When Deadline broke the story that Kim Kardashian would star in Tyler Perry’s The Marriage Counselor, an avalanche of comments resulted, some so barbed that Kardashian even chimed in. Perry isn’t immune to the polarized reaction to his casting Kardashian–whose recent marriage ended so suddenly there was barely time for marriage counseling–and he has written about it on his website. Here’s what he says:
I think many of you know that this is a very difficult time of year for me, so what I try to do is make sure that I’m working during this time. All I wanted to do was shoot a great film and try to keep my mind off the holiday grief that I have been experiencing for the past two years. I could not have imagined I’d be getting all these emails about Kim Kardashian. I HAVE SEEN THEM!! YOU HAVE BEEN HEARD!! …LOL. Now, may I say something? Can a brother get a word in?….LOL. Y’all gave me a new movie title, Tyler Perry’s “Diary of a Mad Black Woman Cause You Hired Kim Kardashian, Don’t Make Me Take Off My Earrings and Boycott Yo A**.”…LOL. Some of my ladies are upset. Ok, all jokes aside, can I have my say? Will you at least hear me out?
I was in a Mexican restaurant and the cutest little old woman stopped me and said, “I want to talk to you about KAR-DAT- CHA-NEM.” I said, “Ma’am?” She said, “What is wrong with you putting her in the lead role of your movie?” By the time I explained to her that she was not in the lead role and why I thought she should be in “The Marriage Counselor”, she said, “Oh, I see your point and I can’t wait to see the movie.” So, if you don’t mind, I’d like to share with you what I said to her then maybe you’ll see why I wanted her in the film.
This movie is about a young lady named Judith (Jurnee Smolett), who grew up in the countryside of Virginia in a trailer park. She was raised in the church by her mother Sarah (Ella Joyce). Judith married her childhood sweetheart Brice (Lance Gross) and had the perfect life until she graduated college and went to work in the big city. After college, all she wanted to do was be a marriage counselor, but the only job she could find was working for a matchmaker named Janice (Vanessa Williams). Janice has several employees that work for her, including a woman named Ava (Kim Kardashian). Ava is constantly trying to influence Judith on everything from her shoes to her hair. Judith meets a man at work named Harley (Robbie Jones). Harley challenges everything in her life from her marriage to her husband to her faith. Meanwhile, Brice (Lance Gross), Judith’s husband works at a pharmacy owned by Mrs. Waco (Renee Taylor). Brice has just hired a coworker named Melinda (Brandy), who has some major demons that she is running from. In the end, the choices that both of these young women have made come crashing down on them and their lives will never be the same. I wish I could tell you more, but I don’t want to ruin it for you.
After I finished writing this movie, I sat back and re-read it. Half way through my read, the gravity of what I had written hit me. I knew that this message was not only for my age group, but for all audiences, especially the youth. ESPECIALLY THE YOUTH!! YOUNG FOLKS NEED TO SEE THIS!!! And not just the young people that follow me, but the young people that are following other young people, as well. I wanted a younger cast, that’s why I put Jurnee in the lead and invited Lance Gross, Robbie Jones and Brandy. About two months ago, long before I even heard about Kim’s marriage or divorce, I was trying to finish up the casting. I said to one of my producers, “who else is out there that young people are looking up to?” One of my producers showed me pictures that his daughter had taken of several hundred kids lined up around the corner to get into a Kardashian store. They wanted to meet Kim. I thought, what better person! She literally has millions of young people following her. I thought and still do think, that it would be very responsible of her to be a part of this film. To have the young people that look up to her, see her in a film that is about, what happens in life when you make the wrong choices. Whether you’re aware of it or not, to be honest with you I wasn’t, millions of young people adore her and are following her every move. If one of those young people see this film and find the strength to live a better life and not go through what these characters went through in this movie, then we have all done what I feel I’m being led to do here. I hope you understand. I really do!
And lastly, because I believe that my films speak from the inside out, why wouldn’t Kim Kardashian be invited into a film about Faith, Forgiveness and the healing power of God? What is wrong with that??

Mr. Perry you are so full of sh*t….shame on you for hiring her and actually have her play a character other than herself…there are starving actors out here bro!!!!
