EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures and JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot have hired JD Payne and Patrick McKay to write the script for Boilerplate, based on the Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett graphic novel Boilerplate: History’s Mechanical Marvel. Bad Robot will produce with Outlaw Productions’ Deborah Newmyer. The storyline: the robot Boilerplate was built in the late 19th Century to replace men in battle. The robot is depicted in the Spanish-American War and WWI, and is pictured Zelig-like in meetings with the likes of Teddy Roosevelt and Mark Twain.
The writers got on the map by scripting Goliath, the Old Testament tale that Relativity Media is developing, with speculation that Dwayne Johnson and Taylor Lautner could play the two main characters. They are also scripting Deadliest Warrior, based on the Spike TV series, which Shawn Levy is producing for Paramount. The scribes are repped by UTA and Kaplan/Perrone.

Steampunk bollocks. Never works. Anyone remember Wild Wild West? League of Extraordinary Gentlemen?
Agreed.
Another lame wanker-y project from the world of ‘graphic novels’. Total waste of time and energy.
Oh yeah, remember those golden days of yesteryear when Oscar nominated movies with lackluster titles such as Road to Perdition and A History in Violence were released? What in the world were we thinking?

Road to Perdition and A History of Violence were both concepts that would have worked as books, movies or comics. The trouble with a lot of comics is that the worlds are so esoteric or fantastical, the moment you try to bring them to life in a movie, they smack of trite hokiness. Simply not plausible or with enough substance to make audiences give a shit. In todays market, a comic only has to sell a few thousand copies to be considered a success, a movie has to resonate with millions. And steampunk has traditionally proven to be a loser for the movie business.
Third time’s a charm, right? The trouble with the other steampunk movies was a script that sucked. Payne/McKay can actually write.
Whoa whoa whoa. An old testament bible story possibly starring The Rock and Taylor Lautner?
No sin against God is unforgivable, but this has to be close.
Congrats to Anina & Paul! Good fortune couldn’t have happened to a nicer couple in the comic book biz.
I remember Anina way back in the day when she used to edit Harlan Ellison’s Dream Corridor for Dark Horse.

Bluurgh, steampunk nonsense all over again. Unbelievable the amount of undeserving money that gets wasted.
WOW! This could be really amazing. I’ve never heard of this but the blurb with the picture makes the story sound intriguing.
Very strange seeing all the negative comments on here. I can’t believe that if those nay-sayers had read the book (and it’s a book not a graphic novel) they wouldn’t be saying what they are saying. Boilerplate is a fascinating book about history! Paul Guinan may just be a genius and a movie based on his book in JJ Abrams hands, it’s going to be awesome. Don’t doubt me until you read the book!
Thanks for pointing out that our Boilerplate book is NOT a graphic novel. I’ve gotta laugh when people criticize a movie that hasn’t been made yet, based on a book they haven’t even seen, let alone read.
I wouldn’t call either of those good films. Still taking your cues from Entertainment Weekly?
Paul and Anina are alike of an two lovers, built an large robot dog, Yattaman. Very purse amazing. So can it’s be also in comics?
Can someone translate the above comment for me, please?
I’m just thinking how much I enjoyed this book, wanted everyone to read it, and now maybe more will when they see it’s rockin’ enough for a movie. Plus the screenwriters are really, really good. Nobody knows HOW good, yet, because nothing they’ve written has been completed. Yet everyone I know who has read one of their scripts/screenplays (including me) can’t stop talking or thinking about it. It’s really hard to wait to see if what everyone is saying is true…that they haven’t seen screenplay genius like this since the days of Spielberg/Lucas. I’m hoping it’s true, and not another M. Night one-night-stand.
This script was great. Patrick and McKay can write like it’s no one’s business. Glad to see some steampunk showing up in Hollywood – someone mentioned the failures of LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN and WILD WILD WEST, but those didn’t fail because of the steampunk genre… they failed because they were bad movies. You can’t declare science fiction dead just because BATTLEFIELD EARTH sucked.
Regarding the awesome Boilerplate: Growing up, I had a black-and-white Zenith TV with fake wood grain on it that you could beat the crap out of if the stabilizer was off while I was watching RIPTIDE and it would fix it. You’d just slap it on the back, whack it on the top a la the Fonz and Viola! Boilerplate is coming people, like it or not, and I have faith in these writers to bring light to an era of history that Paul and Anina have re-imagined in a way no one in Hollywood is doing right now. Case in Point: Sherman and Mr. Peabody FEATURE FILM? Come on! BOILERPLATE has some great legs under him, so give him your support, naysayers.
