EXCLUSIVE: Chris Pine has left his longtime agents at SDB Partners, who represented him for almost a decade. Pine is yet to land elsewhere, with CAA or WME considered likely destinations. SDB signed Pine when he was a complete unknown. During his nine-year stint with the agency, he got his break with Princess Diaries 2 and rose to fame as the lead in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek. The sequel begins filming in mid-January, and Pine has started re-negotiations to return as Captain Kirk. Pine also starred opposite Denzel Washington in Unstoppable and will next be seen in Welcome To People opposite Olivia Wilde and in This Means War opposite Reese Witherspoon. Additionally, he is attached to play Jack Ryan in Paramount’s planned film reboot. On stage, Pine starred in Farragut North at the Geffen and The Lieutenant Of Inishmore at Taper. While Pine was at SDB, the agency sent him to manager John Carrabino, who now continues to represent him.

A better agency isn’t going to do much better for him. If he is good – executives will come to him at the agency he is at.
He’s making a big mistake leaving SDB. None of the big agencies will care and look out for him like they have.
Says the asst at SDB.
Says the asst at CAA.
Says a casting director who works with SDB and their clients.
Totally agree. Agents at CAA and WME are best at convincing ‘actors’ how valuable they are. It’s their greatest strength.
Agents do not put actors in movies. A director, a good script or a money offer put actors in movies.
Agents can facilitate, but it’s not their call.
Having a good manager is more important – and JC is a good manager.
Chris Pine, like Ryan Gosling, does not need to be at CAA or WME. If anyone wants him, you can call their agent no matter where he is repped or call JC.
This sounds more like a Carrabino back-scratch to one of the agencies.
Pine career is going great… why change? Who’s career would he rather have: CAA’s Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhal, Colin Farrell, Ethan Hawke, Orlando Bloom, Tobey Maguire? Or WME’s Rob Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Justin Timberlake, James Franco?…
Pine is in the biggest movie franchises available…. His career is going great. Why change now?
but CAA’s building is SO COOL.
What’s that place cost per month?
J ohn Carribano sucks. He only tells the actors what they want to hear, while the agents do the work. If he didn’t get in the way, Pine may would have listened to his agents recommendations and been nominated for an Academy award last yr. on 2 different films.
Completely agree. Is it possible the manager turned Pine’s head and wants both himself and his client to be associated with the ‘big boys’?
Sure he did, He’s a creep. He wants the insecure actor to be totally dependent on him. Forget that the Agents started the “UNKNOWN” pimply faced wannabe actor to stardom. The manager told the actor what he wanted to hear, while convincing the dummy the manager knew best. The only thing he knew was how to screw the agents. What’s going on with the misguided actress Carrabino convinced to leave
S D B? Agents beware of the managers you recommend, especially if it’s this one.
So, guess Chris is listening to John? Wow. V bad move. What in the world did Chris think SDB wasn’t doing that another agency with his competition would do for him? I know these people and they were the ones that made him. Made him. Oh well, they’ll just turn around and do it again. They have a great eye for talent. One of the best boutiques in town.
If that’s the case then what’s the point of having agents at all?
It should also be mentioned that SDB represented Michael Shannon for years and helped build his career. They are an awesome boutique agency.
yet another idiot actor making the wrong move.
Who is Michael Shannon?
Are you serious? Recent Academy Award nominee, constant film presence, and featured actor in an HBO tent pole series? Writer boy needs to get out more.
Who ‘WAS” Michael Shannon ? What has he gained leaving S D B? Certainly not an academy award nominated part brought to him while being represented by S D B.
S D B are very loyal agents to their clients, thats why they stay small. Anyone at S D B could be a power at any of the powerhouse agencies if that was their choosing. They happen to be very real people who stay totally devoted to their clients.
Perfect example of the big agency/small agency argument. His small firm agency was able to work big business for him. He still got big feature opportunities without the big agency tag. Glad he stuck with Ro as long as he did. All WME/CAA will do for him is maintain his career, if at all.
Look at Jack Nicholson
He’s been with Sandy Bressler forever
and has multiple Oscars!! Quality not
quantity Chris!!
SDB have done a consistently amazing job for Chris Pine and their other clients. They are some of the best people that I’ve ever worked with. I’m really sorry to hear this, but I’m sure they’ll move on to bigger and better things. As for Pine – he is about to discover just how great they really were.
Excuse me Elizabeth but SDB has done NOTHING for my career AT ALL and I am lucky if I get a return call. I am sorry but you don’t have room to make a statement that they do a “consistently amazing job for their other clients” because THEY DONT!
I’ve represented clients like you. I would suggest to you, leave and find another agency. You must be related to Chris (ungrateful). I guess if they treated you like they did him, you would feel right to leave to.
I know the agents at S D B. They are among the best in town. You are lucky they still keep your name on their list. According to what yo write, they make no money by putting their prestigious name behind yours.
So leave them and see how far you get with someone new! Maybe you’re the problem.
then why don’t you leave or is it because no other agent wants you? sounds like you’re lucky SDB didn’t drop you like other agencies would do
To Ryan Gosling’s credit, he’s still with Ilene Feldman. Good for Gosling, shame on Pine. What wasn’t he getting with SDB that CAA or WME can give him?
So is Chris Hemsworth, so now is Angelina Jolie
LOVE SDB – really sorry to hear this, but their fate doesn’t hinge on any one single client. They have a great list and will continue to do an amazing job.
so everything we hear about is once again proven. So much for loyalty.
They did an amazing job for what i hear was a difficult client who turned down everything
should say
everything we hear about Carabino is true
Apple spellchecked him out
Why are they JUST NOW negotiating a deal for Star Trek 2? Wasn’t he locked into that when he did the first one (and isn’t that part of the reason he hasn’t been able to take many roles since the first one came out?
