EXCLUSIVE: Sony moved Roland Emmerich’s Singularity from May 17th, 2013, to Nov 1, 2013. So now Paramount is grabbing that primo pre-Memorial Weekend date of May 17, 2013 for its much anticipated writer/director J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek sequel (which is really No. 12 among the Captain Kirk/Mr Spock star fleet movies). No title yet. But this one is being co-written by Abrams with Lost‘s Damon Lindelof, plus Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci. But JJ is going to be making the movie in 3D. The first of Abram’s rebooted franchise opened May 8, 2009 for a $79M weekend and ultimate did $258M in North America and $130M international at the box office. The pic is being produced by all those writers and Bryan Burk, who is JJ’s Bad Robot production partner. It is anticipated that David Ellison’s Skydance will be co-financing the film with Paramount. All key cast members will be returning, like Chris Pine and Zach Quinto and Zoe Saldana.
Paramount took a real risk rebooting what many thoiught was a tired franchise played out but the studio wound up with another potent franchise. That’s because Abrams’ reboot widened well beyond Star Trek‘s rabid but older fanbase and attracted a new and younger audience. (Paramount marketed the movie as “not your father’s Star Trek”.) And the critical reviews were 96% positive. The goal of the new pic was to finally attract more filmgoers overseas since the franchise had never done $100M international before.
As for the sequel, Abrams had to finish Super 8 so there was no way he could make the June 29, 2012 release date that Paramount initially had carved out for the film. (The studio gave that slot to its other sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation.) Abrams had been hunkering down with writers Orci, Kurtzman, and Lindelof to work on the Star Trek script. The studio exercised its option on the cast and they would be ready when Abrams was.

Paramount should provide the 3D Glasses for this! We don’t need to “buy” any “stinking glasses”….(apologies to “The Treasure of Sierra Madre”).
Can I have 3-d glasses that look like a visor?
Rebooting Star Trek was a risk? Maybe, but not a very big one.
I was really disappointed in SUPER 8…..the first 20 minutes it seemed like it was going to be very cool and then it just went down hill fast with some of the most ridiculous coincidences and cliches ever! and tipping your hat to Close Encounters and E.T. just made it all the more weak.
i was all for the retro time period and feel but come on…let someone edit your story or at least listen to others ’cause it’s just hard to believe that people were not seeing the holes….even my 12-year-old nephew thought a lot of it was stupid.
the one good thing was NO 3D!
Does Star Trek not travel? Why only $130 mil overseas for such a big sci-fi release?
Although it does have a global fanbase the Trek films have never ever been big earners abroad. The US has ALWAYS been where the film make the biggest chunk of their earnings.
Even the Abrams films kept the rough 60/40 split running but with higher numbers.
Anyway, re the film – the May date is fine with me, I have the patience to wait 17 months to see it and I’ll decide later whether it will be in 3D or 2D when I do go.
Too early for that call.
Gag, 3D. When will the madness end?
Two Comic-Cons ago, J.J. Abrams told fans that Super 8 wouldn’t be in 3D and he didn’t like the format because it dimmed the picture. Now I’m guessing we’ll start hearing a load of B.S. about how he discovered all the great things 3D can do. Oh well. I’ll be finding a 2D theater.
3D. Yawn.
I know, right? The future is 4D.
Iron Man 3 the first weekend, Pacific Rim the second weekend, Star Trek 2 the third weekend, Fast Six the fourth weekend and The Lone Ranger the fifth weekend.
Looks like they’ve got my money the entire month.
GAH!! So long to wait!
Ridiculous that it will be 4 years between movies. And 3D sucks.
repeat this after me: god bless JJ Abram.
(bar super eight, which was, thematically, disturbingly bad in its conception)
Please, God, let this one have a plot and a point!
And what, pray tell, defines to whiny, hard-to-please people like YOU ‘a plot and a point’?
Why not try to just go with what works for the movies and leave what works for TV and the novels to TV and the novels? Better yet, why not just decide to forgo the new Star Trek at all?
Ah, you must be a person who’ll watch ANYTHING and give away nearly $20 to see tripe and be happy about it. The audience has every right to be happy with what they pay for. Sounds like you’re the one who is whiny attacking a person for an innocent comment.
Wait…. are you saying a plot doesn’t work for Movies but only TV and Novels? …um….. ok
What are you talking about? It did have a plot, were you not paying attention?
