Some of us are not sure what to make of this red band trailer for 21 Jump Street with Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill and Ice Cube in the movification of a long-ago Fox TV series about young cops going undercover in high school. The late ’80s TV show starred Johnny Depp.

At least creepy loner Jonah Hill is believable. Jonah Hill the cop is as bad as it gets. The Olson Twins would make more believable cops.
Hill seems to have gone to the Woody Allen school of acting, where he sat in the front row between Michael Cera and Seth Rogen. Character development is so over-rated. No matter what you’re supposed to be playing, just be yourself!

I have to tell you, I think it’s great — I’m pleasantly surprised… Jump Street was pretty over the top and in your face back in the day… we did some crazy shit along with the serious stuff. The series tone and vibe has been captured — the 25 years later version, anyway. Break a leg.

The problem I have with it is that it doesn’t have the feel of the original. Sure, the original was over-the-top dramatic, but wasn’t that the fun of it? Also, the theme song was the best part about the show – they should have incorporated it into the trailer (unless I missed it…).

The only thing that connects this movie to the show is them joining the Jump Street program.

This trailer was funnier than the whole movie of “The Other Guys”.
I would have liked to have been there the moment Neal Moritz decided to call his company “Original Film.” Was it a earnest moment full of innocent ambition? Did he want to work with our generation’s best and brightest, and really promote courageous storytelling? Or was it a soulless moment of irony and cynicism?
And if you could go back in time to that very moment and show him this trailer, would he slit his own throat, or raise a gin and tonic to himself?

I actually thought the trailer was very funny. This will definitely be a hit. Think about how many trailers have zero laughs in them.
