ABC’s veteran medical drama Grey’s Anatomy (4.0/10 in adults 18-49) had its fall finale last night. The series ended on a high note – Grey‘s was up 14% from its fast national rating last week. Private Practice (2.9/8), which is heading into its two-hour fall finale next week, was up 12%. On a low note, ABC’s canceled drama Charlie’s Angels (1.1/3) at 8 PM was down a tenth to a series low in its final airing. It dragged down ABC’s nightly average, so the network (2.7/7, 8 million) finished third in both 18-49 and total viewers.
CBS aired a new The Big Bang Theory (5.2/15, 15.7 million) and Rules Of Engagement (3.6/9), followed by drama reruns of Person Of Interest (2.0/5) and The Mentalist (1.9/5). For a third straight week, Big Bang went up in the fast nationals vs. the previous Thursday. The last two times, the comedy posted a new Thursday high in 18-49 and may again tie or surpass its current Thursday best (5.4) when the Live+Same Day ratings are released this afternoon. Big Bang once again topped the night in both 18-49 and total viewers. Rules was down a tenth from last week. CBS (2.8/7, 10.9 million) topped the night in viewers and finished second in 18-49 to Fox.
The second results edition of Fox’s The X Factor (3.3/9) was down 8% from last week. Bones (2.7/7) was down 18% from its season premiere last week. Fox (3.0/8, 9.5 million) still won the night in the demo.
NBC’s returning Thursday series — Community (1.5/4), Parks And Recreation (1.8/5) and The Office (3.0/7) — all fell from last week; Community and Parks And Rec were off by two tenths, The Office by a tenth from their Thursday fast nationals. Rookies Whitney (2.1/5) and Prime Suspect (1.2/3) kept steady at their levels from the past couple of weeks. The CW’s The Vampire Diaries (1.4) was down two tenths but posted its second-most-watched episode of the season. The Secret Circle (0.8) was down a tenth.

This “fall finale” crap on networks is B.S. The season’s a month and a half old! It only works for cable…
why hasn’t GRIMM received a full season order yet? it’s doing better than all NBCs other new shows.
Both Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice were not their fall finale…PP has 2 episodes next week and both will have at least 1 December showing.
Actually, this was the last original episode of Grey’s Anatomy airing this year. The show only returns now on Jan. 5, 2012.
Fall finales? What happens during the rest of sweeps month on Thurs night for ABC. Surprised ABC aired low-rated Charly during sweeps. It dragged down the rest of the line-up.
PP has a two hour episode next week.
X Factor is FAKE and a WORTHLESS talent show. give me THE VOICE now that a REAL talent show. and what gives TALENTLESS Nicole Scherxinger to judge talent when Nicole FAIL to have a successful SOLO career here in the U.S. just look at the Billboard U.S.charts, Nicole is always at the bottom of the charts and always will be. HEY Nicole your music SUCKS!
Yes, The Voice is a better, more successful show. That doesn’t mean X Factor doesn’t have its good points. Lemme guess…you’re working low to mid level marketing gig. Good luck with that.
I think they’re saying “fall finale” b/c for some reason, ABC is not airing another ep till January.
Personally, I think GA will end at the end of this year and they’re writing towards that now….thus the delay.
X- FACTOR is so effin bad. Wow. What a terrible show – and TRULY exactly like American Idol. Just terrible Fox. Shame on you.
This stupidity of fall “finales”has got to stop!! Either film more than 22 episodes,or,start the season later & air the season straight through without a hiatus. I understand special holiday programming stuff will start airing soon, but, even keeping that in mind-year after year, networks are basically stretching 22 episodes over a very long tv season. What this causes:many shows that were doing well before a “hiatus” have less viewers when return because viewers began watching something else while waiting for their favorite show to return. Also some new show that was doing well before a “hiatus” fails when it returns because the “hiatus” killed its’ momentum. Year after year,we the fans have to wait three, four, five weeks between fresh episodes of our favorite shows-WHAT’S UP WITH THAT!?!? They must come up with a better way! Now,I realize that the writing on soap operas isn’t always on par with primetime series’(although with the quality of some network shows-I’m not even sure about that) but, my point is soap operas manage to have a new episode for everyday-including holidays. Basically what I’m saying is this: why can’t primetime series’ have only new episodes for an entire tv season( each season is getting shorter & shorter by the way-it just seems longer because they stretch out 22 episodes from September through May)but, the # of episodes we get remains the same. Some people may say it would be more expensive paying the actors for more episodes, my counterargument would be this: in the long-run,if networks continue to keep us waiting to watch firstrun episodes of our favorite shows-it will turn out more expensive for them, because, a growing number of us will tune out & not watch anymore! Thank you.
