EXCLUSIVE: NBC continues its aggressive push this development season with early pilot orders. The latest project to get the green light is the comedy starring Sarah Silverman, which the network landed in August after a bidding war with a hefty put pilot commitment. The half-hour, from 20th Century Fox TV and Imagine TV, is a pet project of Imagine principal Ron Howard. Loosely based on Silverman’s life, the untitled single-camera comedy stars the comedian as a woman readjusting to the single life after a decade-long live-in relationship. Silverman wrote the script with Dan Sterling and Jon Schroeder, who were writer-producers on her self-titled Comedy Central series. Silverman, Sterling and Imagine’s Howard, Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo are executive producing, with Schroeder serving as co-exec producer. The order for the Sarah Silverman project follows NBC’s recent pilot pickups for Beautiful People, a futuristic drama by Michael McDonald, and comedies Isabel and Save Me, which are now casting. Additionally, the J.J. Abrams/Eric Kripke adventure thriller Revolution and crime drama Blue Tilt have pilot production commitments at the network. NBC now houses 3 female comedians known for their raunchy, no-holds-barred standup: Silverman, Whitney Cummings, creator and star of her own eponymous comedy series, which has received a full-season pickup by the network, and Chelsea Handler, who is behind the midseason series Are You There, Chelsea?, which will be paired with Whitney.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

Maybe they can pair this with Whitney and call it the Annoying Comedy hour.
I don’t know, I don’t think NBC would go for that.
Oh wait, that was a joke. I think the reason I didn’t think it was a joke was because you’re not funny.
Go watch Two and a Half Men.
they are already pairing whitney with the new chelsea handler show… so gross
Who at NBC thinks America is just waiting for shows by three skanky, vulgar unfunny comediennes? I trust he/she has the next job lined up because this will be a ratings train wreck
Maybe it’s the same person who greenlit the film ”Snakes on A Plane.” When that project was announced I thought, ”most people are nervous about flying and have strong fears of deadly snakes, yet a major studio is combining the two phobias in one big-budget movie. Are they insane?” Big, big flop.
It takes little for basic cable shows to seem ”successful” especially if idiot TV critics overrate them, but you can bet the ranch that the Handler, Cummings and Silverman shows won’t last.
Hey, how about “Skanks On A Plane”? It could be “Pan Am”, but with Whitney, Sarah and Chelsea.
Agree completely. I actually like Silverman, but her Comedy Central show was unfunny and way overrated. It felt all improv, and more like sketches than story-driven scripts. That won’t fly anywhere but Comedy Central.
Sorry sooner3, but her her show felt like improv? That doesn’t make any sense. The scenes in each show build on an absurd premise to its conclusion. Honestly I feel like your comment is the kind of thing someone who doesn’t really understand comedy says, to insult stuff they don’t get.
If they keep this up they are going to appeal to two markets: LA and NYC. That’s not a way to climb out of 4th place.
Yes, but network execs LIVE in either LA or New York, so all their liberal friends will tell them what a great job they’re doing – until they’re fired. But we’ve already seen that liberals always prefer positive feedback to being correct.
So flavor of the moment and doomed to fail it’s unreal.
No, its real.
Sarah Silverman on Network tv? That will never work.
I am a fan is Sarah. Saw her perform at a charity event. She was hard and dirty and vulgar. I love her but I thought that old crowd would turn on her. She killed! It took time but Sarah wins you over with a combination of wit charm and edge.
YOU CAN’T DO THAT ON NETWORK TV!!!!!!!!!!
They will ruin her with lame sex jokes. It will premiere well then die quickly and Sarah will be frustrated.
Anonymous – the jerk store called – they’re out of you.
Sarah is an American Original and deserves all of her success. I look forward to seeing this.
I love Whitney Cummins … and then I watched her show. Please, NBC. Don;t make me hate Sarah Silverman. Please?
Whitney’s show is a lot better than her stand up. I don’t know what you’re smoking.
You guys probably really shouldn’t be spending your political capital on this one.
@Matt,
If you’re defending Whitney, I know what you’re toking. The mean green, my friend.
That’s the crazy part – Whitney’s standup was NEVER good. Don’t know why they thought giving her a show about nothing would be a smart move.
