Lionsgate said today that its remake of Dirty Dancing will get a wide release on July 26, 2013. Deadline broke the news in August that the studio had set Kenny Ortega to direct the period musical drama, a new take on the iconic 1987 film that starred Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in the 1960s-set story of a girl who summers with her family at an upscale Catskills resort and falls for the dance instructor. Ortega was the choreographer on the original movie. Maria Maggenti is writing the script on the redo, which is being produced by Ortega and Debra Martin Chase. Additionally, Lionsgate said The Possession will open on August 31, 2012, in wide release. It was previously dated on January 6, 2012.

Still waiting for the remakes of Westworld, Futureworld, Logan’s Run, and 2001 and…. yeah that Star Wars thing…
Did we not learn anything from FOOTLOOSE?!?!
Yes we learned a lot from the remake of Footloose. It was GREAT!! Have seen it 3 times and plan to see it some more!
Or “Fame?!”
Dirty dancing its way straight to home video.
No one replaces Swayze.
Nice to see that Hollywood still can’t learn from the mistakes of others.
I wonder if Footloose’s failure made them pause for a second, or if they’re too high on remakes they’re never going to give up, hell or high water.
The new Footloose was not a failure! It was the best remake I have ever seen. Love It!
Joy! Stop it! Just… STOP IT!!
I don’t get the need for a remake when the original is already loved by so many. I don’t think anyone can match or succeed the chemistry of Swayze and Grey which is pretty much why the film was a great success in the first place. Most romantic pairings on film suffer from a dearth of chemistry which was not the problem with the original film.
I don’t even like the original ‘Dirty Dancing’- but I know a lot of people who do. And NOT ONE of them has expressed anything but revulsion at the idea of a remake… And still it marches on? And then the studio will wonder, “Gee, what what went wrong here?” ?!?
Now with that there is NO DOUBT WHATSOEVER:
There IS something in the water in Hollywood.
-’effin idiots.
FAME. FOOTLOOSE. DIRTY DANCING. God forbid, what’s next? GREASE?
Yikes maybe “Roadhouse”.
Don’t give them ideas!
At the rate Hollywood is going with remake’s I wouldn’t be surprised if someday they will try to remake Gone with the Wind or It’s a Wonderful Life. I didn’t really mind Footloose and Fame being remade, because I had only seen each of the originals once, be remaking Dirty Dancing is just wrong. It shouldn’t be touched.
Whoever are the investors, you don’t appear to be too bright.
This should be a crime!!! A monkey could pick better projects than these studios.
Pat just turned over in his grave. Thanks!
Derek Hough should be in it. Or jennifer grey as the mentor…..
Excellent suggestion, Jake! Although I’m generally not in favor of remakes, there’s no reason why the 2013 “Dirty Dancing” should try to be a replica of the beloved original. And even if it is, the only young actor/dancer who could make it work is Derek Hough, the true “star” of TV’s “Dancing with the Stars”, whose superb choreography, dancing and chemistry with his many partners (including Jennifer Grey, who is twice his age) is the only reason I (and, apparently, millions of others) watch that otherwise abysmal show. People seem to forget that Patrick Swayze was no overnight sensation. He first appeared in a small role in a 1979 quickie “Skatetown U.S.A.” but his solo dance number so impressed me and a producer friend that we picked him out for immediate leading man stature. We turned out to be right, but it took poor Mr. Swayze 8 more years of toiling in crummy action films and one successful TV mini-series before “Dirty Dancing” came along. Then, since Hollywood rarely makes musicals anymore, Patrick appeared in only one more surprise smash hit (“Ghost”)before his tragic death. Although Derek Hough has completed an independent dance movie, he continues to toil on “DWTS” while the studio heads continue to shove manufactured no-talents (I won’t name names, you know who I mean)in hapless moviegoers’ faces. Where is Louis B. Mayer when we need him?
The cynical truth is that as long as they control costs, this film will make money. It’s true nobody will beat Buddy and Jennifer’s performances, but creative excellence isn’t what this remake is about – commerce is writ large on its withered, black heart.
This is just wrong on so many levels. No one will ever be able to fill Patrick Swayzee’s shoe in this movie. Maybe if we’re lucky the world will end in 2012 and this will never hit theaters.
“Footloose” has been a money maker. Not a huge one but it made money. What remakes do is put a “Spotlight” on the originals and the “Originals” have an increase in home video sales and the originals have get a increase in syndication sales. A re-make is a “win-win” for the studios however I agree that remakes suck!
I am actually really curious to see what they do with the remake and I’m sure that there will be some really hot young talent who can bring a new energy to this classic.
Maybe my kids will finally watch this if they make a new one and understand why it’s one of my favorite films.
I think dance and musical films are really in and why not revisit one of the best.
