LOS ANGELES, CA, November 18, 2011 – Open Road Films has acquired all U.S. rights to the romantic action comedy Outrun — starring, written and co-directed by comic talent Dax Shepard (NBC’s “Parenthood”) with an all-star ensemble cast including Kristen Bell, Bradley Cooper, Tom Arnold, Beau Bridges, Kristin Chenoweth, David Koechner, Michael Rosenbaum, Joy Bryant, and Ryan Hansen. David Palmer co-directed with Shepard. The announcement was made today by Tom Ortenberg, CEO of Open Road Films.
Outrun is the story of Charlie Bronson (Shepard), a former getaway driver who busts out of the Witness Protection Program to drive his girlfriend (Kristen Bell) to Los Angeles so she can land her dream job. Their road trip grows awkwardly complicated, when they are chased by the feds (led by Tom Arnold), and increasingly dangerous, when Charlie’s former gang of criminals (led by Bradley Cooper) enter the fray.
Outrun was produced by Andrew Panay with Nate Tuck, Kim Waltrip and Jim Casey. Exclusive Media Group acquired the international rights.
“Dax Shepard is one of the most exciting comedic talents working today,” stated Ortenberg. “He has assembled a brilliantly talented cast in a wildly fun and funny movie. We are thrilled to be in business with him, as well as producer Andrew Panay, and look forward to bringing Outrun to audiences around the country.”
“My number-one passion after Kristen and work is motorsports — I’m interested in almost anything with an engine. This movie is like a giant cake made with my three favorite ingredients: my fiancée, my best friends and all my favorite cars. It was a six week-long birthday party!” explains Shepard.
The deal was negotiated on behalf of Open Road Films by Ortenberg, General Counsel and Executive Vice President of Operations and Business Affairs, Elliott Kleinberg, and Senior Vice President of Acquisitions, Ben Cotner. Jamie Feldman and Linda Lichter of Lichter, Grossman, Nichols, Adler and Feldman negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers.

They are truly nice people. Good to see them succeed!
One thing you gotta like about Bradley Cooper, he does look out for his friends. Between this and Brothers Justice, shows the guy likes to have fun and being a star in everything isn’t his focus.
Dax Shepard is “truly exciting?” To who? Certainly not audiences, according to box office numbers. I can’t stand the guy personally or professionally. I used to love Kristen until I worked with her. That’s fine if you want to involve yourself with a bunch of charities, but if you’re going to tweet and brag about all that involvement, maybe you should actually BE involved instead of letting your assistants do all the work for you while you go bounce around town with your costars.
Cooper, on the other hand, is a genuinely decent guy who deserves every bit of his success. Guy would rather go have a beer with the crew than go “be seen” at some fancy restaurant with producers or other “important” people.
Sorry I let you go, Cash.
I see you still haven’t gotten over it.
Oh yeah, before I forget – remember the time I had you walk my dogs? um, yeah, the pooper scooper. You forget it in your car. I’m gonna need it back for my new assistant. Thanks buddy.
What exactly was the career of Dax before he hooked up with Kristen Bell and all her connections? He was the guy on Punkd for a season or two and thats about it.
I have no idea who the haters are, but I assisted in post, and I can tell you that, even on repeated viewings, this film is really funny. And above and beyond simply being funny, the script works really well – it’s strong and unpredictable, yet perfectly timed. I’ve worked on dozens of films, and a script this good is really, really rare.
I also liked the performances a lot – there was a lot of great, screwball energy going on, of the best kind. I had no idea who Dax Shepard was outside his name being vaguely familar, but I am a real fan now.
Cooper and Dax do seem like decent guys. Andrew Panay is not
Same old, same old story with same old, same old ensemble cast. Might as well get Garry Marshall to direct it.
Uh, Jennifer, Direct what? It’s in the “can”. Try reading the stuff…
Well if it’s anything like Brother’s Justice or When in Rome, then… um…
Seems like a few real actors doing a favor for a pretend actor/director. Pass
SO wrong about Panay. He’s not only becoming one of the hottest producers in town, he’s a VERY decent guy. Crazy, quirky, demanding…sure, but he is a great guy with a straighter than most moral compass.
No, he’s not a good guy. Duh. Sorry, but that’s true. Ask the boys from Tapestry.

Panay is a great guy…and he’s becoming one of the hottest producers in town. Demanding, quirky, hard working? Yes. But, a VERY “decent” guy, with a strong moral compass.
What was this movie’s budget?
Wow, less than a year in business and they’ve already acquired their first straight to DVD release.
This is definitely a straight to DVD title, odd that Bradley Cooper in an ensemble legitimizes it as a theatrical movie. Where’s Mr. Bean’s cameo….?
Also, Open Road needs a publicist, Tom’s quote: “He has assembled a brilliantly talented cast in a wildly fun and funny movie.”
“Fun and funny” translation “straight and really straight to DVD” imho.
Wow, so many snarky, assumptive comments from people who haven’t seen one frame of “Outrun”.
I watched this show a number of times in post; even when I had to QC it, I still had to laugh at my favorite moments. I never got tired of screening this show. That hasn’t happened to me since I worked on “Beavis and Butthead Do America” (which was one of Paramount’s biggest money makers that year.)
Looking forward to seeing this in the theaters, and sending my friends to have a good time watching it. Peace.
I disagree with you… Panay is a fantastic man, talented and so devoted to his work.
This movie seems to have to all package, i m looking forward to seeing it.
Great news for an awesome team! David Palmer and Nate Tuck fly under the radar with these projects, but are truly a driving force behind them. Most people don’t realize that there was a pretty good little bidding war behind the scenes of this film between some major players. They know how to get things made in this town and will continue to build on their success as steadily as any indie producer/director team in town!
This is a great script and was driven by a really great team both in front and behind of the camera who enjoy the process of making movies as a team.
If you’re reading this and in the business of making independent films, Primate has a great model and it’s proving to be a fast track to success.
Couldn’t be happening to a nicer bunch of talented people. Congratulations to them all.
Whoever that sad sad guy Cash is referring to in his hate post above…. it’s certainly not about the integrity-based people this article is about whom I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know.
@ Evelyn Taylor, try harder!
Didn’t CBS Films make this same movie with the Rock called “Faster”? Seems like the exhibitors picked a sloshy acquisitions team in Open Road.
A comedy about a couple being chased by feds and gangsters, sounds like the great pic Midnight Run.
I can’t wait till this movie comes out! I’m a fan of all of them. It’s a pleasure to see them work all together,it shows they are true friends and that they love and respect each other.
how can this be better then?? Creativity can make such good things between a group of people this genuine.
I’m sure we will all see the amazing chemistry that this great group of people can create.
never back down guys…you are great and i’m so proud you’re sharing your work with us!!
You will not meet a better guy than Panay. Is he an easy target for haters? Yes. But that’s just what they are: haters. Panay is one of the sweetest, most loyal guys working in Hollywood. Anyone who says otherwise is simply jealous or has never met him.