It was more like a compilation of Fan Favorite scenes with new actors and special effects mixed in with some scenes from the Star Wars saga. In fact, it would be funny to see if someone could successfully remake the movie with nothing but those two sources of film to work with. I bet they’d make something of almost the same quality.
So, does that mean it’s a “3D-quel”?
Cowboys & Aliens becomes the biggest bomb of the 2011.
Dreamworks drops Kurtzman-Orci’s deal – picks up Kennedy-Marshall.
Kurtzman-Orci’s two drama pilots not picked up by FOX.
Alex Kurtzman’s directorial debut is a disaster. Dreamworks has set no release date for his depressing drama Welcome to People.
JJ Abrams takes over the writing of Stark Trek 2 with Lidelof.
WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO ORCI AND KURTZMAN??
*Hint: They were never any good.
Hint #2 JJ is a hack, too Lindelof is the only real writer in that crew.
they were always hacks.
Why the heck are they waiting FOUR YEARS between pix? They’re wasting all the momentum from the moderately successful launch in 2009.
It’s about damn time. I’ve been waiting almost three years for a sequel.
Can’t wait to see the lens flares in 3-D. Also, a request — perhaps Bones could have more lines than Chekov in the next film?
I’m very excited for this sequel. I wonder if JJ is shooting the film in 3D (Hugo, Gatsby) or converting it (Titanic). Does anyone know?
again in 3D. how many more?!
I am a Star WARS guy…but the JJ version of Star Trek is one of my favorite movies of that year. Bought it the day it came out on dvd and like throwing it on from time to time. Not really keen on the 3D as I hate that medium…but I’ll still see it.
@Peter, That’s because J.J. Trek WAS Star Wars with some Star Trek skin sewn on to it. Tatooine masquerading as Iowa, Death Star, Mos Eisley, all there. There’s even an expanding sword for crying out loud.
Sorry, JJ, but the 3D aspect of the sequel takes away any interest I had in seeing this in the theater. I’ll wait for the disc, on-demand, or premium movie channel airings.
or you can watch it in a 2D form in the cinema you know.
Or you could just see the film without 3D in theaters.
I had my doubts about the first movie, but it was really enjoyable. Too bad this one isn’t due util 2013! Rumor is that they are going to redo the second pilot episode “Where no man has gone before,” where one of Kirk’s old friends from the academy develops god-like powers, while on a mission. THe original episode is very dramatic and character driven, so there’s a lot of potential there. Mind you, this is just the current rumor going around…
• The Orion Syndicate as the villains
• Larger all-star cast as well as many cameos including by William Shatner
• More planets
• Larger space battles with more starships
• Kirk having better fighting skills
• Kirk having several human love interests played by Hollywood’s most beautiful young actresses
• No cut scenes
• The Star Trek theme music from the Insurrection end credits used at the end
I hope they include Lady Gaga in the sequel as a singer with dark connections to the villains. With her futuristic music and style, she would fit right in.
I’d like to see Kirk, Spock and McCoy go undercover to a techno concert of hers on a distant planet which is raided by many henchmen who have a thunderous phaser fight with them.
Good move by JJ. 2013′s shaping up to be good. This’ll come out just three months after Last Stand, a film I personally think could rock. Anyone dare to guess how Arnie’s comeback will fare critically and commercially? I’d love to read the script.
It’s nice to see filmmakers starting to take more control of the this whole meeting the release date phenomenon. Paramount wanted it in 2012, but J.J. said no, he’s too busy with SUPER 8. Not to mention the fact that there was no script only up until a few months ago. I’m not saying that there isn’t a release date to be met, but not having the studio bail on Abrams and hire another team to come in and make the movie just so they could make that 2012 date; good for Paramount.
Kudos to Warner Bros. as well, they’re doing the same with Christopher Nolan and his BATMAN films. Why not just wait another year or so, these filmmakers aren’t going anywhere, nor is the cast.
Could you imagine if FOX had let say Bryan Singer go make SUPERMAN RETURNS and come back a year or two later with X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, instead of rushing to get that piece of crap made, just to make it and meet a release date.
All I’m saying is, is have some studio executives realized that letting the creative take that extra year to get a better quality script and prep can actually get you a better movie, and a better movie is likely to rake in more box office.
