EXCLUSIVE: Walden Media has acquired rights to turn Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? into a live-action film involving Jennifer Lopez. I’d heard that Walden Media will develop the property as a vehicle for Lopez to play the title character, but Walden Media said at this point, she’s attached to produce only. The hope is to turn the property into National Treasure meets The Thomas Crown Affair. The logline: When the ACME agency’s greatest detective Carmen Sandiego becomes the world’s greatest thief, it’s up to her former partner to follow her clues and track her down. Their cat-and-mouse game leads the partner to confront a greater mystery: Is Carmen really a thief or a hero? The property originated as an educational computer game before it was turned into an animated TV series.
The film will be produced by Lopez and her Nuyorican Productions’ partners Benny Medina and Simon Fields, and Underground Films’ Nick Osbourne, Trevor Engelson and Devin Andre. Walden Media CEO Michael Bostick and SVP Evan Turner are steering the property after it was acquired from Hougton Mifflin. The property fits into Walden Media’s mandate to create properties that challenge kids; Carmen Sandiego is used as a teaching tool in more than half of elementary schools nationwide. The project tried the movie route once before; Disney optioned it in the late 1990s and developed a version for Sandra Bullock, but it never went anywhere.
Lopez, who now works her movie jobs around her music career and judging duties on American Idol, most recently wrapped What To Expect When You’re Expecting with Cameron Diaz for Lionsgate and the Taylor Hackford-directed Parker with Jason Statham for FilmDistrict. She’s repped by UTA.

Not surprised this is being made, but unfortunately the attachment of Jennifer Lopez makes it dead in the water for me. Aside from her lack of acting talent, she’s also too old for the part.
I would rather see Eva Mendez in the role instead of JLO…she blows as an actress…
Jennifer Lopez will do nothing but make this what could be an awesome, nostalgic movie SUCK. Hard. Ugh… Did we not all see how terrible she was on American Idol? What a joke.
I know she is right for this part,
Don’t be hating on Jennifer. She is a great actor and for those who are trying to say she is too old to play the part I don’t think so. Carmen Sandiego is not a 20 year old woman. So get it straight.
good idea ti will be titled
“who the fxxx cares where carmen san diego is”
Jennifer Lopez looks half her age… would be perfect casting and with her new American Idol fanbase sounds like a hit.
According to their announcement, JLo will NOT be playing Carmen.
As some of the comments indicate, one of the major issues here is that Carmen Sandiego’s character varies somewhat depending on the source material. In the computer games and PBS quiz shows, she’s more of a classic villain (though with a degree of Robin Hood swashbuckling), but in the excellent DIC-produced animated series, she becomes considerably more complex. The plot described above noticeably resembles that of one of the animated episodes, which suggests that the producers are at least familiar with that part of the canon.
The real trick to adapting the Carmen Sandiego mythology to film lies in the scripting. The producers also appear to understand (based on their movie references) that the Carmen adventures — cartoon and game alike — are caper stories at heart. The trouble is that they’re caper stories about catching Carmen Sandiego — or at least trying to catch her. Which creates a dilemma: if one spends much of the film in Carmen’s point of view, the opportunity to build suspense is very sharply limited. But if (as in prior incarnations) one spends very little time in Carmen’s point of view, the opportunity to showcase one’s franchise character
is sharply limited.
Personally, as a longtime fan of the animated Carmen, I’d very much like to see this project succeed. And the Thomas Crown shoutout is encouraging, because that story definitely raises some of the same issues I’ve just cited. But I admit to a degree of skepticism; more often than not, this kind of writing challenge isn’t met.
I’ve never seen JLo in a movie before, and most of them have gotten bad reviews from what I can remember. I can’t say I’m optimistic about this choice.
I would much prefer Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett or Catherine Zeta Jones as someone suggested.
I grew up w/ the Carmen Sandiego shows so hopefully this won’t disappoint me!
I would say that Emmanuelle Chriqui would make the perfect Carmen Sandiego. Most of J Lo’s films are geared towards a certain audience and Carmen Sandiego doesn’t really seem like a good fit for her.
Jennifer Lopez would be my absolute last choice as Carmen Sandiego! Anyone who remembers the games, shows, and books will think this will be a total failure. Plus, most people don’t even know who Carmen Sandiego is anyways!
