Charlie Sheen’s public rants against Two And A Half Men co-creator Chuck Lorre ultimately got the actor fired from the hit comedy series. But if Lorre had his way, he would’ve left first,
just as Sheen was going off the rails early year. “I offered to quit the show last winter,” Lorre told TV Guide in an extensive interview. “I said, ‘Listen, if for some reason I’m now the Antichrist, I’m happy to leave. It’s not in my interest to stop the show, and I certainly don’t want to put all these people out of work. Keep going. Get another guy. Don’t stop on my account.’ ”
And that was not the first time Lorre thought about leaving the show. In the interview, he said he regretted not quitting the show after Sheen was arrested for allegedly threatening his wife with a knife on Christmas Day in 2009. “When he started attacking people with knives, that’s it,” Lorre said. “That should have been it. I should have walked. That’s unthinkable. No more. I’m done. But for some reason I thought that because she was willing to forgive him … we could emerge from this fiasco and be stronger and healthier.”
Despite their acrimonious divorce, complete with a $100 million lawsuit that has been settled, Lorre had a lot of praise for his former leading man, even comparing Sheen to Dean Martin. “Charlie is the epitome of cool and he made it look effortless,” Lorre said. “People never gave him enough credit for how skillful he was because he made it look so easy. There’s that element of Charlie that’s admirable and he was the kind of guy you wanted to hang out with. He was a special guy. But special guys are not immune to drug addiction.” Lorre also reflected on Sheen’s final months on the show. “Last January and February it was not working anymore,” he said. “You couldn’t do that much cocaine and work. It was heartbreaking to be around here last year.”
Despite numerous reports about years of underlying tension between Lorre and Sheen that bubbled up to the surface when Sheen’s inhibitions were suppressed by drugs, Lorre painted a rather idyllic picture of the duo’s relationship prior to Sheen’s public outburst earlier this year. “The man was my friend,” Lorre said. “I cared for him deeply. We had a great time. … We held hands and prayed when his sons were born prematurely.”
Other tidbits from Lorre’s TV Guide interview:
– Lorre first conceived Ashton Kutcher’s character as a hotshot Hollywood actor, but Lorre felt that was too close to Sheen’s Charlie Harper and made him an Internet billionaire instead.
– Lorre confirmed that he put pressure on the TV Academy and Fox to back out of a plan to have Sheen present the best comedy series actor award at the Emmys. “I thought it was really disrespectful to the nominees,” Lorre said. “That’s their moment, and it was somehow undermined by this melodrama that was happening on stage. I don’t have any regrets about making some phone calls and saying, ‘Really? You’re going to do this?’ ” Fox and Emmys executive producer Mark Burnett went ahead with the plan anyway, with Sheen presenting the award to Jim Parsons from Lorre’s other series, The Big Bang Theory.
– Kutcher, who was also interviewed, hinted that he would likely renew his deal for 2.5 Men, which is up at the end of this season. “Right now I’m still enjoying it,” he said. “And as long as I’m enjoying something, I’ll stick with it.”

Kutcher’s character is also, a complete f-up on Lorre’s part. Kutcher could’ve nailed another type of character, not a CHARLIE HARPER clone but someone in the same vain, but they went the opposite route, made him a dopey boyish clueless geek, and it’s super unfunny as a result.
I’m thinking, but don’t recall Kutcher ever playing anything other than a dopey boyish clueless geek. Gielgud he ain’t.
Sheen’s character lost himself in women and drink at the end of his run. He became completely aimless and undefined.
Lots of nasty cracks about sex and declining health, clearly for Sheen through the character.
Kutcher’s character is similarly undefined – and they’re halfway through the first season. The best thing they could do is give him a brilliant idea for a new startup and surround him with a bunch of underlings (with their own idiosyncrasies. Make Alan the office manager so he’s still “essential” to the show.
Love this idea. It’s starting to feel like it’s really floundering and I’m losing interest, which sucks because I love the supporting cast. But they need to figure out ASAP where this is headed and give Walden a stronger personality – it’s all over the place right now.
…and cross it over with the Big Bang boys so that Walden bankrolls one of Sheldon’s projects. That would totally work.
I watched the episode last night – it was deeply unfunny. Between Broke Girls, 2.5 Men, and Mike and Molly, that’s a spectacularly horrible lineup (and I used to love 2.5 backintheday). It just shows how starved the audience is for comedy right now, any comedy, that these shows are actually “popular”.
Maybe I just have poor taste, but I own a box set and have seen every episode. Last night’s episode I stopped halfway through realizing “I just can’t keep watching this show hoping it’ll return to what it once was.”
Get Charlie back or find someone (ANYONE) to replace Ashton or just pull the plug already.
Almost everything that was once “good” about this show is now gone.
This guy needs to let goooooooooooooooooooo. Get over it, dude.
Just curious, how many of the people telling Chuck Lorre to get over it have had their professional and personal lives affected by a friend going near suicidal/homicidal crazy with drugs, been hit by a $100 million lawsuit, been responsible for keeping three hit shows on the air and hundreds of people employed while all this was going on, while also having your name and everything you’ve accomplished for twenty years trashed on the Internet and in the press?
