Lowe’s In Hot Water Over Pulling Ads From TLC’s ‘All-American Muslim’
Local Christian clergy from the Charlotte area today delivered a petition with 200,000 signatures to the Lowe’s headquarters, asking the hardware store giant to reverse its recent decision to pull advertising from the TLC reality series All-American Muslim. Lowe’s executives met with representatives of the clergy and spent an hour discussing the controversy that erupted after the company decided to take its ads off the series depicting the life of ordinary Muslim Americans following a campaign by conservative watchdog the Florida Family Association. However, Lowe’s is not changing its position on staying out of All-American Muslim, the company’s VP marketing Tom Lamb told local newspaper The Charlotte Observer, insisting that the decision to pull the ads was not influenced by the FFA. Lowe’s executives have been taken aback by the magnitude of the backlash to their move that has drawn criticism from politicians and civil rights activists and has prompted demonstrations in front of Lowe’s stores. “We’re surprised at how much happened and how quickly it happened in the context of an advertising decision,” Lamb told the paper. As for today’s petition, “We are concerned that Lowe’s’ decision to pull their advertisements from All-American Muslim based on the demands of an extreme fringe group may fuel divisions in our nation instead of supporting fundamental American values of honesty, community, and interfaith acceptance,” one of the organizers, Rev. Dennis Teall-Fleming, said.

Just “vote” with your dollars, folks. If there’s a Lowe’s in town, there’s probably also a Home Depot.
My sister stopped watching the show when the Muslim lady made her convert husband dump his fifteen year old dog at the pound. Her father couldn’t pray in a house that had dog hair in it, or something equally pathetic.
That kind of manipulative cruelty will end the show faster than losing a major sponsor.
Did you see the next episode? The dog comes back! The Muslim lady says, “I made a mistake, I have to fix this.”
plus, they only got rid of the dog because of her allergies. but her mom told her, “you can’t do that, that’s his baby!” so she decided she’ll deal with the allergies and they’ll just not allow the dog on the carpet. good show!
Too late, my sister stopped watching the show.
What part of “manipulative cruelty” did you not understand?
The Muslim Lady didn’t make a “mistake,” she revealed an inner cruelty, an ugliness.
The audience in my house was horrified, you can’t call that back by retrieving a confused old dog.
Agreed. I’m a lefty, so I support personal freedom and diversity. But it’s funny how “religious freedom” rarely applies to women and is frequently an excuse to enslave. And yes, my fellow liberals look at me like I’m Satan when I say this. Wake up, people.
nonsense
yup.
While people are quick to make judgement, some quick notes:
1. The dog came back.
2. Lowes is still trying to clean up from the crap they stepped in. They are still trying to put on spin about their decision when FFA has flat out been targeting this show since Ep. 1. They kept throwing flames and Lowes cannot say All-American Muslim was controversial because there was no controversy until Lowes pulled their advertising out. We need a better answer.
You’re right, there is always a Home Depot less than two miles away. Thanks, but I’ll stick with Lowes.
It is a pity free speech only applies to organizations with which you approve.
Free speech applies to all… as does bigotry apparently.
They have the right to “speech” and I have the right to not shop there. It’s called consequences. Speech sometimes has them and adults take responsibility.
I will Christmas shop at Lowe’s. The destruction of American Christian values will not be supported with my dollars. I support Tim Tebow. Merry Christmas.
and if there’s a Lowes, you can spend your money there too. Voting with your pocket book swings both ways. Way to go Lowes! There aren’t as many dissenters as they are trying to make you believe. Oh, and Merry Christmas!
Love this! I am now a life-time customer of Lowes.
I already “vote” with my dollars–that’s why I go to Lowe’s and NOT the pro-homosexual/anti-family Home Depot in my town. Besides, what business is it of anyone except the head honcho where they choose to spend their advertising dollars? Do you want someone telling you you “must” shop at a certain store?
Please go back to trolling the Yahoo news boards with your brethren and 18th century views
Yeah. I’ll go to Lowes.
