Showtime’s David Nevins: Seasons 7 And 8 Of ‘Dexter’ Will Be “Likely” Show’s Last
After lengthy negotiations, Showtime has closed a new two-year deal with Dexter star Michael C. Hall. With him locked in, the pay cable network has renewed its flagship series for 2 more seasons, bringing the its run to 8 seasons. Each season will consist of 12 episodes, with production on Season 7 slated to begin next year in Los Angeles. “Dexter‘s enormous success is a real tribute to the great achievements of its cast, producers, and the powerhouse performance of Michael C. Hall,” Showtime entertainment president David Nevins said. “The series is bigger than it’s ever been in its sixth season, both in terms of audience and its impact on the cultural landscape.” This past week, Dexter inched up again in the ratings for a fifth consecutive week, delivering 1.99 million viewers (2.61 million for the night), the show’s largest audience since the sixth season premiere. Season-to-date, the dark drama averages 5.12 million viewers per week on all platforms. “On behalf of the entire Dexter family, we relish the invitation to delve ever deeper into Dexter’s world,” said Hall, who is executive producing the show with John Goldwyn, Sara Colleton, Scott Buck and Manny Coto. The deal with Hall comes after some tense moments last month when Hall and Showtime reached an impasse after the two sides couldn’t bridge a $4 million gap in proposed salary, with Showtime offering $20 million for two more seasons and Hall’s team asking for $24 million. That gap has now been bridged.

Showtime will drag this one to 15 seasons
we can only hope
I’d really love to see the show end on a high note after this season and not dragged through lame plotlines for another 2 seasons. But, money has to be made of course.
Or hey, You don’t have to watch the new seasons!
problem solved.
God, how i love Michael C. Hall!
How can this show last two more seasons? The current season is meh. I’m still pissed at Showtime for cancelling Brotherhood.
Brotherhood, really? It was a great show, but that was 2008. You’ve got to let go.
Great news! Michael C. Hall rules and Dexter is the best show on TV!
They should also respect the cast around MCH who are constantly nominated by Sag, Globes, SAG. They are strong.
Dear Showrunners:
Please put Dexter in some DANGER! This season has really suffered because Dexter isn’t being hunted, chased or sought out by anyone. There is no tension whatsoever.
the show is AWFUL this year! dexter’s totally out of character – acting like an ME instead of a blood analyst – his “voice” is gone and the villains this year SUCK. completely not scary. has dexter been in danger of getting caught ONCE? nope…
and the impending “twist” is so predictable it’s pathetic.
people hated last year, but this season is far, far worse…
You mean the “twist” involving Colin Hanks, right?
Is it even really a twist if everyone has figured it out already? I agree that this season’s villains are the worst yet, and there’s been little to no tension involved. Colin Hanks is just not a very good actor.
Colin Hanks is definitely of the Keanu-Reeves-less-is-more-but-actually-boring school of acting — as boring as he was on Mad Men. I’ve been disappointed with this season of Dexter.
yes, that twist.
It pains me to agree with you, because I love this show, but creatively the show has been in a downward spiral since the brilliant Trinity killer arc. Characters should evolve, but Dexter has transformed, and not for the better. There’s no jeopardy this season, and that is a huge mistake by the writers. I don’t know where the story is going this season, but I hope they stop the bleeding (ha ha) and get back on track.
Best show on television. Period. Love this season, loved last season, loved the 4 seasons prior. If you don’t like it, don’t watch for pete’s sake.
The last article said that he left 20 MILLION DOLLARS ON THE TABLE. That’s something that most educated people in this industry thought was outrageous.
Now that the deal is closed, where is the follow up??? Shitty reporting here.
I must agree with previous posters that this season of Dexter is a snore. Although unlike others I loved the barrel girl season which was incredibly well done and scary as hell. Don’t like the villains this year and the Mos Def story arc was pointless. Hopefully next two seasons will be better. Hanging in there…
This season makes sense to me, and I like it quite a bit. I also think Dexter’s arc still makes sense. Each season deals with one basic theme, and this season is no different.
Mos Def’s story arc was not pointless. This whole season is about Dexter grappling with the concept of God. Mos Def is maybe the single most important character of the season thus far.
Last season, however, was a fucking bust. The most heartbreaking missed opportunity since Lost introduced the Man in Black.
Everyone’s trippin, season 6 is much better than the 5th. DDK and Travis are dark as hell. I had a hunch that they were the same. but we’ll see. I’m excited for the extension as should EVERY FAN. I just hope the show runners keep bringing out more darkness from within like the run in with Brian. Lets not forget that Harrison is still growing and Serial Killer’s usually die bloody as hell. Im looking forward to see how it all comes to an end.
I think Dexter being moved from Florida,to Los Angeles CA, I really hated, now their sweat is fake and not from true Florida Humidity. Then changing his character from a Healthnut Hunk exercising and eating and planning out his next kill, to a insecure bumbling forgetful lousy Dad, has really screwed up the show !! I have been an avid fan from the 1st episode of the first Season and they are getting to far away from who Dexter really is . Dragging out the show with Collin Hanks was way to much and to top it off he even was able to take down the lifelong Hunk Serial Killer, come on be real !!!!! And then there was John down on his luck Lithgow, who sucked my a@# … The first Season was so frigging amazing and so well done well at least the first 5 episodes until they brought Paul into it and ruined the episodes that he was in once again taking away from Dexter our beloved Serial Killer ! The Show should be about Dexter the blood Spatter Analyst Serial Killer who kills because he NEEDS to and should Kill a Bad Guy in every episode!!!! The fans deserve that if nothing else the “Kill” you know by Dexter the Serial Killer !!. Michael C hall is one of the Best Actors in the Business and he should be in the Limelight the majority of the time , I’m not sure if it was his decision to add all these other people into the cast of Dexter , but it turned more into a Soap Opera. Come On do right by us and , take a look at the very beginning of the First Season and bring back Dexter. Popping Cherry was one of my favorites. And bringing back his brother was Great except to short lived ! We Love Ya Dexter please find the killer in you and get back to feeding the Sharks if you know what I mean …GO DEX OUT FOR A KILL …………………………………………..
