HAMMOND: Murphy Exit Throws Oscars Into Further Chaos
Will The Academy Consider Brian Grazer?
HAMMOND: Oscars Post-Ratner – What Now?
SHOCKER! Brett Ratner Out As Oscar Producer
Eddie Murphy Agrees To Host Oscars; Producers Tell Film Academy It’s Official
UPDATED: Only three months before the Oscars, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences and ABC are almost back to square one. Hours after Brett Ratner tendered his resignation as Oscar producer in the fallout of racy-bordering-on-vulgar public comments and the use of an anti-gay slur, Eddie Murphy has stepped down as host. The move is not entirely unexpected given that Ratner was the one who brought in his Tower Heist star Murphy, and Deadline noted that Ratner’s exit Tuesday gave Murphy the perfect chance to bow out. But it still gives the Academy a big headache having to replace a producer and now a host only three months before the February 26 Academy Awards ceremony. On the other hand, Murphy’s acceptance of the gig was abnormally early. With the two departures, the only key member of the creative team remaining in place is veteran TV producer Don Mischer, who had been originally paired with Ratner. As for potential replacements, Brian Grazer, who produced Tower Heist, is being rumored as a candidate to succeed Ratner. Here is AMPAS’ statement on Murphy’s departure:
Beverly Hills, CA – Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak announced that Eddie Murphy has withdrawn as host of the 84th Academy Awards. “I appreciate how Eddie feels about losing his creative partner, Brett Ratner, and we all wish him well,” said Sherak.
Commented Murphy, “First and foremost I want to say that I completely understand and support each party’s decision with regard to a change of producers for this year’s Academy Awards ceremony. I was truly looking forward to being a part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I’m sure that the new production team and host will do an equally great job.”
Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.

I think Jim Jefferies should host…Maybe coihost with Lisa Lampanelli
Good riddance. Tina Fey is a great choice, but she’s probably too busy to do it. You know who should do it? Angelina Jolie. I don’t know why I thought of her, but it’s a good little three month job that she could treat as an entree into directing and producing, which she wants to do next. And she’d look smashing in the dresses.
Absolutely! Bring Billy back but what about his face? Can anyone bring that back?
I don’t have a problem with Billy Crystal. It’s kind of like the Billy Chapel character in “For the Love of the Game”. But I’m surprised no one has mentioned another obvious choice, Neil Patrick Harris.
I hear Ann Coulter is available. She supports gay rights.
I think they should get Ricky Gervais to host the Oscars. He was hilarious at the Golden Globes.
Craig Ferguson!
Now that would be a hoot.
Absolutely, Craig would be fantastic.
I’m 43, fit the demo they want, and was excited about Eddie hosting. Now I’m not. Ratner took the sword. Maybe because Tower Heist is soft at the BO Eddie thought he’d get out before he’d have to deal with the backlash. He doesn’t need the aggravation, $, or exposure.
Ricky Gervais?
Good for you, Eddie! Stand up to this heterophobic crap coming out of Hollywood. I will not be watching the Oscars this year.
Why not get William Jefferson (Honest F***ing Bill) Clinton? Now that would make this a really BIG show!
That would actually be a really fun show to watch.
Oh, Geeze another hollywood masturbatory awards show – who gives a cr%4? I haven’t been in a theater in 20 years (tell Latisha to get the hell off her cell phone) (what, I have to spray Pam on my shoe soles so I can lift them off the floor?).
You should pay more attention to the declining audience in the theaters and on television rather than give each other hand jobs with another pointless stupid awards show.
Noooooo…bring back Whoopi Goldberg so she can insult and talk trash about conservative Americans who don’t think like she does and drop the ratings back into the tank. That’s the ticket!
I have watched the Oscars once since 1999 and I will not watch such a vulgar event again, ever
I hear James Franco is available
Well I won’t be watching…. Political correctness is ruining this country! one comedian, one movie, one actor, one musician etc… at a time.
With no one left, how about Andrew Dice Clay!!! LOL
Billy Crystal’s plastic surgery would draw too much attention.
I think the biggest mistake was hiring Ratner in the first place. Anybody so stupidly reckless with his public self – when he is clearly on the hot seat as producer of The (Once) Greatest Show On Earth – is simply too stupid to head up such a production. And bringing Murphy in was also stupid because he hasn’t been funny or relevant for at least 15 years. He was only chosen because Ratner thought he could capitalize on “Tower Heist” which is already tanking. The whole thing is stupid. The Oscars need SOMETHING – but Ratner and Murphy aren’t it. Frankly I don’t think anything can save the Oscars because Hollywood lauds people like Ratner. So long as that is the case the glamour and the aura of integrity and honor that we all remember from a previous era will remain lost to this generation.
Steven Wright!
I hear Casey Anthony and Amanda Knox will co-host. Opening skit will be a killer!
Guffaw, that made me laugh! Maybe you should consider hosting!
Bring back Billy! Hollywood is great at reboots and sequels. He’ll probably have just as much success.
I gather the Oscar presentations are becoming less relevant to many nowadays since the PC crowd has muscled it’s way into the entertainment industry and smeared it’s ability to stay the hell out of politics…..I have stopped watching for the last several years because absolute idiots get up and rant about issues that have nothing to do with these awards, the stupidity of this thinking has all but lent a curse to entertainers and has now affected attendance in theaters.
Why does everyone think Ricky Gervais is funny? He has a very narrow, very British (obviously) sense of humor. That cartoon fiasco on HBO is but one example. Besides, the Oscars is not the Golden Globes. The ‘hoity toity’ wouldn’t put up with his nonsense at such a prestigious event.
Billy Crystal would do in a pinch, but honestly, he’d probably turn them down now. I don’t think he likes being thought of as second best.
Tina Faye would be a great choice — she’d never do it though.
THIS SUCKS!