Yeah, that’s why I’m going to Lowe’s
Why do you boycott a business over its private business decision to avoid controversy by ceasing to fund an hour-long Muslim commercial? When did you decide freedom didn’t matter?
“Ceasing” controversy. Lowes decision was to stop advertising for fear that ignorant and bigoted people would stop shopping at their stores.
Believe me, YOU’RE the ignorant one.
…amusing that all the FFA members come out to post on deadline Hollywood. You aren’t fooling anyone.
200,000 signatures, written by 1000 CAIR volunteers. Good on Lowe’s for not supporting TLC’s despicable attempt at mainstreaming a misogynistic, homophobic culture.
…your comment could easily be applied to some Christians. And backed by Christian text. Not all Muslims are misogynistic and homophobic, just like all Christians aren’t. Actually I would argue that that is the point of the show.
And you would criticize those Christians heavily for such politically incorrect stances — just as you criticized the Muslims for… oh wait. You DIDN’T criticize the Muslims for those things, did you?
Funny how all these atheistic left-wing PC types suddenly get the hots for defending religion — when it’s Islam.
I don’t. I think you’re all nuts with serious obsessive compulsive issues. Fearing death makes people do weird shit — disown their gay kids, enshroud women, tithe to pedophiles. Your god must be so proud of you.
No, actually it cant. It is you nutters that are demanding everyone bow to you. I have news for you, everyone HATES liberals. kiss off jack!
If they follow Sharia they are.
You must be referring to Christianity as well, right?
No, he would not be referring to Christians because CAIR would not gather signatures for them, only for Muslims. To CAIR, Christians are infidels and not worthy of any redemption.
Funny, that’s exactly how Christians view people of my faith – and all other faiths. Rapture, anyone?
Now, can we all begin negotiating a pact whereby each and every one of us renounces all established religions, and just pray quietly by ourselves each night?
I don’t know of any Christian group that hangs gay teenagers in the town square.
To equate Christian and Islamic homophobia is dishonest.
No, in Nigeria, Christians burn gays alive.
Two words: Matthew Shepard.
The show is bad melodrama & pushing the happy button tableaux. No ratings. Why waste the ad dollars. Just someone make a better Muslim show.
And they do affiance the girls at 11 (2 of my friends from private school) so that’s not too cool IMHO.
I never shopped at Lowes, now I shop there for all my home improvement needs.
I’m sure your apartment needs home improvement
So, Lowe’s would rather listen to some nutbar fringe religious group who are about as Christian as Judas Iscariot himself than the 200,000 people (potential paying customers, mind you) who asked them to reconsider. Yeah, sounds like a smart business decision. [/sarcasm]
I think Lowe’s is doing pretty well with all the Christians that are boycotting Home Depot because of their support for LGBT groups: http://action.afa.net/item.aspx?id=2147496231
I suppose it equals out. Lowe’s knows their base. Besides, did it ever occur to anyone that the show is tanking in the ratings? Why should Lowe’s be expected to advertise on a worthless (ratings-wise) program when their marketing money could be better spent elsewhere?
I think the PC police should leave Lowe’s alone. Where was this level of outrage when Pepsi pulled ads from “19 Kids and Counting”? I suppose the Muslim apologists are either better organized or more easily outraged. My guess is it’s the latter.
I still plan to shop there.
libs are the “99%” remember? They don’t support BIG “EVIL” corporations, so Lowes loses NOTHING without your invisible dollars.
Have you ever checked out the 30 second CNN clip on YouTube called “Muslims dancing 911″??
THIS is why I have a problem with the Muslim faith. They cheer round the world for an atrocity committed by members of their “Faith” who committed said atrocity for the “Glory of Allah”, and rather than denounce the attack of 9/11, Muslims round the world cheered. CHEERED.
Wake up!
Yes, that’s right, let’s take one Youtube video and let that be representative of almost a billion people.
