EXCLUSIVE: In a match that seems ideal, Tim Burton is in early talks to come aboard Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, the Ransom Riggs novel that 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment acquired last spring. Burton is in talks to develop the book as a potential directing project, and he would be involved in setting a writer to adapt the tale.
It involves Jacob, a 16-year-old whose childhood was filled with stories his grandfather told him about an orphanage for unusual children. Among the residents: a girl who could hold fire in her hands, another whose feet never touched the ground, and twins who communicated without speaking. When his beloved grandfather dies unexpectedly but leaves a message behind for his grandson, the teen heads off to his grandfather’s home on an isolated island off Wales. There he discovers the abandoned remains of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. It is in great disrepair and as Jacob explores its bedrooms and hallways, he can see the children were more than peculiar, they might have been there because they were dangerous. And he can’t shake the feeling they are still lurking around. Peter Chernin, Dylan Clark and Jenno Topping are producing. The WME-repped Burton has wrapped Dark Shadows for Warner Bros with Johnny Depp, and directed the feature-length version of his short film Frankenweenie by Disney. Burton also produced the Timur Bekmambetov-directed Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter for Fox.

A very fun read and you’re right, a great fit for Burton.
Except Tim Burton hasn’t made a good movie in almost 20 years. Too bad such a good book may wind up saddled with him.
‘big fish’ was a good movie but yes in general his movies have sucked.
his top five are:
1. ed wood
2. edward scissor hands
3. beetlejuice
4. pee wee’s big adventure
5. mars attacks!
Big Fish was inspiring, if you apply it to your life as Tim Burton
often does. But please dont forget Nightmare Before Christmas, and Corpse Bride – his animated tales are well done. I think now that he has kids growing up, we will see how he can relate more with a story centering around kids.
@linus o’brien and QD thats bull crap! he makes amazing movies he would do AMAZING! ON THIS MOVIE SO U CAN GO SOMEWHERE!
I’m sorry but they’re right. Any real movie buff can see he’s lost his edge. I’ve been a HUGE burton fan my whole life but things havent been great since the chocolate factory fiasco and it has just gone downhill from there. Dark Shadows was a waste of time. In my opinion, Burton needs to lock himself in a nice dark room and go over his old works. He needs to remember who he is and why his fans love him. Especially before he tackles something as interesting as Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children!
tim burtons films are all amazing and each one unique i think he will do great with such a strange film.:)
Honestly Tim Burton Is The Greatest Director Of All Time. I Have All His Movies. I Think That This Is a Perfect Fit For Him. I Cant Wait To See It.
I’m thrilled that Tim Burton is thinking of making this into a movie. He is my favorite director and he always does a beautiful job that some people just can’t get.
Your right hopefully he dosen’t screw up my favorite book.
Your right hopefully he dosen’t screw up my favorite book!!!
Unfortunately, the point you stopped the story description is also the point where Burton would abandon the well-thought-out story and go off on some personal tangent.
This sounds like an intriquing idea for a film. And definitely preferable to the spate of unimaginative reboots, reimaginings, and film versions of US TV shows from the 1960s/1970s etc.
20 years?! There always has to be at least one opinionated hater posting an ignorant comment… The majority of people & critics would agree that both Sweeney Todd & Big Fish were excellent films…. Whether they were not personally to your liking QD is a different story…
Wales should be represented in every story I feel!
And Helena Bonham Carter snags the lead female role announcement in 3….2….1….
Instead of going Great White on this project and tearing it to shreds (like most of his recent work), he should keep circling and follow another blood trail.
Sounds like a cool story. And Burton could show the dark side just fine.
Starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, with original music score by Danny Elfman.
I know that Tim Burton does “weird” and “unusual” as a film type. And he’s great at it, don’t get me wrong. But just ONCE, I’d like to see him stretch his wings, test himself, and do a completely different kind of movie.
Possibilities:
A buddy cop picture
a tear jerker about a single Dad who gets cancer
A political intrigue thriller
A crazy teen sex comedy
A triumphant sports story (boxer, football team, horse race, etc)
Just once.
Why would we need another single film on any of these subjects from anybody, LA Guy? There are a gazillion of them already. Please, Tim, don’t listen. Pleasepleaseplease!
He doesn’t even have to do any of those. I could give you a hundred other films he could try.
He has amazing directing chops. He really does. I’d just love to see what he could do with a different type of film, other than the same regurgitation of “weird, unusual, gothic” that he’s been doing non-stop for decades.
Take Spielberg, for example. He’s done a lot of different types of films. Kubrick, Coppola, Ron Howard, as well.
I’d say the CLOSEST that Burton has come to venturing outside of his comfort zone, genre-wise, was when he did Planet of the Apes (sci-fi).
As for “Why would we need another single film on any of these subjects from anybody”, you must not work in this industry. Because there are plenty of stories to be told out there. There are plenty of examples of films that fit the “example archetypes” I provided that are completely individual, original, fun films. Although I’m not sure how many “Dad has cancer” movies have been made….
ransom riggs is the new j.k. rowling for sure. better snap up those sequels!
