Although Starz appears to be off the market for now, CEO Chris Albrecht told investors today that his channel should still be in the catbird seat as digital media grow. But “it will take money” to produce the kind of programming that will set Starz apart from basic cable channels that spend as much as $3M an hour for originals, he said at a conference organized by his parent company Liberty Media. He wants Starz’ shows to have a theatrical feel with iconic, larger than life characters and broad appeal. He assured the audience that he won’t break the bank, though: For example, Spartacus ”is shot completely inside a warehouse in New Zealand….This is the way they make theatrical movies now.” Also Starz has decreased its spending on theatrical films. “That money will be reinvested in original programming.” Starz still plans to run theatricals from its premium TV agreements with Disney, which runs to 2016, and Sony, which goes to 2017.
The biggest new opportunities are in digital media: Starz next year will launch its own streaming platform for its pay TV customers, similar to HBO Go, Albrecht says. That will “get us in front of younger eyeballs and make our product as compelling as anything in the premium space.” Albrecht also is “willing to have the conversations” with companies that want to challenge cable and satellite providers by licensing traditional channels for a streamed service. “Someone will do it,” he says. For now, though, he’s focused on making a subscription VOD deal to replace the one with Netflix that Starz decided not to renew. “We are in very active discussions” with other players, he says. Starz backed away from Netflix because the channel wants to be seen as special—deserving a higher price. Albrecht is counting on someone to launch a premium digital subscription VOD service, and if Starz had stuck with Netflix then “we would have made it almost impossible for anyone else to come into this space.”

This is all well and good, but the problem with Starz is they don’t have a Creative Executive running the channel. Chris Albrecht is big picture; gut instinct etc. He has no instincts for developing ideas and nurturing relationships. Carmi is a nice guy but clueless as to how to develop, let alone what a good idea is. You can make all the streaming, VOD-type deals you want, if your creative is mediocre, you’re dead. And it’s not about spending more money! It’s about finding an exec who’s been on the outside for a while and not so polluted by the day to day and going from one job to another. They are out there, Chris. You just have to decide if your ego can sustain someone else doing for you what you can’t do for yourself.
Solid analysis AC.
Talent and original ideas will help also. Most of orignial programming on starz is reflection of territories better covered by HBO, AMC,and Showtime.
Problem w/ so many of the pay cable shows is that they look cheap. TV looks WAY cheap but when i pay i want it to look like someone spent a few $$$. Sorry y’all but i even thought Boardwalk Empire looks cheap. Back when there were some pretty good looking miniseries and TV movies right up to around the time A&E did their version of Pride & Prejudice. Maybe they have to belt tighten and figure that audiences dont need them to do more than the minimum and maybe thats okay for the free tier but not for subscription.
This is a smoke screen. They have neither the money nor, apparently, the will to actually produce anything. They have big-ticket big-name projects on the runway that they aren’t clearing for takeoff. Anybody who pitches them a project now had better only be in it for the development money because that’s all they’re likely to get out of it. Hollywood beware: this is not a place to take a project.
They really need to get beyond the stink of the name Starz. What is it? It doesn’t resonate anything, or anyplace I want to go to for value.
You need to brand this ASAP!!!
Finally someone is talking about SUBSCRIPTION VOD! If young people aren’t buying cable they will definitely pay Netflix prices for a premium VOD service with full content libraries ala HBO GO for channels like HBO, AMC, maybe Showtime. If Starz gets the quality programming and library it will be a home run.
