On the eve of the new Muppets movie opening on Wednesday, the Jim Henson Co. has set up another hybrid human-puppet project, this time on primetime TV. NBC has closed a script deal for The New Nabors, a comedy about a human family and the repercussions they encounter living next door to a family of puppets. NBC, of course, had success in the human-puppet family sitcom arena with Alf in the late 1980s. Feature writer John Hoffman (Fox 2000′s Afterlife) and 30 Rock executive producer John Riggi wil
l write the script for The New Nabors, which they developed with Lisa Henson and The Jim Henson Co. (I hear the spelling of the show’s title is an homage to actor-singer Jim Nabors.) Lisa Henson, Hoffman and Riggi are executive producing, with longtime Henson producer Alex Rockwell also attached. CAA-repped Hoffman and UTA-repped Riggi are managed by Anonymous. Puppets have been off the major broadcast networks for awhile, with Fox’s underrated single-camera comedy Greg The Bunny as the most recent example.

Haha, sounds funny and different. I’d check it out!
This is part of the long range plan begun with Seaseme Street to make humans more comfortable with ETs. By mainstreaming “alternate embodiments” of life forms, humans become comfortable with intelligent life that is unlike themselves.
It’s only a matter of time now, perhaps as little as a dozen decades, before humanity learns the truth about life in the universe.
….well, somebody had to say it….
Wait… Whitney Cummings ISN’T a puppet?
Hi-yoh!
No, Whitney is a time traveler. How else do you explain her claim that she’s only 28 years old?
When are the muppets gonna make a massive comeback, like they have before?
Is this the the Jim Henson Co. doing the Fraggle Rock movie and the sequel to The Dark Crystal? Because those two projects are going well aren’t they?
Puppet neighbors? Really? This is what it has come to? It sounds utterly absurd. Is this yet another idea from the mind that green-lighted rebooting The Munsters? Between reality shows, competition shows, shows with NCISVUCIS somewhere in the title, glib twentysomething ensembles – and now puppets… There really is no reason to watch network TV. Thank God we’ll have all those anti-Obama ads from Crossroads GPS to fill the time.
Take a look at THE MUPPETS – new movie is great fun and if this show has some of that spirit, it’s a great idea.
Hey Willy! Where’s the cat! Hah!

I think its a smart risky move. NBC can’t dig a better hole so they might as well take on something different with hopeful aspirations. The world can use some Henson right about now, it was groundbreaking then as it will now. Besides, give these poor kids something decent to watch that we adults can glance at too.
Hilarious! The Henson kids are as talented as the Menendez brothers. This horrible idea will fail.
And not one word about “Farscape.” I guess I’ll get my five years worth of discs out and watch them again.
