Congratz to Donna, Adam and the wonderful people at Universal. Glad that u guys proved it to the naysayers who doubted you. It’s a big step up from last years numbers and I hope 2012 turns out to be another great year for Universal. I look forward to the following films.
Safe House
Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax
American Reunion
Battleship ( yeah I know, but the trailer looked pretty cool)
Snow White & The Huntsman (one of my most anticipated films)
Ted
The Bourne Legacy (really really hope it turns out fine without Damon)
47 Ronin
Les Miserables (not really into musicals, but I’m digging the cast)
I’m sure theirs more, but these were off the top of my head. I know I always write about how u guys should go back to Del Toro’s At the Mountains of Madness in almost every Universal post here on deadline. That film has the potential to be huge at the boxoffice. Don’t be afraid to take a risk when u have great talented people like Guillermo del Toro, James Cameron and Tom Cruise involved even if it ends up with an “R” rating
All sounds very impressive, but what’s the profit margin on that $1 billion. Of those four $100M + grossers, the budgets were:
Hop $63M
Fast Five $125M
Bridesmaids $32.5M
Cowboys vs Aliens $163M
Who knows what the true costs were with P&A?
Dude the only one that didn’t make money was Cowboys & Aliens and that one was splinter between 2 other studios besides just Universal. Plus I think that film will develope a cult following…it wasn’t that bad and people expecting a masterpeice clearly didn’t read the name of the movie
Not saying they didn’t make any money, just wondering what the margin was. And given those were the big hitters, how much did they lose on the turkeys they released this year? And therefore what kind of return are they generating on $1 billion?
Fan makes a good point. Crossing $1b sounds good but that’s just gross. How much of it is actual profit? They’ve released a raft of movies mostly turkeys this year and only three passed $100 million and made profit? Doesn’t sound good to me.
Farzan: I hope Uni are re-imbursing you generously for your posts. On the other hand your post has handily served to show how abysmal their slate for next year is looking with the exception of The Lorax from the reliable Illumination.
I don’t care what people say. I actually enjoyed Fast Five. It’s my second favorite F and F movie.
