The Breaking In gang is getting a new boss. After a hot pursuit by the producers, Megan Mullally has closed a rich deal to join the Fox comedy as a new regular. Mullally’s character will take over high-tech security firm Contra Security, which had been run by Oz (Christian Slater), who will now have his own boss. The high-profile cast addition is part of significant creative changes the comedy created by Adam F. Goldberg and Seth Gordon is undergoing heading into Season 2. The “mission of the week” concept where members of the Contra team go out of the office on a different assignment in every episode will be scaled back as Breaking In will segue into a more office-based comedy. Production on Season 2 is slated to begin in early January. The series, which recently came back from a cancellation for the second time, is expected to be part of Fox’s two-hour midseason comedy block on Tuesday. Sony TV and Happy Madison are producing, with Goldberg, Gordon and Doug Robinson executive producing. Mullally’s deal for Breaking In will allow her to continue her co-starring gig on Adult Swim’s Childrens Hospital and her recurring roles on Parks & Recreation and Happy Endings. On the Fox series, Gersh-repped Mullally joins Slater, Bret Harrison, Alphoso McAuley, Michael Rosenbaum and Odette Annable, who may be in fewer episodes as she is also a regular on Fox’s House.

This is huge news for that show. Wasn’t a fan of the pilot but it won me over during it’s short run by the end. It needed to grow and getting someone to play off of Slater was the way to go and they landed someone who can do that. Excited to watch now…
Are you kidding that this show gets ANOTHER reprive and yet Veronica Mars is off the air?
That was sooooooooooooooooo many years ago. It’s gone.
Gone but not forgotten.
And it has one heck of a p***ed of fanbase. You do NOT want to mess with this fanabse right now, we’re still fragile right now. You better step OFF- I’m sorry, that got a little heated.
“Joey” is another show that still is off the air.
And bring back Barnaby Jones, dammit!
I may watch now!
So….basically, let’s take everything that made the first season awesome and get rid of it so that if it fails they can say that they tried. Seriously, that’s what the whole show is about, the team going on security missions. Take that out and you pretty much have a version of The Office that nobody will watch because they can watch it on DVD or NBC already. Why mess with a good thing?
But “nobody” watched the first season, they have to do something different this time around to lure folks into the show. Also, I suspect of budget reasons.
I think the move to an office based comedy rather than going on missions might be a cost saving move. If they don’t go on missions they won’t need new sets every week. I liked the show but it didn’t get good ratings so they probably don’t think they are messing with a good thing.
Because that show that was so awesome the way it was got cancelled.
pretty much same thought i had. The mission of the week made it more fun. so now reading this article i foresee the office except the bosses arent idiot guy and the smart lady it’ll be immoral smart rich guy v immoral rich woman, but yeah they need to keep it with the weekly missions or else it will just be foxes spin on the office
Hurray!! People were so excited for us to bring back a show that we couldn’t care less about. Let’s turn it into something completely different! Raises all around!
Well, I guess this means I have another TV show to start watching!
A private security outfit gets an unneeded female boss…hmm, sounds familiar–Human Target, anyone?
Swell.
Now it’s going to be ‘The Office’ in a security firm.
Whoopee…
What is the point of bringing back a show if you’re just going to ruin it with changes anyway? Stupid, stupid Fox.
Never heard of this show (if the first season was so awesome why did it not get renewed in the first place), can’t stand Fox, but love Megan Mullally. Will actually watch now!
The problem with this show has always and will continue to be Slater… a has been who buried his own career. And Mullaly? Nothing exciting there. How many chances are you going to give a show that simply doesn’t work to keep Adam Sandler happy?
hate to say it, but I have to agree. he’s weirdly awkward in the role. should have been rob lowe or somebody a bit more “commanding” and would have anchored the show better.
