters as a potential summer or event series. Like Fuller’s previous series, Pushing Daisies, the project features striking visuals mixed with all the classic Munsters archetypes. Grandpa Sam Dracula is essentially Dracula who assembled Herman because no man was good enough for his daughter Lily, a sexy vamp. Lily’s niece Marilyn the freak is actually normal and Lily and Herman’s only child, Eddie, has his werewolf tendencies surface in puberty, forcing the family to relocate to their famous 1313 Mockingbird Lane address. In addition to The Munsters, Fuller also has Hannibal, based on the Hannibal Lecter character, in contention at NBC for a straight-to-series order via Gaumont International TV.

awesome. nbc has the brilliant foresight to get what is obviously going to be another top notch remake going, but they let community go to the sidelines.
if they are looking for someone to help run the network, my two year old is available to help out.
Sadly, your two year-old should look for employment elsewhere. He is very likely too intelligent, too creative and has balls too big to be a television exec.
Your two year would probably do a better job and take over by the time he/she is 3. Bunch of idiots.
NBC is going places, let me tell you…
Amen… my dog could do a better job running that network. Laura Lancaster needs to go and they need a new egdy outlook.
Seconded…LL is 100% creatively bankrupt — hence her giving Fuller his what — ninth? chance to put together a show with any kind of mass appeal. He was part of the problem at Heroes and his relentless self-promotion has been mistaken for a resonant voice. Greenblatt has to understand that this will be three times as embarrassing as WONDER WOMAN if they can’t pull it off.
When Bryan Fuller left Heroes is when it creatively dropped drastically. Tim Kring was the problem, not Bryan Fuller. Fuller created Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies. Those two shows were wildly creative. And Heroes episode, “Company Man” was loved by a lot of people.
yes, he created three shows that weren’t hits and were flops. fantastic. very simply put; THE MUNSTERS WILL FAIL. It will lose money. The studio will regret having ordered it. Bank on it.
Dead Like Me and Pushing Daisies. Two of the most over-rated shows in the last bunch of years. UGH. I tried to watch these shows and they put me to sleep.
Where is Darin Morgan from X-Files? He was the creative, unique voice in TV that Brian Fuller can only dream of being. I wish Darin Morgan hadn’t left TV — unlike Fuller, he was the real deal.
Fuller is the real deal, a truly talents man in a nation of hacks, trust-funders and cronies.
I hate reboots but I trust Brian.
Agreed on the fact that Brian Fuller is a creative genius. I honestly don’t get the people who didn’t like Dead Like Me. I have yet to see Pushing Daisies, but I am sure that is of the same caliber judging by the enthusiastic reviews on Netflix. If you like tv that is smart, contains actors that are endearing and represent the full spectrum of human physical form, and that uses special effects that actually enhance the show and aren’t thrown in just to dazzle and stun you; then I think you will find Brian Fuller’s creations to be exquisite.
Though I’m not into the idea of a Munsters remake, Bryan Fuller getting another show on the air is one of the best things that could happen to TV. The man is brilliant. Go watch Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls or Pushing Daisies and tell me otherwise. I’m sure he’ll be able to do something interesting with this new project of his.
P.S. Community’s gotten progressively worse since the third season so unless the next few episodes go through a surge in quality, I won’t be too sad to say goodbye. The multiple realities episode is the only good one in the season so far.
Network – saved!
I love Bryan Fuller, but WTF.
Score one for the bad guys!
Okay… I just have to weigh in. Usually, who has the time, right? But after remakes of remakes and reboots of reboots and turning to board games from the 1920s to save Hollywood…
It must be pretty sad to wake up one morning and realize you’ve become finely, unarguably, creatively bankrupt. The Munsters? Really? Yay! Let’s do that again! Spectacular idea, chief! What are Laverne and Shirley up to these days?
What’s it like to live your days so scared to risk any kind of originality that you have to keep digging deeper and deeper and deeper into the heaps of history. What’s it like to wish that things could be different, but realize you’re hog-tied by a corporation that really doesn’t care about product, only profit?
Really, what’s it like? Can anyone who’s actually involved in these types of green light decisions answer that? Here’s an idea: why not reboot “Jerry Maguire,” only do if for real. And instead of a sports agent standing up to try and do something meaningful, someone who’s actually in a position of power to make a differnce can. I’ll read your manifesto! Great balls o’ fire, I’ll even write it!
good thing Fox did not listen to your smart ideas, or they would not have made Planet Of The Apes, one of the hits of the year.
One exception hardly disproves the rule.
Bryan Fuller is great and very creative. If anyone can even attempt to make this work, it’s him.
Yes, if anyone – ANYONE – anyone in the entire world can even muster the nerve to attempt a remake, it’s this one single person. No one else in the entire world has the ability to ‘reboot’ and ‘reshoot’ like this one amazing person. Thank goodness he isn’t doing something actually original or his unique talents at attempting a remake of a short-lived so-so show, whose one real distinction is a truly great theme song, would be completely wasted.
Who’s programming NBC? ABC?
Whether you’re into the remake or not, one thing is for sure: Bryan Fuller looks just like Elijah Wood.
As much of a silly, goofy, guilty pleasure those old Munsters reruns are, this is quite possibly the stupidest idea anyone has ever had. EVER.
No, that would be a remake of The Warriors with no guns and wirefu.
Honestly. I trust Bryan Fuller has written a great script. But why don’t they just air Being Human? The original British one, or the one currently airing on their sister network Syfy. Being Human is pretty much a take for a drama version of The Munsters.