You always renegotiate the star of a hit franchise film.
Are you even in the business?
His renegotiation should have been handled by now if cameras roll in a few weeks.
Read the article.Obviously you don’t get it. When an actor is an unknown and gets the break of a lifetime the agent has to make a multi picture deal. The raises the agents secuer for the actor on post deals are the basis to renegotiate for better terms on the next film in the original contract.
Most likely that’s why Pine left now , so he can try to screw the agents on the commissions due.
Find this sad…believing his own applause. Who is Chris Pine anyway?? Outside of the industry (if that) who even knows who this kid is??? Now he can be one of many,,…oh I’m sorry…he already is.
that’s the point exactly, he’s no longer a boutique actor… a lot of times it’s not so much about leaving b/c you can’t land gigs (though that does happen) but you also leave b/c of the packaging elements you might get at a bigger agency, or to increase your opportunities with projects involving talent at some of the other agencies.
clearly he wasnt getting the right amount of attention at SBD… brutal.
You must be his manager to say such a thing. Where would Chris be if it weren’t for S D B?
You have no idea what you’re talking about. It’s obvious reading who understands things and who doesn’t. And the SDB client that left (above) was probably lucky to have them in the first place. I bet that person isn’t working anywhere, no matter who her agent is. Would love to see her credits post SDB. ha!
Riding the Pine no moe! Go get cha cheddar son….
A regrettable turn of events that is more common than not. He stayed far longer than many would have. Personally, Chris is a nice kid, but can’t accept him as a movie star. Hope he’s saving his movie money for the lean years ahead.
Maybe now the truth will come out about john carrabino – don’t trust him.
Hope Chris Pines doesn’t end up with Renee Zellweger or Maria Bello’s careers.
APA is salivating since they will sign him in five years
touche’
If your agent doesn’t matter, why do all the biggest stars in the world go to places like CAA?
It’s time for him to make the move. He stayed with SDB for several years longer than most would have. Good for him.
This is sad to hear. I am a literary agent at a large agency, and Chris Pine met with a director client of mine and wanted to do his film. But it was John Carrabino who killed it saying “he didn’t want to do an action film after ‘star trek’”. So John passed on everything offered to Chris and chose to do “Unstoppable” as his follow up. Chris had a terrific moment after “star trek”, and i firmly believe that John squandered many great opportunities. Chris should keep his agents and get a new manager.
It would be sad (and odd, and a poor reflection on the artist) if a manager was making those decisions, and not the performer. I’ve got agents, and managers, and I’ve worked regularly for decades, and no one decides what I do and don’t do other than me. So I’d be surprised if your explanation was accurate.
Don’t be surprised. I think it’s a more common trait than not that artists motors run on insecurity and just plain lack of experience and wisdom when it comes to handling their careers and business. They believe hype from handlers and often turn over decisions to those with self-interest foremost profiting from them. Unfortunately too many decision makers put self-serving needs and agenda over those of the artist.
Agreed.
Managers don’t make decisions – actors do. If an actor is letting his manager make all of them then there’s a co-dependency problem deeper than just a career issue. I’d heard Big John wanted Chris out of SDB years ago but it was Chris who wanted to stay. Hardly saying it was one particular event that created the break – just seems that it was going to go that way if Carabino is drumbeating to get out of there year after year. It’s bound to make an impression sooner or later. John is a decent manager and at the same time seems to hold people in little regard. Better hope that will never boomerang back at you one day.
sad news….loved his loyalty….he is in the incoming phone call business, which is exactly what the big agencies will do for him. They will answer the phone call and collect the check. He is starring in several big studio movies-where is the problem???? It’s a shame.
Look at the jobs he’s gotten (and all the other ones he’s been offered), do YOU think he needed to change agents? Loyalty has gone out the window in this business. And I hear he fired them via email….after 10 years and that kind of success!!!!
He stayed longer than most actors would have, and that’s the truth. I’m sure they are a wonderful boutique agency, but this happens all the time. Agents and managers drop clients as well, when they aren’t making enough money. They stop returning phone calls, or leave an agency without warning clients. Don’t feel sorry for agents. It cuts both ways. This is a business, and he made a business decision.
Exactly. Moving right along!
I can promise you this is 100% John Carrabino’s doing. He’s going to run Chris’ career into the ground before he knows it.
You are so right. Ask Carrabino how many award nomination opportunities he talked Chris out of. If Chris listened to his agents and not the idiot manager (who rode on the coattails of the agents while making making a lot of money giving poor advice) who did nothing but break up a great Hollywood story.
“Star Trek Star Chris Pine”….
If I have to read his name followed behind a movie title just to remember who he is, then I can see why he left.
No unknown has his name before the title of a franchise film. Maybe you should go to film school.
“Star Trek Star Chris Pine”….
If I have to read his name followed behind a movie title just to remember who he is, then I can see why he left.
You must be John Carrabino, to make such an idiotic statement. Guess your just trying to save face for screwing up. If that was the case why didn’t the manager step in and make his money by doing the impossible. Name1 actor who’s name came before the Title of a Franchise film before they were a star.
Most likely, Pine got to where he is today, because his agent told hime “Star Trek” is the movie that would make you a movie star. How soon we forget! 9 yrs was a partnership. He listened to his agents who did their work. He did his job by doing the acting and got 90% of the money less what he gave his leach manager for advise. I’ll bet that advise was to leave a great agency who “Made” him.
Chris is Just another cheap insecure actor looking to screw the people who made his career. How many careers did you, Carrabino make from the beginning?
