Rothman’s just pissed he wasn’t allowed more time to do more damage to Prometheus before some footage actually leaked and people were impressed (ala his ‘help’ improving Live Free or Die Hard, Wolverine, X-Men 3…)
Can I please have what he’s on?
He’s like Eugene Levy from For Your Consideration! Hilarious, he’s either quirky or hopped up on something.
you know what, i really like everything Rothman said there. he’s right about the trailer leak being ‘unfair’, the 3D could be used very well by Scott, and then he reiterates what Scott and Fassbender already said. Sounded genuine. Nice short piece of non-fluff movie news there. Thumbs up MTV reporter
I’m with you. I’m sick of the easy cynicism so often expressed here by know-it-all know-nothings who claim that every piece of intellectual property stolen and posted on the web is actually fantastic promotion for the thing being stolen, but that executives (and I am not one) are too imbecilic to realize it. Rothman was asked a question, and expressed his dismay in a reasoned way. Good for him.
As a footnote, the person who leaked the trailer seems to have accidentally recorded their own reflection in the footage. I’m guessing it won’t be long before he’s identified.
For a second, I thought that was Lindsay Lohan in the background.
The Prometheus leak had piqued everyone’s interest in the movie. Trust Tim Rothman not to pick up on that.
The material certainly looks like a prequil to ALIEN and the sets look identical to Giger’s work on the original. The cast doesn’t look so interesting, though. One of the strengths of the original was the casting of unknowns that kept you on your toes. Where did this ‘trailer’ come from?
Yeah Cause Brad Pitt and George Clooney are all over this movie. Besides Charlize Theron there are no real Hollywood stars in this thing. I’m mean there’s Guy Pearce but people today would hardly recognize his name compared to ten years ago. Michael Fassbender, Patrick Wilson, Idris Elba. All really good actors. None of them A List superstars. Elba and Fassbender could be on the cusp though, but yeah to the general public besides Charlize Theron this is a cast of unknowns.
Star power doesn’t matter in a film like this. Like the original Alien or Jaws or Jurassic Park, it’s the film that’s the star.
Why all this strenuous denial of it being a prequel? How about exploiting the fact that some people will see it as a prequel and some people (i.e. kids who weren’t even around in 1979) will simply see it as a sci fi film. The unwinnable effort to get people to see it a certain way creates negative energy that will hurt the film. Celebrate the debate.
Tom, get one yourself and stop trying to micro-manage the universe. And for goodness sakes, talk in sound-bites, not in graphs.
No one really cares about this rant except you and the folks you torture at Fox on a regular basis.
AND, you can’t polish a turd — Call a spade a spade!
MC
You can’t polish a turd. But you can roll it in glitter.
The casting of this film is my favorite part of it, some of the actors working in are incredibly talented and I’m very excited to see them work together.
Fassbender alone is one of the best and most exciting actors right now.
Who gives a shit… buzz is buzz, and that sounded like good buzz.
People aren’t going to determine if they want to see the film based on a “leaked” clip.
I know a leaked clip of “Chipwrecked” won’t change my mind.

Breeeeaathe Tom. Just take a nice deeeeep breath…and then speak. Before we see the PREQUEL to SCANNERS happen…
Wow. Your brain on drugs.
Nice to see an exec who is passionate about films. Good job Tom.
“If you want to be that literal”? Tom, the leaked trailer had the same title treatment as the original Alien trailer from ’79. The music and cutting style completely aped the original trailer as well. All it was missing was the tagline: “In Space No One Can Hear You Scream… Again”.” Stop trying so hard to distance Prometheus from one of the classic sci-fi masterpieces of all time. Why would any shrewd, smart, film savvy studio exec do that??… oh wait.
I know exactly why there’s confusion in explaining if it’s a prequel or it’s own thing. I’m willing to bet the film takes place in the same universe as the Alien films but is not connected to the stories we’ve seen in any way except for the creatures themselves. This has never been done before and that’s why it’s so hard to market. And that’s a great thing! It’s an original idea (finally). George Lucas should take note and develop new stories for his Star Wars universe…
This is 100% a prequel to Alien. The only reason he says it is not is because he wants to preserve the ‘reveal’ at the end of the movie.
The “profound” and “original” ideas – if they’re the ones contained in the leaked synopsis – are trite, contrived, and derivative. Way to torpedo your own classic, Scott. This is getting to be a habit (Blade Runner). I know this guy named George out in Marin County you should look up…you appear to have a lot in common, lol.