BTW, you DO realize that Osama Bin Laden and al Qaeda have killed way more Muslims in various terrorist attacks then they did Americans on 9/11 right? So therefore of course, you realize that Muslims hate extremism just as much as anyone else right??
So Lowe’s is more interested in keeping a few fringe members of the FFA as customers rather than the 200,000 petition signers?
Nice marketing strategy, Mr. Lamb, especially considering the economy is in the crapper. Be sure to give yourself a nice bonus this year to compensate yourself for the loss of business.
Hey Dummy…Far more people have signed petitions in favor of Lowes actions!
Thank God for those brave people and for the bravery of Lowes..Useless idiots like yourselves are few Thank GOD!! I will give my buisness to Lowes for now on!
CAIR is no different than the Christian groups that organize protests against the TV networks. Or Jesse Jackson for that matter. None of these interest groups represent the majority of Americans. Their petitions are laughable.
Precisely, Joe. These groups should correctly be called “pressure groups”.
They seek to exert pressure far in excess of their actual relevance by substituting organization for actual memebrship or support.
Like most “reality TV”, this show was lousy. I will reward Lowe’s for their decision by spending extra money there.
Back to the cardboard box hippy! you don’t have any money or a house to spend it on in the first place. If you did you sure would not want to support the BIG EVIL corporation Lowes, or TLC, not to mention the rest of the advertisers. I am sure there is a drum circle starting up, better hurry you don’t want to miss out when they start bangin on that trash can lid.
Actually the job I have at a Fortune 500 company pays quite nicely thank you. And no, I don’t consider “Corporations” evil and have a very nice portfolio of stock holdings of them, which is why I don’t think irritating customers is a good idea.
I’d have a few choice words for you Drudgies but the bible says “Judge not lest ye be judged.” I trust you’ve read it, have you not?
I demand TLC pay me to advertise on the side of my car! If they don’t they’re racist!
This is America. If Lowe’s doesn’t want to run adds on the show that is their call. If “American Muslims” are so mad then they should do more undertand why Americans do not trust/like that religon. Now I sam for freedom of religon but to me when you cover up women it saying you don’t trust your women to be loyal.
Muslims & Christians need to get with the 21st Century. Relion is just a legal brain washing!
Let’s see if they lose enough business and then stick to their “principals.”
I don’t plan to stop shopping there.
I plan to START.
I wonder if it’d still be a free country if Lowe’s had pulled its ads from a show about Christians.
Yep, it would still be free. Of course, most shows about Christians nowadays only exist to show how backward and uptight they are. Funny how the powers that be do everything they can to show Muslims in a positive light while doing the exact opposite to Christians.
Hollywood doesn’t make any. Let’s test your theory and make a few and see how it works out.
Ever hear of “19 Kids and Counting”? No backlash when Pepsi pulled ads from this show, which focuses on a very conservative Christian family and their lifestyle.
Lowes can do whatever it damn pleases. If it chooses not to advertise on a low-rated reality show on TLC, so be it. That doesn’t make Lowes bigoted.
The real bigotry in America is liberals against everybody who doesn’t support their beliefs.
See, Muslims are a protected class in this country. On the other hand, Christians get spit on. So no, no one would care if ads were pulled from a Christian group.
Many women choose – that is, freely, of their own accord – to wear the veil as a sign of respect to God. Please have some respect for them.
… and most of them are forced by their hateful religion, to do it or be beaten, raped, or stoned to death.
Please have respect for them.
Sure. And many women wear it out of fear they’ll be beaten to death if they don’t. It’s mostly about terrorizing and intimidating the female half of the population.
And no, as a woman I won’t “respect” that.
Terrorizing and intimidating the female half of the population?
Sounds like “Operation Rescue” to me….
Yeah they “choose,” alright. If by choosing you mean they live in the 7th century as an alternative to having their heads sawed off.
Puhleez.
When the Islamic world has respect for Western Civilization, the Christian religion, Jews, gay people and so on – well, then I might respect your religion just a bit more. Not until then.
