Minutes after Showtime announced a new two-year deal with Dexter star Michael C. Hall and a two-year pickup for the show, I spoke with Showtime entertainment president David Nevins about the deal and the future of Dexter, the network’s highest-rated series. Last month, I reported about a breakdown in the negotiations between Hall and Showtime over a $4 million gap between the $24 million Hall’s reps were reportedly seeking and the $20 million Showtime was offering for a new 2-year contract. (Hall’s existing one is up at the end of the current Season 6.) Today, Nevins declined to discuss financials but stressed that they didn’t drive the deal-making. “It’s been a pretty simple negotiation, and Michael C. Hall has been
incredibly gentlemanly throughout the whole process,” Nevins said. “The biggest question was: what is the trajectory of the show creatively? And after speaking with (executive producers) John Goldwyn, Sara Colleton and Scott Buck, it became pretty clear that there was a very clear 3-year trajectory. Once we established that, this became a very simple negotiation, which went down pretty quickly.” The 3-year trajectory includes the current sixth season and the upcoming Seasons 7 and 8. Does it mean that Dexter will end after eight seasons? “I’m not going to say with absolute certainty that this is the end, but that is the likely scenario, that the series is moving towards a definite end,” Nevins said.
Also key in the negotiation was working out the show’s filming schedule to accommodate Hall and Showtime. Given the success the pairing of Dexter and rookie Homeland has had, the network is looking to keep the 2 series on compatible schedules so they can continue to air together, which has been accomplished. “The pairing of Dexter and Homeland has made for a vety powerful Sunday, and our plan is to likely keep them together,” Nevins said. “Clearly those shows cement our schedule on Sunday for the next several years.” Both Dexter and Homeland have been growing in the ratings for the past five consecutive weeks. “It’s remarkable how Dexter continues to be on a steady upward trajectory in its sixth season,” Nevins said.

I look forward to Sunday night TV and Dexter and Homeland are just two of the reason why (The Walking Dead being the third).
The best Sunday night combo in cable!
love the show and the music. tasty
Agreed.
Although, I would add that WD is treading a fine line. Last weeks episode was finally good again. The previous two episodes were BORING except for the last two minutes. They need to strike more of a balance between the talking and action. Way too much talking lately.
In the episode where Mom and Dad are at Carl’s bedside while he’s passed out there was that speech about the deer. It was so bad, I laughed out loud.
“And, Carl looked at the deer, and the deer looked at Carl, and then the deer looked at Carl again, and Carl looked at the deer. He talked about the deer. He talked about the deer” Or something like that. They said “deer” 18 times. It was as if they were trying to use up screen time because there wasn’t enough story.
Dexter–awesome! They should do something with EJO’s character already though.
Seasons 1-4 I found thrilling on all levels. I thought season 5 to be by far the weakest writing of the series. Hope it has improved for season 6 (I lag behind a season on DVD), otherwise, I’m getting less enthusiastic.
Season 6 is definitely better than season 5, but in my opinion not as engaging as 1-4. Definitely worth catching up on though
I’m glad that they are finally setting a timeline because at this point the series is spinning its wheels until someone finally starts to suspect that Dexter is a serial killer (probably Deb). Bringing on a big name guest star as the season’s villain that Dexter has to bring down has been hit or miss, with this season’s pairing of Olmos and Colin Hanks being the weakest yet.
Dexter has been nothing special the last two seasons and this season so far has been just plain silly. The writing for Dexter, Weeds, and The C Word recently has been over the top laughable in a very bad way. And please, don’t get started on the ludacrous United States of Tara.
the c-word ? did you just prove you don’t watch the show ? it has a new title.
Good news and we hope that DEXTER goes out with a bang. Like Matthew Weiner said about his proposed ending of MAD MEN, “don’t let the show end in a fart” (THE SOPRANOS anyone?).
DEXTER may not be for everyone, but to me it is consistently one of the best shows on television – cast, character development, plots, etc. It would be appropriate to allow the show to reach some kind of conclusion on its own terms, whatever that may be.
(By the way, Nellie, many of your posts contain simple typos -see “vety” above, and “guest sports” in the CSI article. A little advice – hit F7 before posting.)
sounds about right to me…Dexter & Homeland…excellent this year
can a serial killer have a character arc? maybe not. the show seems like more of the same with dexter stuck on a revolving door. the arcs on breaking bad are excellent – they feel authentic and are fulfilling to watch. maybe for dexter – a brain tumor that causes him to assign “bad” qualities to only kinda bad people and organizations – like the boy scouts. or apple in-store sales people. heh heh heh.
Dexter is barely watchable now. I get the decision. Showtime’s only other high-profile drama is Homeland, and it can’t just depend on that considering it’s only halfway through its first season. They need the ratings and the media attention that Dexter still gives them, but for the sake of the show’s reputation there is no way it should continue for eight seasons. Now it’ll be remembered as a long-running drama that only had a couple of good seasons.
Dexter has consistently been one of the bests shows on cable year after year. I simply cannot wait for Sept. to come around again to get my fix.
I LOVE this show, I wish it could go on forever, although I know that’s unlikely. I’d love to get to 10 seasons though…
@Emily, I totally agree. I would love ten seasons at the maximum. then we could have DEXTER’s 100th episode! Wow, that would be such an accomplishment. If they do these next to seasons right, I don’t see why they can’t do another 2 after and end it with a big bang with an even 10. I love this show so much. It is my favorite of all shows. I have watched all the seasons at least twice (not including 6) So, I hope 8 isn’t the last. I really hope it isn’t. WE LOVE DEXTER!
Come on! This is unbelievebable! It disappoints me to see Dexter end on season 8!! Please, keep making more seasons! at least end it on season 10! PLEASE!
I think dexter is the best tv show and would love to see it go futher than an 8th season look how many lame shows have been draged out but you get one thats has a very good turn out and greats ratings and they are gonna cut it off after the 8th season come on people get real pure insanity.
Here’s hoping that the writers get inspired enough that will enable them to make a good argument for a 9th and 10th season – and that they pull through as they have the past 6 seasons.
Well, Dexter is the ONLY reason that we pay for Showtime so I guess when Dexter ends so does our subscription for Showtime. Showtime will lose a customer and we will save some money although I would prefer to see Dexter forever. It is our weekly routine.
Much love to Michael & Jennifer and the rest of the cast!
What an incredible storyline and I am not looking forward to the last episode of Dexter. We love the show….. Kudos all around
