Shortly after his controversial second turn as host of the Golden Globes last January, Ricky Gervais proclaimed that he shouldn’t and wouldn’t do it again. Now he is doing it, mainly to “shut up all those fucking idiots who said that I’d never be invited back,” he wrote on his blog. And his third stint will “definitely” be his last. Or so he says. Here is Gervais’ post:
So it looks like I’m hosting The Golden Globes for a third and definitely final time.
It was a tough decision to be honest. There were many pros and cons. I loved doing it, but I was worried that I couldn’t improve on last year. I’m in LA anyway as I’m launching Life’s Too Short on HBO. But then I didn’t want the Globes to overshadow the series. I knew some people would be uncomfortable with me being host. (This was a pro by the way.)
What actually tipped the balance and made me say yes, was the fact that it would shut up all those fucking idiots who said that I’d never be invited back. Is that the wrong reason to do something? Ha ha. I think it is.
Now here’s the thing. The outrage I caused was of course, as usual, totally out of proportion to the things I said. I don’t think anyone had any right to be offended but they were. This year I’m going to make sure their offence is completely justified. The best thing about it is writing the gags. I love writing one liners. Particularly when they can’t be used in any other context. It gives them a special weight on the night if you know what I mean.

I will now definitely watch the globes this year.
Next time please let the hard like no one else working Kardumbians host, so that we do not loose all hope, that things can get better.
You weren’t an English major, huh?
I’m all for roasting the rich and famous, but I would prefer if it was done by someone who wasn’t as smug as they come. Gervais is a horrible “comedian,” and I think a lot of people, celebrity attendees and home viewers alike, will ignore the Globes this year because of it.
Flyover country loves the way Gervais tells it like it is – the truth hurts a bit, eh, Hollywood?
Just watch Leno on your DVR that night. He sounds like the kind of toothless, non-smug “roaster” you’re looking for.
I think a lot of the comments about Gervais have missed the mark. He really, truly, doesn’t give a fuck. He’s been more successful than he ever thought possible already and hosting the Golden Globes is just the icing on the cake. It’s precisely this attitude that made the last globes interesting, instead of the usual snorefest. Making it a bit of a Hollywood Roast was inspired, even if unintended, and I look forward to next years show, which I never have before.
You’re so wrong. In addition to being a terrific creator of original television, he’s a desperately frightened animal. Anyone who witnessed his behavior at after-parties last year, at which he roamed from comic to comic seeking compliments and reassurance (and expressing his insecurity), can tell you. Having seen that, I find all his bravado and posturing as the fearless insulter of others more understandable, though still unfortunate.
I think you’re actually missing the obvious point that he DOES give a f#ck hence why he panders and postures the whole “I don’t care” act. It’s act, don’t be fooled. Don’t get me wrong, he’s smart for doing it because he gets this sort of press and attention but he’s fully aware and very calculated…but that’s why he has millions.
Wouldn’t the icing on the cake be NOT having a growing list of film flops on his resume?
I can’t knock the man’s talent for television, but let’s be real: he’s no comedian and he’s certainly no movie star. He gave it a good try, but he needs to stay in his lane.
Commas, Ricky.
Sturdy servants of the language.
You need to use more of them.
British typically use many fewer commas in their prose than Americans. Read a book by a modern British author published in the UK and see what I mean. Commas are often not “have to” punctuation… he’s pretty much grammatically correct in what he wrote.
I’ve heard of infections requiring a three-course treatment of antibiotic therapy to get rid of the bug.
He is such a tit. So full of himself.
I know, isn’t he wonderful? Here’s why I’ll be watching next time:
“This year I’m going to make sure their offence is completely justified.”
F*ckin’ awesome! Can’t wait to watch. The Academy could learn a thing or two from Gervais. Loosen it up and let it flow.
Let’s be real here. The industry needs a shot in the arm whether anyone likes it or not. He is full of himself but funny and will make it a great show. At least the old fuddy duddy HFPA are taking a chance unlike the Academy. Bill Crystal – snooze. What self respecting 25 year old even knows who he is??? Hollywood is growing old and needs to embrace young viewers as they hold the purse strings. Get with the program peeps! The only glamour these days is Twilight – seriously??? That’s what Hollywood has been downgraded to – quite sad.
What self respecting 25 year old DOESN’T know who Billy Crystal is? He’s one of the funniest comedians of his generation, and his work is still funny.
And that’s being said by a 20-something who thinks Gervais is probably the funniest comedians of HIS generation.
Love, love Ricky!
Didn’t you see Johnny Depp with Ricky? Depp understood the dig. Come on! Ricky was absolutely right in every comment. Since when is the Globes important?
Who are the voting members?
Can we get Ricky to host the Oscars and dump the New Bob Hope from hosting again?
Well at least America still manufactures “controversy.”
It’s not too late to make last year his definite “Final Time.” I’m all for inappropriate humor and poking fun at people, but the guy is just not funny. While the stars were busy taking offense to his lame barbs, everyone else should have taken offense to his giggling at his own lame jokes.
He can make a good TV show, but his hosting/stand-up should be kept to himself.
I hope you keep your word Ricky