Show of hands?
Well stated. Chuck Lorre was too kind in his comments.
silly silly silly..Chuck Lorre is not a ‘victim’..pathetic comments..eyeroll..MAJOR EYEROLL actually.
As someone who’s actually met Chuck, eyeroll right back: Unless you’ve worked for him, spare me.
The only time 2.5 Men is funny these days is when they recall Charlie.
Kutcher’s character, the dopey boy, is an Epic Fail.
Here is a tiny violin for Chuck. Boo hoo.
hey Deadline, i love how you only write about the parts where he so ‘praise’ Charlie Sheen, how about ALL the other parts where he tries to portray himself as some poor poor victim to BIG BAD WOLF Charlie..
As for the ‘knive stories’ it is allegations and Lorre shame on him use it as some justification to his asshole behaviour whereas Brooke Mueller can be violent, is a liar and is as much ..well scratch that even more a drug addict than Charlie. Pathetic Chuck Lorre you are and move on you have hit shows Charlie is gone, stop whining you are not A FREAKING VICTIM !!
Chuck Lorre was going to quit over Charlie Sheen placing a knife at Brooke’s neck??? What did that have to do with you? Are you Brooke?
He must think he is.
GEEZ!
It’s called integrity. Chuck regrets not having enough of it.
Well it is also ‘ALLEGATIONS’ and he talk about that like it is some facts (like lot’s of ‘so noble’ trash medias by the way) in order to use it to make excuses for his passive-agressive actions..poor poor victim..whatever..
Why is Chuck still talking about this! Nobody cares. Get out of your little narcissistic bubble chuck. We all tuned in to watch the train wreck that was CS when he got derailed. Nobody cares about you. The show is awful. Nothing but an incredible cash cow for all involved. Be proud of that – but the show is unwatchable.
Had producer Chuck Lorre left “Two And A Half Men”, CBS likely would have cancelled the show in the wake of The Charlie Sheen Meltdown, despite the show’s high ratings.
I am surprised the show’s ratings have held up. I expected that after a couple of episodes, the numbers would have plunged.
I don’t know how, but CBS is able to fake the ratings for there shows on Monday Night. The ratings are so inflaited it’s obvious. I KNOW 2.5 men averages 11 million viewers, NOT the 15+ million that is reported.
Wonder if CBS would have been willing to let Lorre out of his contract? Seems highly unlikely.
This is very interesting to hear it was so shocking the insults that Charlie Sheen said it was really mean and hurtful.
Chaim SHOULD have quit when Carlos was dissing him in public, because this season of TWO AND A HALF MEN is quite possibly the worst in its entire run. Kutcher is simply not funny, or not even believable as billionaire Walden.
Lorre also changed the relationship of the remaining characters. While everyone was flawed, the characters (maybe not the actors) were written that they cared for each other. Maybe their actions were 180-degrees in opposition to that, but the show, in its few quiet moments, revealed that characters really cared for one another. Cut to this season’s opening show in the funeral scene, where one character after another rips Sheen’s now-dead character. It doesn’t take deep therapy to see what Lorre was doing.
Also at its core, TWO AND A HALF MEN worked best as an ensemble show. Few of those ensemble actors have been in this season, including Evelyn, Judith, Rose, Herb, Berta, even Jake. Yes, some of them have been around, but their parts are significnatly reduced.
I think Lorre is enacting a scorched earth policy for this show’s undoubtedly-final season. The re-runs of the original cast in syndication on several networks are still funnier and more entertaining this this season.
Sorry, Chaim. Carlos may have had a meltdown a year ago, but he seems to have recovered. You? Not so much.
AaaaaaaaaMEN!!!
The seemed to jump the shark last night….Kutcher needs a haircut. The long hair is distracting and obnoxious. What is the point of the long hair?
Maybe “hugged by a gorilla” will become the new “jumped the shark”.
BTW, anybody know how much the change of direction is also affected by co-EP Lee Aronsohn?
“Right now I’m still enjoying it,” he said. “And as long as I’m enjoying something, I’ll stick with it.”
Really…?
I love how people say the show isn’t funny NOW. It has never been funny. Charlie Sheen is so messed up he has actually slipped up in interviews and basically shows that he thinks he is that character. He lost the line of where reality and fiction. But seriously, the show has always been awful, don’t blame Kutcher.
I blame Kutcher (and the writers) and think Sheen gave some smarts and witty double-entendre, subtlety to an otherwise generic, fart jokes CBS sitcom. End of story, oh and i can’t wait for Anger Management this summer on FX a pretty good cable network.
p.s: Kutcher is not funny and can’t act no matter what, just watch his movies (if you can..lol) and you will see.
I can not and I will not watch this show. Ashton Kutcher needs to go….he thinks he is all that with a bag of chips…not so.
Any man that can cheat on his wife on their anniversay…is as low as you can go…Charlie needs to come back. Until then…I will play scrabble on my kindle or watch another show!!!