A Drama ? Seriously ? Does anyone at NBC realize The Munsters was a **Comedy** ? Is Herman Munster going to be killing the citizens of Mockingbird Heights ? This has epic fail written all over it.
Reboot The Munsters as a Comedy, or send this project to the cemetery for a proper burial.
Good point.
Even though this idea is obviously unoriginal, it will connect today’s generation with one of the classic TV shows that pretty much everyone knows about. Learning about television’s history (or learning what kinds of shows people were watching back in the day, to be more specific) is a great way for teens to connect not only to America’s past, but also to their parent’s generation as well.
Also, at least we know it’s going to be a light-hearted cheesy comedy, rather than an hour long show about people digging up old bones and piercing people’s flesh. Not really something I want to see while eating dinner. *gag*
Are you joking, or did you just not read the article? From the article:
Universal Television is producing the project, described as an imaginative reinvention of The Munsters as a visually spectacular one-hour drama.
Just take a look at any of his other work and you will know that there will be a good amount of humor squeezed in even if it is a drama.
Way to go, NBC – because KNIGHT RIDER, PRIME SUSPECT, ROCKFORD FILES and many other reboots/remakes were terrific!!! Look, no one knows what is going to work but THE MUNSTERS as a DRAMA?? This is a trainwreck. I know NBC nor any other net would ever do this because it would prove you really DONT need the suits to make a good show – but NBC has nothing to lose – if it wasnt for their NFL games – their ratings would match basic cable some nights – so NBC – roll the dice and just hire really talented writers and let them make their passion project with little or no interference. What’s the worse that can happen? It fails? Hell, you have that working gangbusters with the old model of business as it is. But you might also develop some unique smash hits. (like MTM did back in the day).
If they’re going to do remakes they ought to do shows that more or less has been forgotten- I saw some old reruns of a 1950s police show years ago called M Squad, starring Lee Marvin- I never even knew Lee Marvin had ever starred in his own TV show.
At the same time I found out Charles Bronson also had an old TV show called Man With A Camera, another 1950s television crime drama.
Why not something like that?
Though they’d probably screw it up with political correctness, or some such political garbage like they always do.
From the network that brought you “Knight Rider” and “Bionic Woman” comes this season’s next cancellation…
I completely forgot about The Bionic Woman remake. UGH that was painful.
and the wonder woman reboot that didn’t make it to air.
Isnt Bryan supposed to be crazy?
Not sure, but NBC certainly is.
In fact, he ISN’T crazy. He’s possibly one of the most genuinely creative and friendly people in the business.
Brian actually broke into the business because of his genius. He wasn’t associated with Hollywood at all until he was inspired to write and send in some scripts regarding Star Trek. He was offered a low position and worked his way up to co-producer. I think the reason that his stuff is so well thought out is the fact that he wasn’t “born into the business” so to speak. He doesn’t try to peddle the same meaningless sex, drugs, and violence that so many careless upstarts who just happen to be well-connected do. (Don’t get me wrong: Sex, drugs, and violence can totally be amazing plot-drivers, but you still have to be creative about using these tools.)
What the hell is wrong with NBC? All of their shows are unwatchable. I’m thoroughly convinced that your average Joe can do a better job running that network. How can people like the NBC execs get so far in the business when they clearly have no idea what they are doing? For instance, I could have told you ‘Prime Suspect’ was going to be cancelled early in the season the first time I saw the previews. So what are the execs at NBC missing? Do they not live in the real world? Can they not sense what obviously wont work? Well, NBC, I’m going to do you a favor. This Munsters ‘reboot,’ wont work. Get out now before you waste money.
The Munsters? Seriously? This show originally ran for only two years. The only reason anyone watched was because there were only three channels. Not funny then, will not be funny now. And Hannibal Lector? Yeah, cannibalism is such a turn-on.
NBC = Nothing But Crap
Bryan Fuller is very talented, Pushing Daises highly underrated..will check this out
NBC really is Nothing But Crap. Well said. Bob Greenblatt and the team he micromanages will not be able to save it. Sadly, it seems beyond repair. They continue to be beat by cable networks on a regular basis. Very very sad.
….and in the NEW ‘Gilligan’s Island,’ Mary Anne and Ginger are going explore their feelings for each other and the Professor will be played by Tom Cavanagh. With Danny Glover as the Skipper. This makes me long for the days of Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie.
So you guys don’t like it and won’t watch it?
It’s brilliant—as long as they keep the Jack Marshall score.
While I’m sure that Fuller’s take on The Munsters will be unique and entertaining [I'm not so sure about Hannibal], it’s sad that he’s been reduced to doing new takes on other people’s creations.
I’ll no doubt have to watch both – if they go to series – for review purposesb – but I can’t say that I’m looking forward to Hannibal at all. The Munsters, though, does have a lot of potential to become twisted fun if Fuller is allowed to let his imagination flow freely.
“The Munsters, though, does have a lot of potential to become twisted fun if Fuller is allowed to let his imagination flow freely.”
I’m going with that. I’m hoping that this might be the way for Fuller to finally get his spectacularly imaginative writing past a network and Nielsen dullards in the stealth guise of a re-make. For all everyone is justifiably complaining about remakes, let’s not forget that with the right team, they can be fantastically original, like the new BSG.
Possibly the most well-said post on this page. Well done.
The idiots at NBC should remake SOYLENT GREEN as a situation comedy, with Lindsay Lohan as Shirl (Leigh Taylor Young’s role) and Charlie Sheen as Thorn (Charlton Heston’s role) …now that would be entertaining!
