EXCLUSIVE: I hear that HBO is finalizing a deal for a pilot order to The Viagra Diaries, a half-hour comedy created by Sex and the City creator/executive producer Darren Star and starring Oscar winner Goldie Hawn. The project is looking for a director and eyes spring production start in New York. Based on the book by Barbara Rose Brooker, Viagra Diaries centers on a woman (Hawn) who, after her husband has a “mid-life crisis” at 65 and leaves her, struggles with being single for the first time in 35 years.
The novel was first eyed for a feature, with husband-and-wife duo Alan and Wendy Riche and their son Peter attached to produce. Independent TV producer Aaron Kaplan (Terra Nova) then took over the property and, with the Riches still on board, took it to Star who came on board to adapt it as a comedy series. Star and Kaplan pitched the project to HBO and convinced Hawn to star in what would be her first role in almost a decade, since the 2002 movie The Banger Sisters. Star, Hawn, Kaplan, Hawn, her managers Brian Medavoy and Alan Nevins as well as Alan, Wendy and Peter Riche are executive producing. After a start in television on Good Morning, World and Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In, Hawn transitioned to features, starring in a string of comedies and earning an Oscar in 1970 for Cactus Flower. Hawn and Star, who executive produces with Kaplan ABC’s midseason dramedy GCB, are repped by UTA. When official, The Viagra Diaries will join HBO’s current crop of pilots, Noah Baumbach’s drama The Corrections, produced by Scott Rudin and starring Chris Cooper, Dianne Wiest and Ewan McGregor, and Doug Ellin’s comedy 40 starring Ed Burns, Michael Imperioli, Adrian Pasdar and Michael Rapaport.

Just a matter of time before Goldie joins Diane Keaton, Tea Leoni and lots of other big, sad stars in HBO’s expensive dumpster!
Tea Leoni is a big star?
The Viagra Diaries, like Barbara’s other work: So Long Princess & God Doesn’t Make Trash is a mixture of bold social commentary, rich characters and laugh-out-loud humor. I’ve been a fan of this book since reading the manuscript in September of 2009. Barbara Rose Brooker does for seniors what Helen Gurley Brown & Erica Jong did for the women’s sexual revolution of 60′s & 70′s with Sex and the Single Girl and Fear of Flying. Brooker’s prose is poetry. I fell in love with her lead Anny Applebaum the minute I opened page one and I’m sure as Goldie Hawn brings her to life for HBO, I’ll fall in love with her all over again. It’s the sort of story Darren Star tells best and the sort of character Goldie Hawn was born to play: vulnerable, funny, down but not damaged and sexy no matter what the age. Yes, older. No, never old.
I love it!!!! Finally, finally, finally a series for my age group!!! I love Goldie and this is Darren’s millieu!
Goldie Hawn + Darren Starr – Great for 1990
Unfortunately “cable guy” said it all.Hawn is very much showing her age and looks terrible on camera. and instead of aging gracefully like Helen Mirren, a class act and chosing roles that compliment her,she does this soap opera? Let’s see if darren starr gets thrown off this project also and bared from set.
Someone is jealous. Goldie Hawn is not only gorgeous and ‘shows,’ her age with glam, talent, beauty, and energy. Darren Star is so talented it’s good he’s barred from sets, especially when he’s too good for the projects.
Diane
To “Cable guy” and Kaitlin -Putting down two of the most talented people in our business is not only insulting, lacking class but very revealing of your own lack of character. Your mean insults will soon be forgotten but Goldie and Darren will live on and bring joy, insight and laughter to the world.
HBO is really getting old. Enlightened, viagra diaries, 40.
Jesus, u seriosly think your being “groundbreaking” with all these upper middle class white people midlife crisis shows? ouch
Enlightened shouldn’t be mentioned in this discussion. it’s brilliant. renew it NOW
What a team… Goldie Hawn, Darren Star, a Triple Riche delight. I think this role is carved out for Goldie Hawn and can’t wait to see the Pilot. A woman’s intuition is that this sounds like a series that will capture the ever growing mature audience, both female and male. What a team, what a treat!
Hey! We all need lots of fun (Goldie), reflection (Diane) and beauty (Tea) in our lives! No more said.
