This is an odd pairing — Don Draper and Horatio Caine will now be on the same network! In its first off-network acquisition, AMC, home of Mad Men, Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead, has picked up off-network rights to CBS’ veteran procedural CSI: Miami. The deal with CBS Television Distribution, said to be worth tens of millions of dollars, covers the existing 10 seasons of CSI: Miami as well as Seasons 11 and 12 if produced. (Today’s deal certainly increases the chances of the show continuing on CBS beyond the current 10th season). With the exception of Seasons 11 and 12, which AMC would get exclusively, the pact is non-exclusive. A&E, which had been the exclusive cable home of CSI: Miami, will continue to air the show from 6 AM-4 PM. AMC is getting fringe and primetime rights with a 4 PM-6 AM window. The drama starring David Caruso will make its debut on AMC on January 2 at 5 PM and will air in the hour Monday through Friday.
CSI: Miami has strong brand recognition as part of the hugely popular CSI franchise and is one of the most-watched series in the world. As a procedural, it also is highly repeatable, which is key for cable networks looking for ways to enhance their lineups. As an hourlong, CSI: Maimi also will give AMC flexibility scheduling-wise. So far, the network has been able to complement its original series only with movies, which are harder to schedule because of their varying length. Still, CSI: Miami, a meat-and-potatoes procedural that has never been nominated for major awards, seems like an odd companion to AMC’s lineup of acclaimed originals. Additionally, it is interesting that in its evolution, AMC is taking a direction opposite to the conventional one. Most cable networks start with off-network product and gradually expand into originals; AMC established itself as a strong original series player before venturing into off-network acquisitions.

What does this mean as far as residuals for guild members (actors, writers, directors)?
Seriously? It’s like if HBO acquired the rights to Law & Order: SVU.
It’s more like what if HBO acquired the rights to the craptastic 90210 (either version) or 7th Heaven. It’s an inexplicable lapse in taste.
Well, csi Miami is a great show. It is a big International hit , doing way better than other new CBS shows as Hawaii 50 and Person of Interest. It will be smart for CBS to keep it for a few more years.
Totally agree. This makes no branding sense. AMC please stay strong. PLEASE.
The above comment was for Zach.
From Howard Hawks to Mad Men to Walking Dead to CSI: Miami? A slippery slope indeed
Looking forward to Whitney on AMC.
I’m so disappointed. I had suspected that if AMC ever tried to pick up a syndicated show, it’d be more along the lines of Veronica Mars or Pushing Daisies. This doesn’t seem right for their brand.
Brand. What a quaint notion….
AMC! What are you doing? Stay strong, PLEASE.
I have no problem with this. Hopefully it will generate money so the network can keep creating original series. Let’s just hope there next project is better than Hell on Wheels.
They’re brand? They’re brand is about getting viewers and advertisers anyway possible. Sad but true.
this is great! CSI Miami is amazing! Miami is the best CSI compare do the other ones, they deserve to be in this network!
Remember when AMC was a rival to TCM?
Now it seems to be setting itself up to become the next TNT.
I dont mind. A&e, cbs and now amc; thats amazing! I LOOOOOOVE csi miami. Its my favorite tv show on tv today! My favorite actor is and ALWAYS will be jonathan togo. Hes incredibly talented, unbearably hot and cute. I also love ryan wolfe the character jonathan togo plays. Ive been watching csi miami since 2003 and im glad its STILL on! I need more csi miami! Im not complaining! I cant wait!
Yet another station losing its identity. AMC is going the way of MTV.
I know one station I can now completely bypass 5 nights a week. If I didn’t know better I would say the brains behind SYFY were behind this. Might be a popular series but it’s not worth PAYING for and that is the whole point of cable. It should be for product that is worth PAYING for. I gave up on AMC for good movies a long time ago but I have enjoyed Mad Men and Walking Dead. Cable is really struggling right now. Moves like this are moving me closer to quitting cable.
So happy AMC has picked up CSI Miami!! A&E seemed to not care if they showed it or not, substituting marathons of boring reality shows. At least I can see the show at AMC, as you cannot even count on seeing the current season on CBS because of football game delays!!
The More CSI Miami, the better. CBS has been screwing the show up with that sunday night slot, so hopefully this will help the ratings. After 10 years, they are still in the 9.5-10.5 million viewer range. Great stuff! I’m glad so many people still enjoy the program. There are so many police shows with a dark, new york/chicago type of image – its depressing. This daylight drama in the beautiful city of Miami (even if its not filmed there) with a fun cast, just lifts the mood. I love it! Hoping for a season 11. Thanks AMC!
screw this. doesnt belong on amc get this shit outta here… AMC sold out.
This is awful. Terrible corny show. Amc needs to focus on movies. Then mad men and walking dead that’s it. None of this picking up awful prime time shows
So much hate for CSI: Miami, 99% from people who don’t watch the show, methinks. When firing on all cylinders, CSI:Miami is one of my favorite shows on any network. I’m glad AMC is more interested in television than movies; who wants to watch censored, commercial-ridden versions Hollywood hits, anyway? AMC, between The Walking Dead, Hell on Wheels, and now CSI: Miami (surely to be followed by other strong, visually engaging dramas), is setting itself up to be a true contender to the prime-time crown.
I hope CSI Miami is worked into a new series on AMC. It is a great show. It is far above all of the reality series that is on TV.
