Thousands of film fans responded to the survey, which was posted on Fandango.com during the first weeks of December. According to male moviegoers, the most anticipated blockbuster of 2012 will be Warner Bros’ The Hobbit, while for females, it’s Summit’s Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2. When it comes to remakes, men are most anticipating Sony’s Total Recall while women are most looking forward to Warner Bros’ The Great Gatsby. Several studios are missing from these lists, so it looks like some marketing departments have to play catch-up in the coming months:

Not one original idea between any of them. How depressing. Hollywood is circling the drain.
It’s not Hollywoods fault that our most anticipated movies are remakes and sequels. When the movie going populace demands originality, then the studios will supply it.
Spare me.
Sigh, so internet polls are news now?
So in that case “Snakes on a Plane” and “Scott Pilgrim” are massive blockbusters? “Supernatural” is one of the most popular shows in the world?
No?
Exactly.
At least that means Community is coming back… right?!
Mirror Mirror? Seriously? These people must not have seen the preview. That movie looks to be on par with the new Three Stooges movie in terms of quality.
They got confused and thought it was the Charlize Theron one.
couldn’t agree more
Anything for kids? This was a light year for kid/family films. My 11-year-old only asked to see 4 movies the entire year and all of them were live-action.
So we’re back to thinking cartoons are for kids and kids don’t like live action? Great!
I wouldn’t place too much faith in a survey of “thousands of fans” on Fandango.
I’m looking forward to Total Recall. Love Colin Farrell. Hope they do the original justice
Somehow, I get the feeling that the Hobbits movie is going to be a huge let down. The lord of the rings were a one off phenomenon. Not many people would place it in their top ten movies of all time.
Lara, you’re kidding right?
I sincerely hope so. That’s just…. insane.
No, she’s really not…just ask any Kevin Smith fan or watch the “3 movies of people walking!” scene in Clerks 2.
Aren’t these ALL remakes (ex Hobbit) … !!?? ….
I see Relativity interns are busy again – Mirror, Mirror?
So tired of people complaining about the lack of “original” ideas in hollywood movies today. Gone With The Wind, Jaws, The Color Purple, T2:Judgment Day, Forrest Gump, The Dark Knight or LOTR:Return Of The King weren’t “original”ideas ideas either…are you going to say they weren’t great movies?
It’s all about the execution of the idea, not where the idea comes from.
Some of those films have great people involved and should be excellent movies.
I’m not sure if I agree with you totally. Its hard to be completely original. But there was nothing like Jaws before that came out.LOTR was not like anything out before it- in scope-look -.Actually I see a lot of in Game of Thrones- which I love. But I agree most directors don’t know how to execute films to their possible potential.
Uhhh, GWTW, The Color Purple, Jaws not “original”??? Well, yes I GUESS since they were adapted from books but they were the FIRST adaptations and the films became classics. What people are complaining about now are the remakes of classic FILMS. I mean, seriously–remaking American Psycho from 2000 and Starship Troopers (true–not a classic) from 1997 (and Footloose, Conan, etc)????
What the hell? It’s like Hollywood is aiming to serve ONLY 18-25 year olds these days.
Why isn’t Mirror Mirror #1 on all of the lists?!!
your kidding right ? I would have seen it if Tim Burton was at the helm
Disney must be terribly concerned that neither john carter NOR Brave are on this list, especially considering they’re spending so much on both the films and the marketing.
What’s going on at Disney? They need some real changes in marketing.
Based upon what I saw at D23, Brave should be a hit, and John Carter a disaster.
Disney has completely forgotten how to market movies. They need a complete overhaul of their marketing committee. I mean seriously, taking the words “of Mars” out of the John Carter movie? They do realize most people (sci-fi geeks excluded) will have NO idea now what the movie’s about??
When I first heard the title, I thought it was a new Terminator movie.
Personally, I can’t wait for 47 RONIN. Incredible story. I’m very curious how it’s portrayed on screen. Its themes of nobility and sacrifice are so appropriate for the present day.
YES! Stop reading my mind dude! 47 Ronin is MY MOST ANTICIPATED MOVIE of next year!
What about “the Vow” for women? Really looking forward to Rachel and Channing on Valenines
These lists are silly and always inaccurate. Anyone who doesn’t think The Dark Knight Rises won’t sweep across the board among both demographics, like it did in 2008, is kidding.
Agree 100%. The fact that The Hobbit ranked above it for men is hilarity, and that Mirror, Mirror is on the list for women and Dark Knight isn’t is even more hilarious.
Just for the record, I’m a woman and I have zero interest in Dark Knight. But I can’t wait to see the Hobbit.
The Bourne Legacy? I think it’ll be a good movie, but the people that took this poll are probably missing that someone’s not back this time.
Shocked that The Dark Knight Rises is not the #1 most anticipated film.
and Hollywood wonders why people aren’t going to the movies. another bumper year of crap it sounds like. only thing there I would see is the Hobbit
So men are looking forward to the remake of The Great Gatsby? You can flush this list down the crapper.
there is no way anybody in the world anticipates mirror mirror… have you seen the trailer?
Agreed, Lara.
I enjoyed the first LOTR, but the next two less so. I thought they were kind of tedious. Taking into account the extended editions, fans have probably 12 hours of Tolkien; people are really clamoring for more? On top of that, they are stretching the Hobbitt novel out to two films?
I guess the hardcore fans are digging it, I just don’t get it.
Yes, people are clamoring for more. And no, you don’t have to get it.
Prometheus should be at the top of this list.
So we will have sci/fy, super heroes, vampire stories,Tolkien, and a remake of F.S Fitzgerald oh and some fairy tales on steroids.Hollywood ain’t for grown-ups anymore.
F Scott Fitzgerald isn’t for grownups??
Saw MIB 3 at a Sony test screening…
Tank city.
There is no way in hell that people are actually looking forward to Men in Black 3.