Pairing Whitney and the Chelsea Handler show…”Hello NBC… Nobody’s watching”
And the race to the bottom of the cultural trash bin continues. Maybe Janeane Garofalo can co-star so I can avoid the two most annoying and unfunny women in comedy.
Hey that was uncalled for. Janeane has no dog in this fight, unless she’s got some papers and put a muzzle on that dog Silverman…

NBC – NO BODY CARES.
Sorry, but the vast majority of female comedians just aren’t funny… and Sarah Silverman is actually one of the worst out there. He humor appeals to the lowest common denominator. Its too saturated with child-like voices and lame punchlines. If you want a show with a female comedian, why not get Lisa Lampanelli or Judy Gold. At least they are decent.
Because they only like funny women who are thin.
Also that female comedians jab makes you sound like a low level agent.
There’s such a dense fog of snark and smug on here I can barely see the screen. Way to pick on the underdog, ya buncha jerks. It’d be WAY LESS interesting to hear about every move you all make.
How reassuring that everyone seems to find that sorry excuse for an entertainer as vulgar and unfunny as I do!! I never could understand how she could make a career out of the crassest material, ler alone her grating voice and unsuita
… unsuitable stage persona.
Whitney is clever and has a talent for material. She just sucks as an actor. 2 Broke Girls is brilliant. But that’s only because Kat Dennings brings it to life!! HOME RUN on 2 Broke Girls.
Silverman makes my ears hurt. The whole pot head’s girlfriend thing just doesn’t work for me unless it’s done with subtlety. She tries too hard at it. Her material would be brilliant if performed by an eccentric black gay guy, around Kat Dennings age.
Handler?? She’s pretty fun to watch so we’ll see…
“Her material would be brilliant if performed by an eccentric black gay guy…”
I know just the fella. He’s FAAAAAAB-BULOOOOOOOUS!
Since anyone commenting on this show don’t like her, can anyone tell me any comedians/comediannes that you have taste in?? Because they don’t have shows now. (I can be corrected.)
What happened to developing shows around funny and “likeable” female characters? You know, the kid of person that you might actually care about. Whitney, Chelsea and Silverman may be funny, but they are anything but likeable.
Can’t believe people still consider this woman funny, which is just pitiful! Another failure for NBC taking place.
I love Sarah Silverman but her brand of comedy will never work on network tv. Whitney is just painful to watch.
Tough crowd.
The most grating this about this isn’t that all of you seem to hate Sarah Silverman. It’s that this would have been an inspired idea 10 years ago. Today, between this and the Munsters, it just feels like Greenblatt is desperately trying to scoop up anything that has any brand recognition whatsoever.
It truly is amazing how stupid the suits at NBC are these days. Silverman couldn’t get ratings enough to stay on Comedy Central so NBC is gonna put her on network? I guess the goal is to get absolutely no one watching NBC. Unbelievable.
Allow me to clear this up: Television is a business and it is the job of networks to create a product they believe people will want to consume, regardless whether or not it is a quality product. They are not interested in quality. Sadly, they are capitalists and are only interested in marketable trends. There is a trend in entertainment that women are not visible on television in leading roles (neither are Blacks, but that’s another topic) and so these shit shows are attempting to capitalize on the insecurities and perceived low-intelligence of women – not in the show’s quality, but with the idea that if women see other women on television they’ll watch. They are trying to build coalitions, building blocks. It is pandering. It is also sad and insulting, and I’m a man.
But that’s the problem. NBC are terrible on the business side. If Silverman’s critically acclaimed show on Comedy Central couldn’t draw flies and got cnacelled, what in the heck are the NBC execs smoking greenliighting an almost identical show for network TV.
Bottom line, the current development execs in film and television haven’t a clue as to what their audiences want and they keep trying to sell people the shows that they like instead. Silverman plays strictly to the band and that’s why every show she’s ever been in has failed. And why this show will fail as well.
The people who are skewering Silverman for “not being funny” are not being honest with themselves. You may not like her or you may not like the fact she is getting this opportunity, but she IS funny. I am assuming this show will be different from the program on Comedy Central. It may or may not work out, but it is a little disingenuous to say it is doomed because they picked S.S. for it. Let’s try to keep this dialogue honest, guys!