Don’t ask for a tolerance you’re not willing to offer others. Islam today is deeply intolerant. I won’t pretend it deserves respect. And if that’s not PC, screw ‘em.
Uh, and Christians espouse that wives be submissive to their husbands among other things. Christianity has a long and sordid history of being anti-woman…And Christians are hardly the minority in the US. Please. Christians are among the most intolerant – as are most religions…The common denominator? Uh, religion…Look in the mirror and figure it out.
I’m shopping at Lowe’s!!
Me too! I had just bought a $700 stove from Lowe’s a few days before this story broke. Now I’m even happier I bought it there.
Me too! The rest of you goof balls need to get your head’s out of the SAND!
Me too!
Discrimination based on religion is just wrong and I don’t believe in deity worship. Unfortunately their emloyees are the ones that will ultimately pay for the decisions by the nutballs that run the place.
We live in a FREE society! Lowe’s, or any other company, can advertise where they want! I’m sure “American Muslim” can find MANY MORE companies to support their cause, oh I mean “show”…
Hard-line Muslims discriminate against women — and other minorities like Christians, Jews and gays — every day, on the basis of religion. Yoiu don’t seem too exercised about that.
OK, correct me if I’m wrong, but Lowes has not given a specific and long form reason for why they pulled their advertising. If they have, someone please link, because right now everyone is assuming it’s the fringe “christian” group because that’s what the mainstream media reported. There could be many other valid reasons why they did what they did that has nothing to do with a fringe “christian” group…
this is a no-win situation for Lowe’s
they probably want out of the controversy rather than it being discriminatory. Problem is now that they’re pulled out, it looks like discrimination. If they go back to advertising for the show, they’re forcing themselves back in the middle.
Personally, if i were Lowe’s i’d find a way to engage the muslim community without going back to advertising on the show. I wish them luck in figuring out how to do that though.
This is NOT a no win situation for Lowe’s. This is a WIN WIN situation.
They got FREE publicity.
More people will choose the blue over the orange because of this.
Sure they will take some heat but I bet they get a bump in holiday sales and part of it will be attributed to this issue.
Boycotts never work, this whole mess will blow over and that show probably won’t last more than another season. Viewers have a short memory. Lowe’s screwed up, when a company gets involved with a show about a race religion or politics; they are always going to come out on the short end.
Last year it was Target, and the anti gay bill in Minnesota, people were calling for boycotts look where that went. Let the people yap in the end the MAJORITY of the shoppers will still shop where they always have. I shop at both Home Depot and Lowe’s.
Like MTV’s Skins a few months ago all this does is give FREE publicity to a show, in the end Skins was canceled, this show will probably meet the same fate.
I guess people have forgotten that Kayak,. also pulled there ads from the show, now are viewers going to boycott this company as well? People need to use a little common sense. I can remember many years ago some holy roller group tried to boycott Disney, lol that worked so well.
When did this stop being an industry website? Isn’t there a Yahoo chat room all of you belong in?? The story is about cable advertising, not the merits of Islam or the Christian bias of the US. Seriously, get off these comment boards if you don’t have an industry comment to make.
And I work in film, so I have no comment, except that TLC has way too many commercials so one less Lowes commercial can only help.
This comment represents the feelings of everyone I know who reads Deadline as well. If those who want to publicly debate politics or religion would take the time to consider whether a particular site is the proper venue upon which to grind their favorite axe and then apply this insight before doing so, they would be taken (slightly) more seriously.
In theory.
This website has expanded beyond your industry. Believe it or not “commoners” have valid opinions too. Time to get out of L.A. once in awhile and visit the real world and expand your horizons.
“Seriously, get off these comment boards if you don’t have an industry comment to make.”
Oh ok, we’ll get right on that Sarge!
This DOES have to do with the entertainment industry. It runs on the same product as the home improvement industry, the green of money.
Hollywood is out of touch with a good portion of American culture. This is why the movies the industry is putting out are not connecting to the movie going public.
Keep thinking people are stupid, bigoted, racist, ignorant and intolerant then look in the mirror.
