EXCLUSIVE: MGM is in talks to acquire Killer Pizza, an Adam Green-scripted adaptation of the Greg Taylor book about a 14-year old boy who lands a summer job at a pizza joint that is actually a front for a monster hunting enterprise. Rafaella De Laurentiis is producing with 1492 Pictures and CJ Entertainment. 1492 Entertainment’s Chris Columbus brought it to MGM after meeting with the brass there and sensing the studio’s appetite for Gremlins and Goonies-type fare, and Killer Pizza fit that bill. After a long period of being frozen, MGM has become an active buyer, recently partnering with Sony on the Antoine Fuqua-directed Eminem-starrer Southpaw after DreamWorks let that project go. The company also acquired Where’s Waldo, which had been developed as an animated film property by Illumination Entertainment. APA and Industry rep the writer and CAA repped the book.

they’re having quite the week…. if they could find an irrelevant board game or a long-forgotten atari game to adapt they’d have a full slate of hits… David O’Selznick would be proud
I don’t think this is a spec, really — Fleming’s own story from May 2010 says CJ funded the development. Here’s the link: http://www.deadline.com/2010/05/1492-pictures-and-cj-entertainment-scare-up-thriller-trio/#more-44295
Cool to see MGM getting back into the development business in a real way, tho. Looking forward to hearing who’s going to direct this. Not srue I want to see the Harry Potter 1 version of this. Maybe the del Toro version???
It says Adam Greend wrote the script and he generally directs the movies he writes so my guess is he will direct it. After cult hits “Hatchet” and “Frozen” it’s time for Green to get his shot at a major studio release and this seems up his alley.
Are they still just a co-financer?
Adam Green will direct it if he wrote it. About time a studio nails him down as it seems he only does his own production company’s stuff and has not had interest in the studio side of things. Wish I could have that career. Staff writing is sucking my will to live and I’d give my right boob to get my own movies made my own way like this dude does. Kudos, man. Frozen was the best movie of last year and everyone knows it. You’ve got more fans in this town than you possibly realize and I’m envious and in awe of how you continue to churn ‘em out. How do I work at ArieScope instead of here??
Frozen was the best movie of last year? Really??
I wouldn’t go so far as to say Frozen was “the best movie of last year” but I’d agree with you that it was one of the best suspense thrillers of last year at least. Sorry, but Toy Story 3 kind of trumps all.
Color me impressed. Glickman working with Green? Maybe MGM has hope for reinventing itself to be a hip and filmmaker friendly outfit. Would love to see the lion roar again.
Never got the love for Green’s Hatchet movies (though I admittedly liked the second one remarkably more than the first) but Spiral was genius even if no one besides me saw it. That being said I saw the circus that was the fan line to meet him at Comic-Con when we were there with IM2 and the man’s got a huge hard core following and knows how to work a crowd better than anyone, that’s for sure.