Ransom Riggs, whom I met at a flea market almost a year ago, is such a talent that they NEED to let him draft the script… but yes, Burton seems the logical choice here if Del Toro is busy.
linus o’brien,
number five should be The Nightmare Before Christmas, even though he did not direct it. I think if he created it and produced it it still counts as his movie.
Let me guess – it’ll star Helena Bonham Carter, Johnny Depp, and the kid they used in Burton’s Charlie fiasco. Burton had talent once upon a time, but his reliance on only working with Depp and Carter is his downfall.
Hasn’t made a good movie since Batman Returns. And hasn’t made anything better than cringe inducing dreck since 1998.
Burton’s last great film was Sweeney Todd in 2007. Before that, it was Corpse Bride, and before that was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and before that was Big Fish. Burton has been making plenty of great films. You’re just an idiot.
@QD
Really, almost 20 years? How about Sleepy Hollow, Big Fish, Corpse Bride, and Sweeney Todd?
Granted, you may not like them all, but surely you think one of them is good.
For me, it doesn’t get much better than Big Fish.
Burton – is genius. what ever he will be shot – it’s interesting. i want more and more.
Gothic is what Tim Burton does best, he is know for that and personally I do not believe he should try something different. His fans can connect with his films and artwork because they are so oddly different. He has had amazing movies in the past twenty yrs., Nightmare Before Christmas has 18 yrs and it is still popular even with the new generation, Alice in Wonderland had such a great imagination and was beautiful Tim Burton would do a great job directing such a project, and yes he may always feature Jonny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Danny Elfman but if this system works why mess with it?
The problem with that is sometimes doesn’t. I don’t mind him working with Johnny and Helena but Tim thinks these two can play anything and no other actors are ever considered. I love Johnny and I love Helena, but they are not the be all and end all of cinematic excellence. They were great together in Sweeney Todd, but not in Alice In Wonderland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I think all of them are a good team only when the situation calls for it.
I hope Burton doesn’t get his hands on this one. He USED TO BE brilliant, Ed Wood, Mars Attacks, Big Fish and maybe Sweeney Todd. But they’ve all begun to look alike, complete with a slanted roof with a window in it. Please don’t let Burton do the same-old, same-old with this project.
Not that it matters what my opinion is… but I think Tim Burton would be perfect to do this movie. Why would you want to see him do anything different. It’s like asking an orthopedist to do a facelift or boob job. Not a good idea! Stick with what you are passionate about and good at. I have really enjoyed this book. I have just started reading regularly in the past 4 yrs; and i try to imagine anything that I read as a movie. I would be very excited to see this book on the big screen as with others that i have read.
I can’t wait to see what this books becomes in the hands of Tim Burton. Sure, he hasn’t done marvelous work for a little bit (Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) but I feel that those stories weren’t the dark and dank the Burton is used to working with. With those stories, he twisted to the story to make it seem weird, twisted and dark. This book IS dark and twisted. I’ve only read the first couple of chapters so far, but it already something that seems like it came right out of Burton’s head.
The author actually went to middle and high school where I go now, and he came to talk to us recently. He was a very interesting person, and he went to film school, so don’t worry about Tim Burton straying too far off the path. This author wants in.
And Tim Burton is a film genius. Don’t insult him, and don’t waste your life insulting other people. It’s really a horrid pastime.
Tim Burton would bring a dark feeling to this book that I felt was just hinted at, and I am personally excited to see if he does anything with it. Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp are amazing actors who are extremely versatile, and they are among my favorites. Hopefully they’ll cast someone as gripping to play Jacob so that, if the two actors end up being cast, they don’t steal the movie.
This book was amazing, and the author was interesting, if a little prone to green-frogging. I was psyched when I heard Tim Burton may be directing it, and I hope this movie does get made into something worthwhile.
You forgot Beetlejuice, all three batman, nightmare before Christmas, corpse bride
I absolutely loved this book! I could read it more than once! I was very excited when I found out Tim Burton would be working with this project, and I cannot wait to see the film. Tim Burton has a personal preferance and unique personality. Why should he change what he likes. I don’t consider it a “comfort zone” I consider it to be perfecting the style he is passionate about. Just because someone’s oppinion of his work is that they don’t like it doesn’t mean its not good. Every one is defferant. I personally think Tim Burton will do a great job and I love Johny Depp. I just hope they pick someone good for Jacob. He is the main character after all and don’t see how Johny Depp could play him sense he is a 16 year old boy. any way SUPER EXCITED!
I actually began reading this book the other day, a late ‘in’ on a Christmas gift. Thus far, I’m really enjoying the story-one of the more worth-while reads, in my opinion… I’m going to give Burton the benefit of doubt, against my better judgement. I feel he’s been rushing his more recent films, and yes, the cast is more predictable than a ‘coming of age’ flick from the eighties. I feel that like most in the film industry, he’s lost the touch that made him signature. A fancy name on a package doesn’t ensure a good product. I just hope he doesn’t ‘hollywood’ the shit out of it-no rushed CGI and no goddamn 3-D!
Hopefully, if he does end up directing, he’ll lean a little more towards Big Fish and a little less towards everything else he’s done.
