EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures Classics has been set to release The Raid, the Gareth Evans-directed martial arts film that won the Midnight Madness Award at the recent Toronto Film Festival. It is also rumored to be en route to the upcoming Sundance Film Festival, by which time it will have a new soundtrack from Mike Shionda of Linkin Park, with Joseph Trapanese. For SPC, the film is a departure from its current awards contenders that include Take Shelter and Midnight In Paris, but the film was certainly one of the most buzzed-about films at Toronto for the industry crowd. It would have been a bidding battle at the festival, but the domestic distribution rights had been smartly collared by the Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group back at Cannes, a buy made on partial footage that also gave Sony the inside track on remake rights. The remake was placed at Screen Gems, and now SPC’s Tom Bernard and Michael Barker will release the original next spring. As for Evans, he’s going back to Jakarta to shoot a larger-scale film that incorporates the actors and storylines from The Raid. Here’s the trailer:

Awesome action movie, that proves once again Korea is outdoing Hollywood in epic, quality action films. But seriously, Linkin Park for the soundtrack? Thud. IQ’s drop suddenly.
My bad. Indonesia.
last time i checked jakarta was not in korea
I gotta say, I’m actually looking forward to this. The trailer reminds me of the mindless actions films we used to get in the 80′s and early 90′s. Violence, action, and more violence.
Wow. Intense. Stunts and action look amazing. But yeah, Linkin Park? Kill me. Step up guys. It’s the year 2012 nearly. L.P. is so last decade and not even good then. You can do way better than that.
This is Indonesian martial art movie. It’s bring Pencak Silat (Indonesian Martial Art) originally. & very brutal martial art. The original title is “Serbuan Maut”. It will be most shocking action cinema.
there’s another teaser for outside us with original music score. here the url http://vimeo.com/27611859
To be fair to Linkin Park -and I’m by no means a fan- they do have an ear for mass appeal and solid studio production. As long as they keep rap/rock out of it, they’ll probably do a pretty decent job.
not linkin park but only mike shinoda with joe trapanese who made music score for tron legacy. that music score is only for US release. You can compare with the original score in this second trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1COoON-DX2Q
Thanks for sharing that trailer. I like the original much more though. In my opinion, all the in-your-face rock guitar takes away from the build up and action. And didn’t Daft Punk do the score for Tron?
you can get the info about joseph trapanese from here http://www.joecomposer.com/
Looks absolutely stupid. I’ve seen better movies that Hollywood completely ignored that were foreign. For them to love this film just raises a lot of red flags for me.
See, the key thing to take away is that you HAVEN’T seen it. Your opinion is based out of pure ignorance.
THE RAID was one of 27 films I saw at this year’s festival and it was one of my favourites, topping other critically acclaimed titles like SHAME and MONEYBALL.
Sounds like you have no mind of your own. I wonder what you really would have thought if you had to watch these movies in isolation?
Hmm, he watched 27 films (in their entirety, not just the trailer) and decided the Raid was one of the best. Yep, clearly he’s the one with judgement problems. Also, try to look up a bad review of it from TIFF, you won’t find one. But then I guess all those critics are mindless drones too.
I’ve seen the Raid myself as well. You’ll be eating your words in a few months when you finally see it after all of your buddies tell you how awesome it is.
Some unbelievably interesting camera work, fight sequences which look great, and creative edits in putting that trailer together. Really exciting to watch, visceral—NO idea if there’s a story there…
this looks AWESOME!
Seriously? Apart from the guy hitting the fire escape on his way falling out the window, there is not a single scene in this I haven’t seen a few hundred times before. Do you guys all live under a rock?
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!
I know. I smell another “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” con job.
You probably greenlit that Snow White disaster.
Play on player. I’ll see it. Love Shinoda too.
To all who comment based on the trailer,
I have watched the movie in local festival in Indonesia and the trailer wasn’t even 10% of what was in the full movie.
Let’s said that The Raid has a lot of surprise and you haven’t been spoiled yet by the trailer.
just wait and watch it! i’ve already watch The Raid and all i can say…this movie was F***IN’ BADASS! it brings martial art into a higher level! trust me!
seems like the we’re gonna see a global rollout for this one. sources: screening date is now TENTATIVELY APRIL 7, Indonesia and the rest of the world (incl. US). Mark the date! the hype has caused push-back for screening date in Indonesia (initially set for January 2012).
I need people to hold me down as I jump up and down in excitement. Finally The Raid will make it here! I’ve been wanting to see it ever since my friend showed me the trailer earlier this year. Great move Sony, it’s an awesome movie.
awesome!!!!The premise is extremely simple. A SWAT team is embarking upon a raid of an apartment complex run by the evil Tama (Ray Sahetapy). Rama (Iko Uwais) is just one of the members of the tactical team sent in to take Tama down. He leaves his pregnant wife at in bed and tells his father that he will do whatever he can to bring home his brother, who just happens to be under Tama’s rule, along with Tama’s right hand men, Andi (Doni Alamsyah) and Mad Dog (Yayan Ruhian). Once the SWAT team’s cover is blown, it becomes a fight to the death, floor by floor, to take down Tama and his band of badass henchmen at any cost.
While the story itself is as simplistic as it sounds, what Evans has managed to bring us is the most gloriously brutal and entertaining action film to be seen in years. There is some amazing stunt and camera work on display here. With a mix of Die Hard, Old Boy, Unleashed, and A Better Tomorrow, this film is a huge leap forward from Evan’s last film Merantau. Not to knock that film down, but here we have a guns blazing, fist-flying, stunt-filled action spectacular. If there was any movie I’d tell you to go see first, if I know you love a good action film, it would definitely be The Raid.
the trailer wasn’t even 5% of what was in the full movie.