To all those suggesting that the show was cancelled because it wasn’t good, maybe you should consider that there are other factors that impact on a show’s audience size, like the show’s compatibility with its lead-in, or its promo campaign. The truth is that this show was already a lot funnier and a lot more inventive than a lot of higher-rated comedies on CBS, so ratings aren’t always a good indicator of quality. Retooling it seems like a budgetary move, which might not have been necessary if they didn’t add an expensive line item like Mullaly.
Typical network thinking. Cut costs on what’s important, spend money on a big name. That way, when the show fails, the execs have a high profile target to blame.
Very pumped for Breaking In’s return. One of the better comedies in a sea of crap. So sick of dorky female buddy comedies, couples in different phases of their lives and Modern Family ripoffs. Love all the fanboy references. If you haven’t seen, give it a shot.
I’m a fan of season one and both of these changes sound wrong-headed to me. You don’t give characters jobs on a tv series that we can’t see them do. And adding a boss, usually to create fake conflict, is rarely a good thing. The “Human Target” analogy is a good one. I’m far less interested in this series returning now.
As long as you relize that you sound like an idiot…….in sorry but seasons 2 & 3 of VM sucked..
Best comedy on Fox last year. Thank God there’s something different for us gamers, comic book geeks, aside from The Walking Dead.
Personally I thought this show was appallingly bad. Since they’re giving it another chance I’m glad to see them putting more effort into it. Mullally probably doesn’t come too cheap, so they must be genuinely invested in trying.
The jokes on this show were hack. It’s basically Whitney for puerile teenagers and stoners.
I’m glad it’s coming back. I like geeky comedies. I think they are trying to capture the Big Bang Theory crowd. I watched the first season and will watch this one. I think it’s funny that some of the actors moved on to other shows and now have to balance two shows. Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor from Smallville) was so different from his previous character that I didn’t recognize him at first, and I had read that he was going to be on the show. Ok so the hair had a little bit to do with it. Any show has got to be better than that god awful New Girl that they are trying to tell us is a hit. Yeah get rid of that no talent, God Aweful Zooey DeChannel and it will be.
DUDE! Do the fans have any say in this? I was one of the few banded together with others to get the word out to help save this show… (Twice as humble as I am Meek)This story make my stomach flip flop.. I think the appeal of this show revolved around the mix between the in and out office vibe.. I love to see the gang get into so much trouble… neways.. I will wait and see.. btw nobody has returned my calls people!
I loved “Breaking In” and I was very disappointed when FOX made the mistake of cancelling it. I’m glad it’s coming back but I don’t think Mulally is a good or necessary addition to the cast. Christian Slater shines in the role of boss. Mulally is always so shrill and annoying…why can’t FOX get it right?
So they can’t afford to pay Michael Rosenbaum to come back due to budget issues, but they can afford to pay Megan Mullally to be added to the show? That doesn’t make any sense.
thats not what any article i read said at all. Rosenbaum has contractual obligations else where that keep him from being on the show which is why he will appear but not be a regular. more to the point i have noticed no mention of Trevor Moore. and the people who didn’t like the show and called it trash i’m guessing either you only watched one episode or didn’t actually watch it at all. its was a good smart show. i personally also hated New Girl at first but its grown on me. you know i dont get why people on these boards feel the need to rip stuff so hard. personally i dont know what modern family rip off is out there right now but i give every show writer and actor credit for trying unless when i watch i can see the lack of effort. and believe me Fox dont care if Sandler is happy or not.they want to keep viewers happy. if we aint happy they loose money if Sandler aint happy the roll thier eyes and say screw you.after the protest last year they realized loosing viewers for this show would also hurt Glee and Raising Hope thats why the show is back. lets face it fox is loosing a couple of shows after this year. its loosing House because hugh laurie wants to be done with it, Fringe is also in the gutter based on it got to far out and repetitve and predictible. notice it moved to the friday night death slot. Rather than saying bad things about these shows lets rip American Idol and X Factor since they are pretty much the same thing. I hate them both I hate reality tv.
