2ND UPDATE 8:30 PM: Extra has now revised its website. Here is the full account of how Jeremy Renner replied to the question about “the
rumors his Mission: Impossible character might possibly take over in a 5th installment of the franchise. Renner shot down the rumor, replying: ’I don’t think that’s really ever a possibility. I think the possibility, first and foremost, is for audiences to receive this movie and like it, want to see more. And then it’s Tom’s willingness to want to do another one, to put together another big movie like this. These aren’t easy to put together. So if Paramount and Tom want me to do it, I’d be happy to be a part of it. I’d be up for it… assuming my character doesn’t croak. I’m not going to tell ya!’ “
UPDATE 7:30 PM: Now Paramount is denying the Extra account of its interview with Jeremy Renner. In fact Deadline was just played a portion of the tape by the studio. Renner is asked about the rumors that he would replace Tom Cruise on the Mission: Impossible franchise. And Renner responds: “No, I don’t think that’s ever really a possibility.” Sounds like Extra didn’t present Renner’s full reply and in doing so changed the meaning of what he said. But it’s also clear from the way the studio jumped into the fray that Paramount wants to ensure no bad blood between Renner and Cruise.
PREVIOUS: During an Extra interview promoting Paramount’s Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, Jeremy Renner replied to a question about taking over the franchise lead: ”I’d be up for it, and Tom wants me to do it. I’d be happy to be a part of it. But that’s assuming my character doesn’t croak [in this one]. I’m not going to tell you.” Renner already has taken over a new lead role in Universal’s Bourne franchise.

What could go wrong? It worked for EVAN ALMIGHTY and TEEN WOLF TOO!
Jeremy Renner is a good actor, but is a zero when it comes to box office draw.
We don’t know this yet. Lets see what happens with the Bourne Franchise.
Well, you couldn’t be more wrong on that one. He is a huge box office draw.
So, I take it Renner lives at the end of Ghost Protocol and he’s not the villain? Umm… spoiler warning??
Or rather…they want people to forget that he basically just revealed the film’s well-calculated twist on its own promotional campaign. (Why all this PR touting Renner as a potential ‘replacement’ for Cruise? Think about it…Exactly.) I think there may be a different potential successor waiting in the wings…
this is smoke. renner will die in the film. heard he’s the vengeful son of jim phelps and hence the ‘surprise baddy’.
makes perfect sense to me – first up the phelps angle is a great way to justify a fourth entry (and hence a plausible premise), and secondly, there’s just NO WAY he gets the Bourne Legacy job if there’s a chance Par want to keep him to headline M:I into the future.
in other words, him doing M:I 5 has to be off the table for him to get the competing spy franchise.
Thanks for ruining the movie. Jerk…
Renner is a real talent. Hearing amazing word on this new film He is definitely on his way to being box office with these high profile projects coming out.
I don’t get the love fest for Renner. Sure, he can brood, but can he do anything else?
How old is Tom Cruise again?
It’s pretty unlikely that Renner would commit himself to two different spy franchises. I don’t want anything spoiled for me, but it’s probably safe to say that his role in M:I4 is a one-time thing. But maybe Josh Holloway from “Lost” has a bigger role than the trailers indicate thus far?
Who cares how old he is? What does that have to do with anything?
At his present age he could kick your ass down the block and back again with no problem.
Are you saying he isn’t believable in “physically demanding” roles? He’s always been in great shape his whole career and I don’t see anything different now.
Try another comment…one with a point.
It just seems so sudden and desperate to go back to a dying action franchise you’ve originally been kicked out of after failing to revive the United Artists brand with two lukewarm “Oscar bait” movies.
He’s taking over this franchise just like Emma Roberts is taking over the Scream franchise.
I hope your being sarcastic? Sometimes it’s hard to tell around here. Anyway Totally off topic but Jill Roberts is dead. Wes Craven Kevin Williamson won’t do a Halloween Resurrection.
But a Scream 5?
Renner’s a good actor, a very good one too. But he’s no leading man..for a whole franchise?! c’mon people…
Look at his body of work – he is primed and ready for a lead role and will knock your socks off
If they’re going to replace Cruise, they should do it with someone who is worthy, meaning, someone with box office draw.
Whatever you think of Cruise, he is (was?) one of the genuine superstars of cinema. Renner, for all this inflated talk of his so called ability, has not got the box office pull, or the looks of a leading man, and should stick to the supporting roles, which is where he belongs.
Renner broods just as much as Jensen Ackles on Supernatural, and has shown just as much range.
This is hilarious! I imagine Cruise would have flipped if he heard about this.
They needed some other story to drum up some interest in this film. Poor Brad Bird is now getting questions about the “Dark Knight Rises” preview that is going to run in IMAX. When the main interest centers on six minutes taking place before the movie even starts…well.
Meh, it will do fine. I mean it’s the FOURTH movie in this franchise, expectations can’t be that high.
Before you know it Cruise will be the Roger Moore of the MI series a 60 year old man in a shower with a women 40 years younger than him. No surprise of the twist
dumb people Extra..post the whole response
