EXCLUSIVE: Universal has completed a pre-holiday acquisition of a spec script written by The Strangers writer/director Bryan Bertino. The project was acquired to be produced by Blumhouse’s Jason Blum, and Marc Platt and Adam Siegel of Marc Platt Productions. Bertino and his Unbroken Pictures partner Adrienne Biddle will also be producers. Blum and Platt have term deals at the studio. Blum is producer of the Paranormal Activity films.
I heard about the spec when it was circulated under the title Mockingbird, but at present it is untitled. Like Paranormal Activity, the Bertino spec is based on “found footage.” Bertino is not aboard to direct the film. Blumhouse just wrapped the Rob Zombie-directed Lords of Salem, as well as the Ethan Hawke-starrer Sinister for Summit Entertainment and is producing the ABC series The River. UTA made the deal for Bertino.

That’s Universal for ya! Always behind the trend by years. By the time this is made, people won’t see it. Wait, that’s actually true of most Universal movies. The place ruins anything good they have because the execs over there have no clue what they’re doing!
What an incredibly snotty and useless message.
Why would a writer-director sell a spec without himself attached?
One has to wonder…
Have you seen The Strangers? They probably knocked a few zeros off the price until he promised not to direct.
I’ll watch anything Bryan Bertino is attached to. I found The Strangers to be one of the best horror flicks I’ve seen in years. He’s very talented and I hope he continues to make solid films. Good move by Universal
Guy has an incredible ego for a terrible horror writer. Horror writer is an oxymoron, actually. Paradigm to CAA and now to UTA? What’s that about?
Horror writer is an oxymoron? Really? You’re a fool.
Read this script. What a piece! Will be quickly forgotten about.
Apollo 18.
Universal needs to stop buying bad projects. The script wasn’t very good and Bertino, while talented, needs to stop recycling his own movie THE STRANGERS.
Bryan Bertino and talented do not belong together in the same sentence unless there is a “not” in there somewhere.
Bryan is a great writer and I’m happy to hear he has another project lined up… now where the heck is Strangers 2! The script was pretty decent.
i don’t like “the strangers”. good saspiens but nonoriginal. will see what be next.
