In honor of the publication of Saul Bass: A Life In Film & Design, Art of the Title editor-in-chief Ian Albinson assembled this compilation of clips from some of Bass’ memorable designs for movies. In addition, the Museum of Modern Art featured a screening and talk Monday night with the New York premiere of Saul and Elaine Bass’s Academy Award-winning short Why Man Creates (1968), newly preserved by the Academy Film Archive, and a selection of title sequences, commercials and corporate campaigns. Bass created titles for Psycho, The Man with the Golden Arm, Spartacus, The Seven Year Itch, West Side Story, Walk On The Wild Side, Anatomy Of A Murder and many other classics. He also designed posters for numerous Academy Awards ceremonies. Bass, who died November 14, 1996, also created logos for Dixie, Quaker Oats, United Airlines and many other companies. If you’re curious, a section of this site is dedicated to Bass’ movie stills.

Very cool! It takes a retrospective like this to grasp the scope of his genius.
SAUL BASS really was the DEAN of movie titles!
He made the credits come alive on screen starting in the 1950′s.
They became as iconic as the movies themselves. Simplistic designs that became the logos of so many classic films, as seen in the above compilation video.
A Saul Bass title sequence was indeed a work of art… a lost art it seems. We shall not see his like again I fear.
This guy is hands down my biggest influence.
Just an amazing talent. He conjures an entire era.
I don’t miss title sequences in modern movies, but these are works of art; truly wonderful pieces by an amazing visual stylist.
Saul is the master!

As a longtime fan of Saul Bass titles, watching this video only feeds my compulsive desire to see the title sequences in their entirety.
Mr. Bass also directed one feature, a really cool (I think) Sci-Fi film called ‘Phase IV’ which has some really insane footage of ants taking over the world.
If you like trippy 70′s sci-fi, see ‘Phase IV’.
He also claimed to have ‘co-directed’ the famous Psycho shower scene by drawing up the storyboards that would determine the shots used. Though ‘co-directed’ may be a stretch, he no doubt contributed a great deal to what is one of the best scenes in film history. Saul Bass was one of a kind.
i live my life trying to rip off saul bass. i am never successful.
