Considering how much of the revenue in Hollywood comes from retail sales and consumer electronics, there’s sure to be some teeth gnashing over the earnings figures out this morning from Best Buy for the quarter that ended in November. Shares in the No. 1 electronics chain are down more than 11% in early trading after it reported net profits of $154M, down 29% from the same period last year, on revenues of $12.1B, up 1.8%. Factoring out a one-time restructuring charge and a gain on an investment sale, earnings came in at 47 cents a share – below the 51 cents that analysts expected. Best Buy attributes much of the profit drop to declining purchases of digital cameras and game consoles, as well as promotions — including those on Black Friday — to drive sales of tablet computers, TV sets and movies. Still, entertainment sales including music and DVDs fell 9% at domestic stores open 14 months or more. They now account for 13% of Best Buy’s U.S. revenue. Consumer electronics, which represent 35% of Best Buy’s domestic sales, were down 4.8%. The chain had better luck with computers and mobile phones, which represent 40% of sales and were up 8.8%.
Best Buy’s announcement came as the Commerce Department offered a mixed picture of retail sales in November. Spending increased 0.2% with gains for electronics, appliances, cars, clothing, and department store items but declines for building materials, gas, and groceries. It’s the sixth consecutive month of growth, but it’s less than forecasters expected — and down from the 0.6% spending growth in October.

Perhaps people are starting to realize how overpriced Best Buy is and are shopping on Amazon?
No, Amazon is just as overpriced as anybody. That is the reason why they want a national sales tax. The only thing is that the sales tax will put the mom and pops out of business.
In other news, this is clearly a case of big media pretty much killing the motion picture and television industry.
I gave up on Best Buy as they gave up on me. I used to purchase many older classic DVD titles, but they started to limit the number of titles they carried in the stores. After going many times on a Tuesday and walking away empty handed, I just stopped going except for a new release title. My money, and it was a lot, is now being spent with Amazon and Movies Unlimited. Any teeth gashing they have is all due to their decision not to carry older classic titles. They bemoan the sales, yet they don’t have anything I want to buy. I really gave up on them this Halloween when the stores did not even carry the Blu-ray of Halloween II. They don’t want my money, then they are not going to get it.
Best Buy has horrible prices and their customer service is horrific…they hire employees that know less than their shoppers
maybe if customers didn’t feel like they everything in the store should be given to them for free the employs wouldn’t be so bad ! ps go to walmart and try finding an employee there !
ABC News did a comparison shop in an HDMI cable the cable was 24.99 at Best Buy and 5.99 on Amazon even factoring in shipping it was cheaper. After that Best Buy said they would match prices during the Holiday season.
I could never understand people going there even camping outside for the black Friday items they had because they were “limited to stock on hand” when meant 3 or 4 maybe up to 10 per store.
I was shocked to see a barrel filled with Casino Royale DVD’s at Best Buy for 99 cents on Black Friday. Perhaps that sort of strategy was a mistake…
Could Best Buy’s lower revenues be the result of deep and aggressive discounting??
“Best Buy attributes much of the profit drop to declining purchases of digital cameras and game consoles”
Interesting statement, seeing how Xbox sales broke records in October and November, thanks to back to back releases of top tier games. PS3 sales weren’t far behind. If they want to point the finger at anyone, let it be Nintendo, as interest in the Wii is plummeting, and the much hyped 3DS is still a dud even after that enormous price cut. This could probably be contributed to the same factor that is killing digital camera sales: the ever-increasing prominence and utility of the smart phone, a gadget that has replaced both the camera for the average person, and the console for the casual gamer.
Hollywood needs to understand a few things if they want me to start buying DVD’s again.
1. Price: DVD’s have not droped in price for New Releases in years. But the extra’s have.
2. Which is actually more inportant, they quality of the DVD packaging. When I use to spend $20-$30 on a New DVD of a movie or a TV show, I got a soild product. Made with Hard Plastic or in a nice hard outer box that would last. Now DVD’s come in this flimsy case with no extra’s or with 6 or 7 disc’s cramed into one disc size dvd case. I DON”T LIKE IT. When I buy a TV show, I want a real case for it, with extra’s that are worth spending the extra few bucks on. If Hollywood wants to keep spiting out this cheap crap for us to buy, that’s fine, but also release a Deluxe version that may cost a little more to make, but charge a higher price for that set. I just got some DVD’s at Amazon, Modern Family Season 2 and Big Bang Theroy for $8, cause I knew they would be cheaply made. If there was a Deluxe Version, in the older style casing, I would have payed over $25 for that.
A story about declining entertainment profits and no mention of “piracy” as the cause of all the misery? You’re saying it could be due to other factors? I’m shocked.
Actually, in a tough economy those numbers are not bad at all. BB has staying power and tremendous brand name association. I’m not worried at all about them and continue to shop with them. Their pricing is as competive as anybody especially with big ticket items like TV’s. From my experiences, their customer service has always been top notch.
How do you like working for Best Buy?
In a few years everyone will own a device the size of a wrist watch that will let you view anything, anytime, anywhere from the cloud and do ten times more than an Ipad or smart phone and stores like Best Buy will be nothing more than a rumor…
Exactly right sir.
We live on an age of technology do your homework and stop complaining because you expect someone to give you an hour lesson of how to turn on your camera.
