EXCLUSIVE: Abel Ferrara and screenwriter Christ Zois are indeed working on a feature script partly inspired by this summer’s sex scandal surrounding former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn. Wild Bunch’s Vincent Maraval has confirmed it. Gérard Depardieu and Isabelle Adjani are circling characters based on the scandal-plagued former IMF chief and his wife Anne Sinclair. They’ve met with the director. But Maraval says the project is still a long way from active development.
The idea for a film came about on a lark when Ferrara was making 4:44 Last Day On Earth with Wild Bunch earlier this year. Per Maraval, it was suggested that the DSK sex scandal would be a good fit for Ferrara given the filmmaker’s penchant for themes of addiction. Maraval says Ferrara and sometime collaborator Zois are now writing a script which could include elements inspired by the lives of other politicians like Bill Clinton and Silvio Berlusconi along with Strauss-Kahn. But, despite earlier reports in the French press, he stresses it’s too early to say anything definitively. “One thing we do know is that there’s a real common desire amongst Depardieu, Adjani and Ferrara to work together. But like every day in this business, we have to see if there’s a film there. Today, the only reality is that they are writing something inspired by Strauss-Kahn that will focus on addiction and politicians. It’s more that than the Strauss-Kahn scandal itself,” says Maraval noting, “If it becomes a serious thing, I’m not even sure it will be the same film with Adjani and Depardieu.” Finally, he adds, “If we feel there’s a movie, we’ll go further.” Queried about the project in an interview published in France’s Le Journal Du Dimanche yesterday, Depardieu declined to comment on rumors but offered, “In general, I’m very good at playing characters that I don’t like or those that I don’t resemble.”

Abel is still alive?
This I would definitely watch. Not because of DSK particularly but because of Isabelle.
I’m sure DSK will be thrilled to know that Abel is writing/directing. The guy is a lunatic who hasn’t made a relevant film in decades. Too bad — it’s an interesting topic.
Bad Lieutenant (1992) just sails in under the radar, based on your “decades” dismissal. And while you may consider his work no longer relevant, Wild Bunch does, and they’re single handedly believing in once great talents, showing yet again that the French never forget talent, while Americans are quick to trash our artists. Case in point: Chaplin. Abel should receive your kudos for relevance simply for attacking this topic.
Abel is so abel. Dirty, nasty, f*&%ed up. Perfect! Can’t wait!
EXACTLY. Deranged sleazebags with Park Avenue addresses. Get in there, Abel! Keep it depraved, Depardieu. Don’t hold back and I’ll pay my fourteen!
Wow, the trifecta of wierdness …. A crazy man directs a rapist and a crazy woman in a film about an alleged rapist and a Con woman … Please please let it be.
Depardieu, a rapist ? Since when ? Where did you get that ? Stop writing bullshit.
Ridiculous. The real facts need more time to come out. Nothing that has played out in the press is on the money. Such a movie now would just be an opportunist stab in the dark.
Oh gawd…I thought the actual case itself was ridiculous, now Hollywood is going to bore viewers even more with a he said, she said shameless act involving character defamation? What next? The Casey Anthony trial? How about O.J. Simpson? Conrad Murray? It’s bad enough that Hollywood’s trend this year was producing sequels, how could this possibly be considered a worthwhile venture, especially when DSK’s accusation never even happened.
Ferrara is a shlockmeister who, over the years, a few teenage boys, stoners and fanboys have mistaken for a serious artist. His recent output has been unwatchable. For someone who is determinedly demented, his canvas is decidedly dull. True, he’s even sleazier than DSK. For what it’s worth, though, my money is on this film never getting made.
The next great flop in the making.
I can hadly wait, a movie about a horny old man.Got to be great.LOL
Who would give Abel a job????????? HOLLYWOOD IS GOING THRU ONE OF IT’S WORST BOX OFFICES IN
YEARS AND THEY WONDER WHY —- ???????
maybe Depardeau could “piss”‘ on the script…give it that so needed extra touch. What a” wild bunch” of non-talents.
After being a “rapist”, now Depardieu is a “non-talent” ??? Where did you also get that ? Depardieu is a huge talent and I guess, to judge him the way you do, you’ve never seen him acting. Please stop writing bullshit !!!
Say what you will about Abel Ferarra but anyone who thinks for a moment that either Gerard Depardieu or Isabelle Adjani are “no talents” has their head up their ass and should probably stick to watching Lindsay Lohan’s ouvre because I get the feeling that she is more your style. Gerard and Isabelle are continuing to do fantastic work on film which is more than one could say for their American counterparts.
Abel is a tremendously talented filmmaker and I’m proud to have been a part of 4:44 Last Day on Earth. Check 4:44 out and you’ll see how he is still very relevent today. Genius!
