EXCLUSIVE: Following a successful launch of Dog Whisperer star Cesar Millan’s new Spanish-language show El Lider de la Manada in Spain, an English-language version of the show is being shopped to the U.S. networks. El Lider de la Manada, translated as The Leader Of The Pack, premiered on Spain’s Cuatro network earlier this month to more than 1.4 million viewers, about 5-times the average viewership for The Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan on the same network. (The Dog Whisperer airs in more than 109 countries.) The strong Spanish launch fast-tracked an English-language version, which is eyed to begin shooting 12 episodes in April for a December 2012 premiere on an US network. No network has been locked in yet, but there has been interest in the project, which is being shopped by WME. The agency signed Millan last year and also reps PowWow Media, which produces the show with Notro TV. Nat Geo Wild would be a natural choice as it airs The Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan whose seventh season kicks on on Jan. 7. Each episode of El Lider de la Manada features dog expert Millan rehabilitating a homeless or abandoned dog and matching it with one of three contestants who compete to provide the dog with the best home. In addition to The Leader Of The Pack, which Millan will host and executive produce, he is also currently developing two TV specials to air in the U.S. next year. Here is a promo for El Lider de la Manada in Spanish:

As a huge dog lover I have to say the show sounds great (and very tear jerking!)
sit, stay, canceled.
I agree.
His critics can say all they want about him “setting dog training back 50 years”, but his methods work.
It is NOT abuse. It’s laying out the rules just like you would to children. We’ve used all of his methods and our two dogs are super happy fulfilled companions. We constantly get remarks about how well behaved and happy they both are. Not to mention how it makes for a peaceful and happy home for everyone. We even used his methods with our 1 year old and they have been excellent with her. They respect her, they give her space, but they clearly are enamored of her as well.
Proof is in the pudding.
Laying down the rules is one thing. But I wouldn’t use choke chains or shock collars or choking with kids. And I wouldn’t use them with my dog either.
I really don’t think you’re supposed to force toddlers onto their sides or string them up by a leash to the point of asphyxiation.
I know several people who have watched this show in Spain. They say it’s very emotional and many people cry… including Cesar. I can’t wait till the show comes to U.S. and many dogs are rescued because of this show.
haha I can’t believe that a production company would really invest in such an absurd show. & then they wonder why they are close to being bankrupt! tsk tsk…!
I filmed an episode with Cesar and he is one impressive human being! I have worked in rescue for years, have rehomed a few thousand dogs. When you are in the trenches of dog rescue, one has to experience the emotions everyday of the horrendous acts of humans on mans best friend. Most people have no clue about the everyday acts of animal cruelty due to ignorance and cultural unconsciousness unless it makes it to the news. Any show that will help enlighten the human population on the care and understanding of pets can only be positive. No one can do this better than Cesar. He of course will wildly succeed as he is groundbreaking in his work and his life’s mission.
@Daniela:
Perhaps this fact from Wikipedia might shed some light on “Why?” a production company might invest in such an absurd show.
“The Dog Whisperer premiered in 2004 as a half hour program, but subsequently became first in the National Geographic channel ratings and was expanded to a prime-time, one hour format.[7] In 2007, the network renewed its most popular series to that date with an unprecendented 35 episodes in which Milan travelled the show to US cities like New York and Miami. [9] In 2008, the show in its 100th episode had grown from an estimated 100,000 households per episodes per household estimated 1,000,000 people per episode. [50] By 2010 Dog Whisperer had been the National Geographic’s top rated series for six years.”
And to further my point about his critics. It also has this entry from a respected professional stating,
“But, Horwitz adds, the show also has the major drawback of attributing behavior problems to dominance when the dog may be misbehaving because it is fearful or anxious.”
Once again, they are not familiar with the show. He does not attribute ALL problems to DOMINANCE. He spends an equal amount of time if not more on dogs who’s problems come from fear and or anxiety.
His critics would carry more weight if it were not due to their criticisms clearly displaying that they do not watch the show in full.
The last of it.
*Sigh* The “critics don’t watch the show” argument is ridiculous. Perhaps his fans don’t really watch the show because they don’t see what professionals see – fearful body language, dogs shut down through fear and intimidation, shock, asphyxiation, and more.
Critics are all too familiar with the show. Many even used some of the same or similar approaches 20 years ago. There’s a reason professionals have moved away from those methods. They are flawed.
I have Rotts who went through his TV training and are better from it. They stare at the TV waiting for Cesar to come back.
So, true he is awesome and its works, you can see the passion in his eyes, when he helps change the dog and the owners lives, you cant fake that, he loves what he does and we are blesses that he wants to help those who need him. Thank you, would love to meet you someday with my german sheperd Dexi.
“you can’t fake that.” Please. It is a reality tv show. That’s like saying they don’t fake love on The Bachelor. Methods aside this is a horrible idea. Making people compete for an animal? What happens after they ‘win’ the “competition” and decide the animal is too much work. It also puts false expectations into the minds of the viewers.
It disgusts me when so-called animal lovers will put money ahead of animal welfare.
