EXCLUSIVE: Rand Holston is leaving CAA, the talent agency where he spent the last 28 years. I’m hearing this might be one of several exits to take place over the next three weeks. The agency confirmed that Holston is leaving. I’m told he is meeting with other agencies, and he will land at one of them before year’s end. His longtime writer and director clients include Stephen King, Rob Reiner, Wolfgang Petersen, Robert Towne, John Moore, Marshall Herskovitz, Jordan Kerner, Ed Zwick, Jim Ivory, Bruce Robinson and Jon Avnet.

Why all the exits from CAA?
come on I’m sure he’s really expensive and frankly not covering… let someone else who needs the gravity of his clients pay the premium as CAA does not…
Rand is a great guy and a terrific agent. What a loss for CAA.
Terrific agent with a terrific client list. I sure hope they didn’t push him out.
It’s just what happens at CAA when you don’t own a piece and you get too old. No one is safe there anymore, but the top guys.
Rand was my agent at CAA or many years — many years ago now that I think of it. He’s wonderful guy…. and I never believed any of that stuff about Ovitz’s foot soldiers.
One of the great gentlemen in the business. I have worked with him for 27 years and he has always been a great agent and a better person. He will do great by whoever hires him.
I’d guess it was a dispute over partnership. Rand has made the agency quite a lot of $ over the years and likely felt entitled to ownership. Agents tend to keep score.
In regard to the Partner issue, please forgive the question but what happens when a Partner leaves or retires? Do they buy them out or does the agent keep a piece of the pie for profit making in the future?
So how many “silent” partners do they have exactly, and what kind of a stake do they hold relative to the “publicly-known” partners?
None of the “imminent exits” are agents under 40… hmmmmm.
In addition to being a great agent, the man has arguably the greatest moustache in the business. It will be missed.
His moustache (and his gentlemanly ways) were second only to that of Rick Nicita. Though it should be said that Rick eventually shaved…
What about Jon Levin’s mustache? He was a Sonny Bono look alike for years. I guess a memo went out at the agency asking for clean shaven faces cause Jon shaved his too like Rick. These are company men after all. They drive the same cars, vacation in the same places, wear the same suits… it’s very creepy.
And yes there were foot soldiers. They just had tiny little feet.
Something tells me that guys who have been there that long, are that age and are that senior are going to comply with the new agency “mustache policy”. These things are more likely the result of one’s wife’s newly-minted mustache policy.
On that note: they should have waited until later in the week to let go of Holston, out of respect for this being Mustache Awareness Month and all.
Rand is a loyal, hard workIng agent, that would go to the ends of the earth for his clients. It’s sad CAA doesn’t appreciate those qualities in an agent!!!!
What they need to do is get all these “great” agents that have left or been pushed out of CAA and start their own agency and take over!
Build it, and they will come! The next agency will be happy they got him! Good Luck!
Class, heart, and elegance with a smoking ‘stache.
But all you CAA haters out there, remember, even Derek Jeter’s getting old.
Rand Holston (CAA Agent) helped me get the rights to a Stephen King Short Story (Stephen King is his client) which I turned into a Short Film. As a USC Film Student, that act really meant a lot to me. I cold-wrote a letter to Rand and he responded and secured the rights to Stephen King’s Story for me. It was 1 of the best things to ever happen to me.
You Need an Editor.
Please go to UTA. He’d be a great addition.
Rand was my first boss out of school and not only taught me about the agency business, but showed me how you can be a loyal, hard working, honest and genuine professional even when most people around you are not. Every single one of his clients considered him an friend first and agent second. Will forever be grateful for the experience. Thank you Rand.
Rand’s qualities are indisputable. What a loss for CAA!