Look Tyler, you’re free to cast whoever you want, but when you cast a no-talent-ass-clown like Kim Kardashian over thousands of african-american actresses who have busted their ass at their professions all of their lives, it’s insulting. I understand that you are her gay bff, but I think nepotism and porn have gotten her enough already in life and you should just hire a more deserving person, hey maybe even an actual actress. But then again, after your alex cross movie bombs, it won’t really matter, because then everyone will know that just like Kevin Smith, you can really only do the one thing you’re good at. Kevin is good at sh*t and fart jokes, and you’re good at making movies for african americans that are insulting to any african american with a high school diploma. You’re movies set the cause you claim you are fighting for back about 20-30 years. Well that’s all I got, enjoy your royalty check from that piece of crap star wars movie you were gifted and keep doing what you do best. Making bad movies that the lowest common denominators enjoy. Best of luck to ya!
And it’s your job to find people kids should look up to, not the ones that our media has whored out to make money on. Really, if kids want to be like Kim Kardashian, our world is FUC*ED! Just my opinion, but I think Tyler Perry is an idiot, maybe a lucky one, but an idiot nonetheless. His explanation for casting Kardashian backs up my point quite nicely.
One of my producers showed me pictures that his daughter had taken of several hundred kids lined up around the corner to get into a Kardashian store. They wanted to meet Kim. I thought, what better person! She literally has millions of young people following her.
It’s your film, Mr. Perry. Make it how you wish. But let’s be honest and call it what it is, a marketing tool.
It’s a hard pill to swallow for actors who work hard to earn a living when a role is handed out to a non-actor just for marketing purposes.
But again, it’s your world. We’re just living in it.
Very well said..
Why are you thinking it’s Perry’s fault for casting Kim Kardashian in this film?? Maybe it’s because you all were pissed that she divorced Kris Humphries after ther wedding you couldn’t wait for; yeah, that’s it. And since then, your hatred has since reached to this film. Why won’t you just get it out of your minds? Oh and you wouldn’t be like this if they stay married.
Never apologize. Fuck the public, make your film the way you want.
The public is the where the money comes from, ding dong. He’ll take notice when this heads straight to the dollar DVD bin where it belongs.
Kim Whoredashian is famous because Ray J peed on her, Vivid Video & Ryan Seacrest pimped the result, now Tyler Perry wants to do the same thing.
If any of these reptile had any talent except the aforementioned whoring & pimping, would they need to suck off each other?
Or, considering who’s under discussion, the other way around?
PS: Tyler Perry, stop writing. You can afford to hire what you sorely lack: talent.
And BTW Mr. Perry, I’m one of your defenders on this board even though I’ve never seen your movies… but I gotta tell you… you lost me with this one.
I am embarrassed for Tyler Perry. This letter is juvenile. All he has done is rewarded a woman who became famous off a sex tape. Shame on you Tyler!
What Perry fails to understand about the young people he so wants to reach is that if and when they see worthless human beings like KK become rich and famous for doing NOTHING of ANY worth, those young people too will think if they follow suit, they can be as rich and famous as the KKs and Snookies and all those other idiots. Perry should be encouraging young people to contribute something of value to the world and aspire to great things. Instead, he is reinforcing to them that being a stupid, camera-hogging slut with a zero IQ is what they should emulate. Perry’s letter is a failed attempt to justify something he decided purely for the sake of profit. He wants to make money. Despite all his drivel about doing good in the world, this one casting choice reveals him to be a liar.
Next time, just make a PSA. This move will suck.
Saying people look up to KK is like saying young people looked up to Spencer and Heidi. Young people know who she is, but her 2 minutes are ticking before she ends up like a forgotten Spencer and Heidi and eventually a disdained OJ.
Kardashian is one of the world’s great talents; I am thrilled to see what this union of master artists will produce!
I so love Kim K and I LOOOOOVE Tyler Perry. I am happy that he put
Kim in his movie. Everybody is running their mouth about Kim but
they need to shut up. We all have a right to make our own decisions about our lives. All you stone and boulder throwers, you
might want to check your own closets and crawl in and close the door before someone sees whats in there!!!
Thanks Kimmy, but u forgot YOUR laugh track!
This is a sad country when we idolize people for sleeping around with many many many men. I will boycott Tyler Perry’s movie and encourage other young people to consider role models with values. Also Perry has definitely turned to the dollar and no longer stands for the blacktresses of our community. Boo on Perry. He has lost a fan in me. Add this to your diary of mad black women.
You all are pitiful. Mr. Perry is an exceptional man that is living his dreams. This is HIS movie and whatever he does with it is his business. If you don’t want to support it…..then don’t. He is rich either way……..grow up. We have all made mistakes….so what if Kim kardashian has a sex tape????? I’m pretty sure all of you have done things you’re not proud of………who are you to judge???? Grow up and mind your own business. So sad. Grown men and women acting like children. Aren’t we all adults?