Please please please don’t post things that are wrong. There might be people who read them and think they’re true…
Broadcast seasons air 22-24 episodes AT MOST, and have done so for a long time (Friends only aired 22-25 episodes per season). Some shows air less (30 Rock, Lost, etc) because their season starts in January. There are also limited-run series that air over the summer.
Cable channels have switched to year-round programming, and started this 2 season per year stuff – Burn Notice regularly airs half a season over the summer and another in the winter. Clearly, some broadcasters are following suit. Whether it’s good or not remains to be seen.
But, you get 22 episodes a year in a 40 or so week period. Over the Holidays, they air different content. And by the air, THEY AIR RERUNS. Reruns during the network season aren’t exactly a new idea.
So…just stop posting false information and/or your ignorant ideas.
Chris – what you said is absolutely true.
What HAS changed is that the gap between new shows has increased. Until recently, most shows would run originals until mid-December or even a week before Christmas, then go onto a brief hiatus that would last until January, mid-January at most.
Shonda Rhimes is telling people on Twitter that the gap between shows is over two months. That seems odd.
And as with Fox’s “New Girl” et al, we see what happens when a show has a long hiatus of new episodes or any episodes…it suffers in the ratings.
For some reason Rules of Engagement doesn’t get the credit it deserves. Rules had the second highest numbers of the night in terms of total viewers, which it also had last week. Furthermore, a 3.6 demo rating is nothing to scoff at.
Well, here’s to hoping CBS starts treating Rules better, and the powers that be in the TV commentator / review world give it some truly earned props for it’s solid ratings regardless of how often it’s moved around.
Mmmmm….I wonder if you work for the show or Sony……?
How could CBS treat “Rules” any better? They moved it to Thursday at 8:30pm leading out of Big Bang Theory. They initially buried it on Saturday because it isn’t a very good show and it never did that well on Monday. It’s a classic bench player. A decent bench player but a bench player none-the-less.
Why Greys gets such high ratings continues to baffle me. It’s an insult to every single medical professional in the country, even the bad ones.
Though last night’s Grey’s did play like a mini finale, a correction is in order. Private Practice has a double episode next Thursday. All you had do was check your DVR. I have also heard that Grey’s may air one or two in December. Check it out. Grey’s by the way was excellent last night. Superb writing.
Chris, just to clarify a few points I made. You’re right- I know not every show airs 22 episodes & I also know some programs start later on & have a shorter season, but,in a way-I agree . You mentioned “Lost” for example & my point is maybe more shows should do what “Lost &”24″ did:start their seasons later on straight through:no reruns. Yes,I realize not every show can start in January because then:what would air in September? Chris, as a fan it is frustrating waiting so long between firstrun episodes. That is all I was trying to say. Also, yes reruns have always been a part of tv seasons, but, I’m saying they should try spacing them out in a better fashion. What I meant when I mentioned the holidays: I meant I understood a holiday hiatus, because, they usually holiday programs,music,or,whatever-I get that. For the shows which started airing in September-as a fan I wish they would space them out more evenly. I don’t think this would ever happen, but,Chris what do you think of the following idea? I hope noone jumps down my throat, but, here it goes: please here me out- Choose any one of your favorite programs & imagine this: Your program returns each January & airs its’ entire season straight through with no reruns. In September, new show pilots would air and be given a real chance at success-a few months at least & the successful ones would return the following September along with the newest pilots for next year. Chris, look I know because of advertising & the money involved, what I just layed out doesn’t have a chance in hell of actually taking place, but,I just wanted to throw my idea out there. My idea may not be feasible, but, as you & I both know: the networks themselves have come with some ideas that suck bigtime!
