EXCLUSIVE: CAA has signed Melissa Leo, the reigning Best Supporting Actress winner for The Fighter. Leo had been repped by ICM. Leo was best known for her work on the NBC drama Homicide until she caught feature momentum first with Frozen River, which won her the Best Actress Independent Spirit Award and got her an Oscar nomination, and then with The Fighter, which won her the Golden Globe and then the Oscar after Leo scrapped her way to attention by waging her own awards campaign and delivered the most animated acceptance speech of the evening. Leo most recently starred in the Kevin Smith-directed Red State and the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce.

Joanne Wiles killed it for her. Consider this…

Good luck! She’s effing crazy.
I guess now we know what she was considering in her fur coat by the pool
Faux fur
She was so good in Red State. So so good. Another nom would be deserving, too bad everyone ignores Kevin Smith.
I thought Joanne did an amazing job for her.
Joanne Wiles is an amazing agent, incredibly hardworking and one of the most honest and intelligent. I am surprised…
Joanne pushes this lady for years and gets her a role that gets her an Oscar and this is how she repays her? CAA can have her. She will be doing network TV in two years for the CW. Tacky Leo.. just tacky.
Weinberg-CAA, sound familiar.
Exactly. Playing dumb with Hilary Swank means now he’s gotta pony up with his remaining source of prestige.
When you don’t have Harvey Weinstein’s full backing – you are unfairly ignored.
When you have Harvey Weinstein’s full backing – you are unfairly awarded.
Leo – classless. Joanne busted ass for her.
Joanne wiles is better with her talented directors like Derick Martini.
Derick Martini is one of those writer directors who keeps hiring the same actors and crews for his films. My understanding is that he is very loyal in general and Joanne Wiles has been his agent since he began in the biz. I also understand that Martini, like many other of Joanne’s clients, have been wooed regularly over the years by all of the agencies and none have left until Leo. Also, most of Wiles’ important clients left with her from WMA, so this is surprising and unfortunate.
She has loyal clients. Martini among them.
Is no one else considering the idea that she wants to be at an agency that’ll still exist in 2 years? Come on…
And she isn’t the only one considering it.
Poor decision considering the history, but I do understand how that decision is made and I totally understand how CAA would (and should) take advantage of ICM’s current “condition”.
ICM could be gone in 2 years. Joanne could be at CAA in 2 years. Anything, ANYTHING is possible these days. Still amazes me that talent at her tier can be talked into believing it’s more about the agency than the agent when you’re talking CAA/WME/UTA/ICM.
i have never seen an agent that works as hard for his/her clients than jo (just ask her poor assistant). have fun sitting on kevin huvane’s phonesheet melissa
AGREED!
Huvane has bigger fish to fry, like Oprah.
Ok, seriously, Joanne got her an academy award last year and this is how she repays her?
Joanne is a machine. She reads, has first class/great taste and kills for her clients. I too have really never seen an agent that works as hard for his or her clients. Jason Weinberg should be ashamed for enabling the PR BS to worry Melissa.
So, ICM is going thru corporate shifts which happen to be playing out in the press. I hear that ICM actually had one of the most profitable years ever and as a company is well. People have egos, you don’t fight over something with no value. Everyone may have a different vision BUT bottom line….ICM isn’t going anywhere. An agent at CAA told me that Huvane simply took an incoming call as they worked together 20+ years ago when she was on a soap. He had no interest in representing her but obviously wouldn’t decline. I will never and I promise you never hire Melissa Leo again. What’s she going to get Meryl Streep’s seconds — I think not. There are ten women ahead of her.
Completely agree. Joanne and all the agents working with her and around her at ICM are extremely hard working. And yes, when the wrinkles shake out, ICM will be around in 2 years. Jo reads the scripts, makes the calls, answers the calls, listens to the client’s concerns. She is there 100% for the clients. There seems to be a lot of crap flinging by some posters on Deadline at ICM, but remember at the end of the day it’s about the AGENT not the AGENCY and ICM has some great hard working agents bolstered by some very hard working assistants, hands down!!!!
Melissa is absolutely insane, everyone knows this. The real question is why a great agent like Joanne still works at that fourth-tier joke of an agency.
And you are obviously in some capacity an insider there to make that claim, because, of course, your claim is based on facts and derived from your own personal experiences with ICM I’m sure.
Ooh another client for jason weinberg
Joanne Wiles did some truly amazing and inspiring work for this woman – what a dumb move….
The only reason anyone on this site even knows who ML is is because of Joanne Wiles.
It’s not about the agency ML, it’s the agent.
I work with every agent at the top 4 all the time and I consider Joanne to be one of the best agents in this town. Not just great taste, but really cares for her clients – which is rare – and also busts her ass for them.
Big mistake ML. You just left one of the good ones.
Oh come on. Derek Martini? Way way overrated. Derek, 95 North ring a bell? Keep trying. Won’t get there.
Joanne is a, I like her. But Derek Martini? Hey now!
When did this become a post about Martini? He’s a young filmmaker who is loyal to Joanne and hasn’t even reached his potential.
Grow up
Derick Martini is the shizzle. Weird, not accessable, like a young Howard Hughes type. I heard he’s f-ing loaded and is very particular about his films and people he works with. And really, what is there to overrate him on? I saw one film he made which was Lymelife and it rocked and I hear Hick is completely love it or hate it kind of risk stuff.
Rate someone a little older and who has more films under their belt.
Big mistake. Big. HUGE.
And calling up CAA like that? Pathetic!
Melissa owes everything to Joanne, and the Golden Globe shout out to her was well-deserved. BUT…at the end of the day, Joanne’s better off without her.
Melissa set fires that had to be put out during awards season – the ridiculous ‘Consider’ ads, astronomical styling costs and her potty-mouth lunacy at the Oscars.
CAA’s in for a gigantic headache. Their loss. No gain.
I wouldn’t spend too much time feeling bad for Joanne Wiles. If she can figure out how to get a 50 year old “never was” an Academy Award, she’s bound to do amazing things with her more commercially viable (but every bit as talented) other clients. Feel bad fr Melissa who, we will likely never hear from again.
It’s always so disheartening to read about these things. When someone does everything right and still gets clipped, it’s painful for everyone who works hard.. Shame on Melissa Leo for trying to trade-up rather than being smart enough to appreciate the incredible work already done on her behalf.
Jason Weinberg moving a client to CAA isn’t news. It’s just a normal weekday.
Wow. I came here to bash ML for leaving Joanne after everything she did for ML and am SO HAPPY to see all the others who beat me to the punch!
Joanne is an amazing, rare agent who ACTUALLY DOES HER JOB. You know, things like…reads scripts! Has taste! Takes risks! Believes in people! ML will learn shortly that joining the Borg under ANY agent won’t get her the energy that Joanne brought for her all day every day.
Shame on you ML.
Joanne: I hope you read this. All the best to you, always.
Can ICM sign John Heard now?
