The founder of private equity firm Forstmann Little died today of complications from brain cancer. He was 71. Forstmann was best known as a critic of junk bonds who lost the 1989 bidding war with Kohlberg Kravis Roberts for Nabisco chronicled in the book Barbarians At The Gate: The Fall Of RJR Nabisco. But Forstmann also was active in media. He bought Ziff-Davis Publishing in 1994 and turned it around. He also bought IMG, a management firm that handles athletes including Tiger Woods and Roger Federer. Other media investments included Citadel Broadcasting and Topps. In 1995 the National Academy of Popular Music gave him its Patron of the Arts Award. Media execs flocked to Forstmann’s annual conferences in Aspen, which attracted world leaders including Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela, and late Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. The billionaire also was well known for his personal life which included relationships with Princess Diana and Top Chef star Padma Lakshmi. The end of his life was marred by a power struggle with longtime friend Michael Ovitz over IMG.

One of the finest men I’ve known. A great businessman, athlete and true gentlemen with a wonderful sense of humor and a deep love of life, competition and the virtues of excellence. A citizen to the world and a lover of the arts-he will be sorely missed.
RIP Ted.
If only we had listened to your criticism of junk bonds and debt, we probably would have been better off.
A giant among gentlemen. Ovitz, take notes. RIP Ted.
That scraping sound you hear over at IMG is Ovit’s sharpening his claws.
rest in peace, teddy. a great man, truly brilliant businessman, an inspiring mentor, and one of the real mensches in this or any other industry. he leaves a lasting legacy in many, many areas – most significantly education, philanthropy and kindness.
RIP Teddy…the guy embraced life, jumped into the fray on every front; made a fortune and had fun doing it. It’s a bitch that even a single moment of his final hours were spent dealing with a backstabbing douchebag like Ovitz (take note Greg O’Hara…we’re watching your starfucking ass). Rest well…
sad how you’ve turned this into just another excuse to bash Ovitz.
Ovitz is such a disgusting despicable prick. He is a nobody’s friend. Old ways die hard.
