If Summit Entertainment is actually serious about a merger or a sale, the company has the benefit of wheeling and dealing while it is at a high-water mark. Summit announced today that The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1, flew past $500 million in global box office in just 12 days. The film is at $508 million today. It was released November 18 and single-handedly has brightened the overall box office picture. The film has generated $223 million domestic, making it one of only 12 films to reach $220 million in 10 days. Creatively, I thought the movie would have been much better had director Bill Condon finished Stephenie Meyer’s Breaking Dawn book in one movie. Let’s face it, the Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson) wedding and subsequent pregnancy were sooooo drawn out, and nothing much happened. But then again, I am not a teenage girl or a Summit executive looking at another half-billion dollar haul once the second installment comes out next November 16.
Said Summit Entertainment’s co-chairmen Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger: “We couldn’t be more pleased with the success of this film and a franchise that the fans have continued to support over the past several years. Thank you to all involved with the films from the actors, filmmakers and Stephenie Meyer to the most important group of all, the global fan base that continues to drive a desire for more Edward, Jacob and Bella.”

Would be funny, if it wasn’t so sad.
Couldn’t have said it better
I haven’t seen this movie yet. But from Summit’s press release, it sounds like they must be trying to convince Stephanie Meyer to write another book (or finish the Twilight novellas that she started, but never completed). Unlike other book series that come to a natural conclusion, the Twilight books feel like they still might have additional stories and character exploration left in them.
I don’t see the origional TRIO returning to vist the Twilight, unless their paid 25K or more to do so. In all honesty they’ve become rich and famous due to the franchise and the fanbase for the story.
However grateful they are due to the above, I think their SICK of it and unless the $$$$$ is HUGE….. they won’t return.
hi, had you not used “their” for “they’re” no less than twice, i’d not point it out, but really?…
nobody can take your lame point seriously (even though it’s probably right) if you can’t at least right like an 8 year old. Right.
I am not sure what they were paid initially, probably not much…But I did read last week that they were paid 25mil
for the past three films + a percentage of gross (of course)
I don’t think any of them would bite the hands that set them
off to stardom and if they could process this in a timely
manner, I think they would all do it again…You could not
blame any of them if they wanted to move on to other projects
and not pigeon hole themselves into only doing Twilight projects.
What would be fantastic and make the fans hugely happy is if she’d finish Midnight Sun (and the rest of the series from Edward’s point of view). They could make those films and recast the parts. (and hopefully do a much better job this time.) The fans would still turn up for it.
Yes they would….I would think it possible that the original players would do it again, depending on filming schedules and
how long they drag out the process from book to script to filming.
Not me. The only reason I watched any movie beyond Twilight was for Rob and Kristen, they’re the only two interesting actors in the series. Otherwise I prefer the books.
During the “opening” interviews when BD1 was released, there was a interview with Stephanie Meyer and I do believe she stated that either Midnight Sun was completed or is in the process…Due to fan requests….Whether that would pan out to a movie is another thing…Her Novella on Bree was quite good and wonderful character possibilites there….
Dear Nikki, It was reported that 60% of the people who went to see that movie are over 21 , so what’s up with ‘the teenage girl comment ?
She forgot to mention cougars are a large part of the Twilight fan-base.
Thank you, I’m so sick of the “horny teenage” girl comments that come from almost all critics or commentators of the Twilight books or movies…It is insulting for those of all ages who have enjoyed the books and movies…If they did their homework they would know that Ms Meyers initial intention was NOT to Young Adults but to a more mature reader…It was her publishers who told her they were going to market to Young Adults and if she didn’t like that idea they would not publish her books…It is well documented information. These books and movies are not for everyone, but for those of us young or “old” who have enjoyed them it is insulting.
I hate myself for loving this entirely frivolous series of films. Please, someone save me from my bitterly indulgent self. Viewed BD with equally appalled friends on Saturday and have already bought ticket to see again this Saturday… alone. Just (necro-curious?) me and Dr. Cullen.
That is actually very sad considering they took I story I presume you loved, did a terrible job with it, and you are throwing money at them.
Blah, blah, now we will get more female-focused material.
No.
Now we will get more sub-par, poorly made, female focused material. No thank you.
Trina Darling, please note: I have not read the (grade 4 level) books and so remain unencumbered by any loyalty to the accuracy of their adaptation. I otherwise concur entirely on every point.
Mine is a strictly visual interest which these films rather embarrassingly indulge.
Paging Dr. Cullen…
@dee123 JEALOUS MUCH
Um… No! People are getting $$$$ & good luck to them, i just don’t like it when a book series not fit to line my little sister’s guinea pig cage & the crappy movies based on them make so much. There are so many other books & movies more deserving. They could of improved on Meyer’s crap. They didn’t.
Summit better be serious about a merger with Lionsgate. Asides from the massive success of Twilight and the success of Red, Step Up, and the Hurt Locker, they really don’t have much else.
Considering they are an upstart studio I would say that have a pretty decent portfolio at this point (Knowing also did well). A studio like lionsgate would love to have had there success. I wouldn’t call seven Saw movies to be as successful….
I wish Bill Condon could go back and redo the first three flicks, as well.
Good to see any film do this well. Kudos to Summit
The untapped potential that Hollywood is unaware of, and the public is prejudiced against.
Unfortunately, the investors will never see a dime of that.
Just shows how much expensive crap the world is willing to watch.
in terms of the actors (not the storyline or the quality of the films), the twilight franchise is like the original star wars trilogy and avatar.
it’s done nothing for the actors really. they’re like props in a world created by a larger being (in the case of stars wars, george lucas, in the case of avatar, james cameron and in the case of twilight, stephenie meyer).
just look at the dismal boxoffice numbers for pattinson and taylor lautner. the twilight fans are only interested in them as the characters.
which is great for summit because they can reboot the franchise and hopefully make it better the second time around. because the effects in these films are embarassing to say the least.
Get your facts straight. Both of Pattinson’s non-Twilight movies were profitable. They were small budget dramas and not meant to be blockbusters. Water for Elephants made over 117 million on a 38 million dollar budget. Remember Me made over 56 million on only a 16 million dollar budget. Both movies made triple their buget at the box office and tons more with DVDs that sold very well as well.
“right”? U mean “write”, Shakespeare?