And please can someone start to make some decent movies again?
Where have you been? As long as this site has been up, Drudge and other wingnut websites have linked here, hence the easy access granted to their many slope-headed, hunch-backed, inbred readers/trolls.
I’m sorry this is a free country last time I checked and companies reserve the right to pull out of programming at any time if subject matter brings unwanted attention good or bad either way. It is also our same freedom that allows us to not shop at Lowes. So everone shut up, go back to work and stop sniping at every dumb media sensational story, advertisers pull off of shoes all the time,. Get over it. And to the senator who proposed legislation against lowes that is the most absurd thing I’ve ever heard. We are obtaining your name Sir, you’re out on your next electin cycle.
Good for you Lowe’s for sticking to your correct decision.
As for today’s petition, “We are concerned that Lowe’s’ decision to pull their advertisements from All-American Muslim based on the demands of an extreme fringe group may fuel divisions…”
So, every time someone or group is upset, we should immediately cave in because it might “fuel divisions”. There’s never 100% agreement on anything. Therefore making ANY decision “fuels divisions”.
And you know what, asking Lowe’s to go back on it decision, makes ME upset. Therefore, your petition is fueling division….
You are ridiculous. Do you even know any Muslims in America ?
Your comment was the most useless one here. Being a pa is not bring in film, fyi
has anyone thought that maybe they pulled their ads because the viewership of this show is less than the amount of signatures they received in protest? i hadn’t even heard of this show until this controversy started up (in all honesty i don’t even know if it started airing yet or not).
we are going to go shopping @ lowe’s. and we hope that there will be no scum bag terrorist muslims (who all pretend 100% that they are not pro-sharia)-but 100% of cult handbook koran reading evildoers ARE pro-sharia, which means anti judeo-christian..but unless you are educated in these matters AS I AM, the sympathy for the devil will continue by ignorant uneducated sympathizers.
I believe the chairman of Lowes gave the reason for removing advertisement. To paraphrase: “I saw the show and I thought it sucked.”
Fair enough.
I’d be willing to bet real money none of the anti-Lowes crowd on here watches this show.
lowe’s will get ALL of my business. Thank you Lowe’s.
I agree w/JJ that this is best discussed as an industry issue. The fact is Lowes was a sponsor of a low rated cable show. Maybe they bowed to pressure from a group or maybe they used that groups complaint as an excuse to back out of a show that is having a hard time pulling in an audience.
I have only seen one episode of the show and it is easy to see why it is not attracting viewers. Even reality shows need ‘characters’ that make us want to watch – they can be good guys or gals or villains but they keep us tuning in, whether it is Omarosa or the Jersey shore people or the Kardashians or the judges on Idol or Americas Got Talent. There were no interesting people on this show. They were boring and when they were not boring they were involved in situations that an all American audience is going to have a hard time dealing with – the man who converts to Islam and then has to give up his dog? The dress code that seems to be for women only (even the Amish and Hasids apply their dress requirements equally to men and women) – so even though the show is set in Michigan there is not a lot that a large audience can relate to even with the group sessions where they discuss how they handle problems. Other than the football game (one of the men is a coach) you dont have a lot of larger scale interaction with non Muslims so you dont get much variety or scope (again i will say i just saw one episode so maybe others had more community interaction)
The other thing is – despite the picture at the top of this article not once did the men look happy. They did not crack a smile. They looked like they really did not want to be in this show at all and if they dont want to be there how are they going to persuade me to tune in?
Home Depot is right across the street from me but I’ll drive the 4 miles to Lowes now to support their decision.
I just fail to understand who protests someone airing commercials. I’ve never once thought to myself “my God, this show/channel is missing…Lowe’s ads.” I get that there’s a bigger political point to make, but come on. Let it go.
Lowes can spend their advertising dollars any way they choose. if you don’t like it, don’t shop there.
Several posters mentioned tolerance and acceptance, but it seems to be a one way street. I haven’t seen any evidence that CAIR practices either one.
