EXCLUSIVE: After experiencing health complications from a recent heart surgery, director Curtis Hanson is getting help to finish the principal photography on Of Men and Mavericks, the Walden Media drama about big wave surfer Jay Moriarity. Michael Apted is going to step in and complete the final 15 days of principal photography for Hanson, starting on Monday. They are shooting in Northern California, where Moriarity became known for riding treacherous waves called Mavericks. The film stars Gerard Butler, with newcomer Jonny Weston playing Moriarity. Fox will release the film.

Something about this makes me feel good. I don’t know if they are friends or not, but it makes me feel like Apted thought, “Oh crap, Curt is having health problems? I can come help out if you guys need me to.” Maybe it is more cynical than that and the studio is panicked and is like, “Get someone in there! Anyone!” But I like my heartwarming take on it better.
I like your version too. Let’s hope it’s true. I’ve also heard the script is good and I’m an admirer of Hanson’s work. I’m also an admirer of Apted’s. Let’s hope they mesh well.

Apted is a good man, hard working Hollywood family. Glad someone competent could finish Hansen’s project. Going to take someone with leverage to deal with Butler and his career free fall.
Michael Apted is truly a wonderful human being; he extends himself to help others no matter who they may be. It’s quite heartening to see this kindness and professional respect operating in Hollywood. I wish more powerful people would take their behavioral cues from Michael.

I read the script and thought it was terrible, turgid melodrama. And when the title changed from “Mavericks” to “Of Men and Mavericks,” it didn’t fill me with hope.
