NBC has handed out a pilot order to Isabel, a single-camera family comedy with a twist from producer Aaron Kaplan. The network bought the project on spec, which was written by Howard Busgang and Tom Nursall. The two developed the comedy with Kaplan and French-Canadian TV producer Jocelyn Deschenes through their Kapital Entertainment and Sphere Media, respectively. Inspired by the French-Canadian series Le Monde De Charlotte, Isabel centers on an otherwise normal angry middle-class family that wrestles with the challenges of everyday life while raising a daughter who has magical qualities. Busgang, Nursall, Kaplan and Deschenes are expected to executive produce. Casting is starting right away, with the pilot slated to shoot in Los Angeles. Canadian-born Busgang and Nursall are Los Angeles-based but have spent the last few years working primarily in Canada as creators/writers/executive producers. This marks the 10th pilot order for 28-month-old Kapital Entertainment. This season alone it is the company’s third, along with the Kirstie Alley-starring comedy The Manzanis at ABC and the untitled Dan Fogelman comedy, also at ABC. That represents half of all off-cycle pilots ordered by the broadcast networks so far this year. With its magical elements, Isabel taps into the fairytale genre that is red-hot at the moment with breakout new series, ABC’s Once Upon A Time and NBC’s Grimm. For NBC, this is the second early pilot order along with the cast-contingent pickup for comedy Save Me. Isabel also marks the second comedy project based on/inspired by a French-Canadian series this season, joining Fox’s version of Les Invincibles. Busgang and Nursall are with Canada’s Characters Talent Agency and Circle Of Confusion.

Aaron Kaplan is a great guy, but he’s no Howard Busgang. Howard is one of the nicest and funniest people in all of English-speaking North America.
Kaplan is killing it right now. good for him.
If they’re remaking French-Canadian tv-shows, someone should get their hands on the rights to 19-2. It’s by far the best cop show of the century.
Is the daughter’s name Tabitha?
That or Sabrina. They also possibly live on Waverly Place.
Howard and Tom are awesome. Good on ‘em.
See, adapting French Canadian shows into English American shows is ok with me. It’s when English Canadian shows get adapted into American shows is when it bothers me. What’s the difference anyway? They’re both English, we really don’t need to “remake it” the cultures are practically the same for the most part. And I say this as a Canadian.
Is one of the little girl’s magical powers the ability to get people to turn on NBC? Nah. No one would believe that.
What a burn to WME. Kapital is outperforming the whole WME department.
WME – where only the weak survive.
Thank you.
Oh hai thar “Wizards of Waverly Place”
Hmmm…an ordinary, middle-class family raise a child who is “magical”. Wonder where they got that idea? *cough* Muggles *cough* Potter *cough*
This idea was old long before the first Harry Potter book was published.
No one is more talented and deserving of this opportunity than Howard.
Look at you Aaron! Congrats!
Well deserved!!!!
Where’s the US version of “Corner Gas”?
Liked their writing, especially the movie Without a Paddle
